Apparently Chelsea want to combat anti-Semitism at Stamford Bridge by sending supporters on educational trips to Auschwitz instead of handing out bans.

Good idea, PR stunt, or waste of time/money?

Discuss.

Well seeing as all the orrigional combat 18 were Chelsea head hunters I think a few of them would just use it as a free trip to nick some souvineer barbed wire and pose on top of mass graves with their swastika tattoos out

Part of me thinks it's a great idea. Education is surely the way to combat bigotry.

Part of me thinks some people just can't be educated.

I used to go to Stamford Bridge games a couple times a year. For the most part I didn't see or hear any anti semitism... apart from when Spurs were mentioned. More racism was evident than anything. But I think I lean more to your latter thought. Some folk can't or don't want to have their views changed

Are they sending them to Auschwitz and keeping them there, that's fine.

But like mentioned above, they will just pose with their tatts out.

Education is important, but some people just don't want to learn.

Bad idea.

In the late 90's they sent joyriders on safari holidays to make them see good from bad.

That didn't work. The little bastards still knicked cars.

Actually I think a lot of the old Nazi nutters are now using other people’s anti-Semite views to give them shit or accuse them of it to promote islamaphobia.

When the boss of the welsh defence league was happily barbecuing away showing off all his ‘blood and honour’ ink and theirs a EDL sheik division it really does come apparent some people just like an excuse, any excuse

One of the Chelsea “firm” was recorded in a football hooligan doc boasting about trying to get in one of the ovens at Auschwitz.

I doubt it would do any good whatsoever.

Good idea. Having been to Dachau, it's something everyone should be once and preferably when they are young. The attractiveness of extreme politics evaporates when you step through the gates.

He'd have a job, none of the ovens survived, did they?

No idea. It was the Donal Mcintyre documentary where he infiltrated them.

Right at the end of the guided tour they take you to a small building with ovens. From memory it was the prototype or initial smaller one prior to building the more ‘industrial ‘ size.

I’m a real softy at war graves and memorials etc but there I only felt a ghoulish horror not emotional. It was the scale of it that staggers.

As an aside, at Stansted border control on the way home, it was packed and a rather unpleasant woman was shouting out “families to the left, others to the right “. It sent a shudder through me.

Agreed. You cannot educate those with no desire to be educated.

On the flipside everyone I know who's visited Auschwitz has said it moved them, without a word being said.

Doubtless it depends on the compassion of the visitor..... If you have some, you'll "get" it. If you don't.......

Ok it won't be 100% successful but it'll also change more minds than stadium bans will... that makes it worth while in my book.

I'm inclined to agree.

Those I know who have been have all said you can't help but be moved by the place.

We live in hope eh?

All a stadium ban does is move the problem elsewhere and they're clearly not fussed about being in the ground anyway....

I think it would be a waste of time and money and that those Chelsea hooligans who are banned will just use the trip to try and get their season tickets back again and pretend they had been educated.

They should remain banned in my opinion.
