It’s an awful thing to be told. I got redundancy from an awesome job with amazing perks and never really got anything close to that again.
If I had my time again I’d be more serious about the job hunt and not take the first thing I was offered. All I can offer is my wishes for the best of luck. Onwards and upwards x |

"Ah, shitty situation.
Thankfully you have a bit of time to plan and can interview for jobs and apply for jobs and not be overly desperate.
Good luck "
sorry to hear that OP, it must be a huge shock but as QL says, you have 6 months to hopefully sort yourself with an alternative.
Give the shock a day or so to settle, then sit down and plan your approach and think who you can speak to so that you can get the best advice to help you, good luck with it! |

Yes I can’t do much until I’ve had my redundancy money but no idea how much I will get
I work in a little family shop so who knows what will happen
Yes it is a bit of a shock and I’m just assuming it will be harder finding work at my age |

You're 51 for heavens sake !
You're a long way off the knackers yard yet
If it is any consolation, my last two hires were ladies in their early 50's
In terms of experience and work ethic, no one else came close
One has been with us since March and the other since July and are both working out great |

Best advice on that is look now even though you may have redundancy money coming you can be better off and more secure if you end up leaving for a better job and kicking redundancy money into touch. A family friend didn't do this missed out on a job but got 2k redundancy and ended up out of work for 4 months so lost out on over four times his redundancy in lost earnings. |

The big advantage that time gives you is the ability to improve what you can offer. If I was in your position, I think I would be looking for training oportunities to exploit.

I'll will mix this up a little.
Congratulation on being given the oportunity and ability move onto new pastures for the future.
It's scary. But you will never look back!
You have a new 20 year career waiting for you. Something you can really express yourself in and enjoy fully for the rest of your working life..
You have 6 months to think about which direction you would like to go in.. perhaps a new role in another company. Perhap a college to retrain in a suject you are passionate about. Perhaps a new business venture for yourself.
The little capital you receive is a chance to change your future..
Best wishes and good luck..

"Look at agency work ... its a good way of seeing whats out there.... and they also will give you advice on what to do next"
Temping work also often leads to a permanent contract.
You can start working on your CV now, there will be lots of tips on this online.
Sign up for some job sites online now and you’ll start seeing what is out there.

Sign up to somewhere like Indeed in January. Now is a crap time to look for a new job, particularly if you want to stick to retail. They are all temporary it seems.
The government's statutory redundancy is not much, unless you've been full time for 20 years.
Hope you find something |

My company has had frequent waves of redundancy the last 20 years or so. Some people have gone on to totally new careers and loved it. Some have realised they appreciated our place more than they thought and came back when there were vacancies.
Either way it turned out positively in the end. Hope your new start is empowering. |

Good luck with a new job x
I'm been made redundant in November so know hos you feel.
Statutory redundancy in a weeks wages for every year up to a maximum of a couple of hundred pounds (can't Remember exactly).
As has been said, if you are knly getting statutory then probably best to look for a new job in the New Year x
Best of luck xx |

as we get older fear of things creeps into daily life.
this is only natural and to be expected.
if you are fit and well then employment shouldnt be a problem. all depends on what you are prepared to do and accept for that role

This is from the gov.uk website which you might have already looked at.
Statutory redundancy pay rates
These are based on an employee’s age and length of employment and are counted back from the date of dismissal.
Employees get:
1.5 weeks’ pay for each year of employment after their 41st birthday
a week’s pay for each year of employment after their 22nd birthday
half a week’s pay for each year of employment up to their 22nd birthday
Length of service is capped at 20 years and weekly pay is capped at £508. The maximum amount of statutory redundancy pay is £15,240.
You can give your staff extra redundancy pay if you want to, or have a qualifying period of less than 2 years.
If I remember correctly from when I was made redundant a few years ago it was an average weekly say taken over the preceeding 8 weeks. That might have changed though. |

"Can anyone give me a job
I’m being made redundant in April
Never thought things would come to this but boss has had enough
Xxxxx" First of all, good luck.
Two vignettes. I was made redundant in my forties - it led to eighteen months of contract work which included mad nights out, random sex at after work parties and the like.
In my fifties I've been made redundant too - it led to the best job I've ever had, because, like you, I had plenty of notice to plan ahead. .
Work out how much you need to earn, work out what makes you smile about working, think about who you want to be... You have time to do this stuff...
And good luck.... |

I've been made Redundant 3 times in the past 14 years and it's not nice.
But at least you have 6 months to plan ahead so don't Panic.
Are you the only employee or are there others? You can approach your local Job Centre as they'll have specialists who can assist you in the run-up to the final days. If there are a few of you involved, Job Centres can set up a dedicated team specifically for you! They'll also liaise with your employer in some factors.
They can also help you with some Govt Depts who can help with Redundancy calculations.
Speak to your local Citizens Advice team as they'll have excellent support info and advice.
Also, best to inform the Mortgage Co and other Creditors in advance plus Utility providers as all can plan ahead with you.
You have to seek advice asap as some employers will move the goalposts the nearer the final days.
I'd one employer who did the dirty on all of his staff and paid no Redundancy; staff with 20+yrs service got nothing. I was diddled out of £3k redundancy which was lawfully owed.
Don't get caught out
Good luck! |

I just think he will try and rip me off but I’m not going to sit back and keep quiet
There are 3 of us being made redundant
Yes I have plenty of time as far as I know so all remains to be seen
Thank you again for all your lovely comments and advice

Having suffered redundancy before, it can be a very daunting and demoralising situation to be in.
However, be positive and sell yourself. You come across as a very vibrant and outgoing person, who is switched on to things.
Have you considered going self employed? I did it after my second redundancy, and have never looked back. |

I often wonder in these situations if the reason for announcing the redundancy so early is to enable you to get a new job before the time runs out... which would save them from having to pay the redundancy pay? |

I’m standing my ground and staying till the bitter end

Loads of great advice here already. I would say look around, see what’s available that interests you but at the same time think about signing with a recruitment agency. Not only are they best placed when it comes to knowing what work is available, a good agency will offer you help like working on your CV to making it suitable for todays employers needs. Hope everything works out for you. |

I’m now worrying that if he sells the business then the new owners might take us on but we might not like them then everything is lost and my employer has got away with paying redundancy
Something else to now look into
Bloody hell im sick of worrying |
