Maldon

Anyone remember when this used to be a huge event? Possibly the biggest spectator event of the year. Always late November and kind of signalled the start of winter.

Well, it was this weekend just gone! It’s fallen off the scene. What a pity.

Camberley

Spent many years chasing it through the Welsh mountains back when they used to run through the night. Always a big adventure, planning the most obscure route between stages. Who needs sat nav?

Maps, torch and a willingness to explore and get lost. Great fun.

most fundamental aspects

Yes the Lombard RAC Rally is how I remember it. The Network Q didn’t quite trip off the tongue.

I did marshalling in two of the Welsh stages in 1996

Loved the RAC rally. Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tommi Makinnen, Petter Solberg. Cracking battles going on right in my neck of the woods.

Tamworth

Remember it well. Use to come through Sutton Park near Birmingham. Many a time I was stood in the park at 5am to get a good spot, when the cars didn’t come through the stage till about midday

might be able to get more rally or racing on our roads soon.

Because parliament did vote nearly two years ago to allow closed road motorsport.

Except most of the councils are reluctant to host it because of cost they reckon.

Unless an championship organiser pays them to host it which I imagine they want a lot.

Was in the mountains during the reign of the Escorts . . Very pleased when the Sunbeam Lotus proved to be fantastic competition for the Escort, and then blown away when the Audi Quattro came on the scene . . . And then there were the Group B super cars
