"God Save the Queen by The Sex Pistols"
We all like to think this did make number 1 but the charts were manipulated so that it showed that it never quite made it... |

"Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane
Which was kept off the top spot by "Release Me" by Engelbert Humperdinck. And you're right - it would have been my choice of No. 1 as well!" I have the Beatles number 1's album why is Penny Lane on it, can I sue under the false advertising act |

"God Save the Queen by The Sex Pistols
There were accusations this sold enough to be number one.
And was kept off the top spot by "The First Cut Is The Deepest" by Rod Stewart."
The charts were rigged.
Certain shops provided the sales figures for singles and those in the industry including the BBC (who did the charts) would go into the shops and either buy copies of First Cut or offer shop owners incentives to maybe doctor the figures.
It is known that that God Save was outselling First Cut by at least 2-1 in the week it was prevented from reaching No.1.
Many songs were bought chart success and many of the No.1's got there by unscroupulous methods. |

The general rule for what should have been a No.1 is that it made the No.2 slot and then went downwards.
I could say that "Saturday Gigs" by Mott the Hoople should of made No.1 as it is by far their best and last official single release but it did not even make the top 30.
I think the charts are more rigged these days though its not in the realms of illegality with the so called talentless talent shows which peak to hit a certain time of year such as Christmas.
Whilst most of the people on talent shows who make it past the selection panel can sing that does not mean they have talent. Theres a lot more to it than being able to just sing. |

"let it be there last single also made number 2 kept off the top by wandering star"
Now that would appear to be a tragedy however i doubt the record label thought that Wandering Star would outsell Let it Be even with chart manipulation.
Watching the film Paint your Wagon one can see how and in what context Wandering Star made No.1.
Imagine if it had been the B side that was the main song "I talk to the Trees" by Clint Eastwood, that is truly awful.
Lee Marvin is a true one hit wonder as he never released another record. |

"modern love and china girl - david bowie.both peaked at number 2"
From his commercial period of trying to appeal to the masses. (he succeded)
Are they better than Life on Mars which peaked at No.3 and is Bowie's most downloaded track or Heroes which amazingly only reached No.24?
This ...

I'm pretty sure the BPI or whoever did the charts has since admitted that it was number one but wasn't allowed for political reasons |

"God Save the Queen by The Sex Pistols"
This did actually outsell the supposed number 1 that week (jubilee week when Rod Stewart was the alleged best seller). So history shows it was, in reality, number 1, but the powers that be couldn't permit such a track to be sitting on the top spot while the country celebrated her Majesties jubilee celebrations could they. |

"Barbie Girl "
That was number 1 for three weeks according to Wikipedia.
There should be a separate thread for songs which should not have been number 1. This could be included there. It made "Star Trekkin'" sound wonderful. |

Kept off by bloody Joe Dolce. Bloody criminal.
Wish I could have “shutupa his face” "
Everyone remembers it famously being kept off no 1 by Joe Dolce but it was also kept off by John Lennon as well. |

I think they cheated when they compiled that album and included Beatles singles that hit No1 outside the U.K (hence why Yesterday and a couple of others sneaked onto this compilation) |

Wasn’t it number 2? Then later it was a case the sales figures had been massaged? |

"Please Please Me - The Beatles
Sorry, that was there first Number one single in the UK."
Not strictly true. And it depends what music paper you read at the time. On Record Retailer's chart (which most sources relied on), it only got to No. 2. It was only on Melody Maker's chart (independent from everything else) where it got to No. 1.
The Beatles' first official UK No. 1, therefore (according to Record Retailer) was "From Me To You". |
