Doesn't make much sense. Like a reminder to wake up. Always found it backwards in all honesty.

Better than waking up to set an alarm to go to sleep...

Just needs a nice gentle wake up tune.

I would have lost my job long ago. I’m up at 6am for work. And on weekends, I’m lucky if I wake before 9am.

Can’t tell if this is a troll or not - seems like a silly thing to troll about

Sounds like something from a life is a simulation theory. In which case nothing is gentle.

As I only actually go to work a few months a year I seldom use an alarm clock. Only when I need to interact with the other world.

But would miss flights and appointments without it.

To be honest, it’s a pretty reliable way to make sure you’re up in time for work and that? If setting an alarm to get my kids to school and to get me to work on time makes me backwards then so be it

When I was little we used to believe that banging your head on the pillow the same amount if times as the time you needed to get up told your brain when to naturally wake you.

So if you needed to be up at 6 you'd bang your head 6 times. You couldn't do any other time than on the hour though

Like I said I get people are going to be of the opinion that 'if I don't set an alarm I won't get up for work, lose money, miss appointments, dates, times...' and all that yada. But if it wasn't for an alarm clock how could you definitely say you would miss out.

But my main point is I can't see how it improves anything by linking your existence to some made up time frame.

Not to mention the health implications it probably has.

As I said above I seldom go to work, and only use the alarm clock when I need to synchronise with other people / events.

A made up timeframe is handy when mixing with others as long as they are using the same one.

Potentially, but not so much because you feel like doing things to your own schedule but because you are that person who is made to do that. There isn't a one size fits all way for anything and if there was I don't think life as we know it would exist. The universe is completely random and trying to tie some patterns of time or routines into it just makes no sense.

I get people are going to be perplexed at why I said this, but it's just an opinion on something I don't really see any reasonable answer to. Other than someone else's opinion.

This is why I enjoy my night shifts. Go to bed as everyone wakes up to their alarms.

Get up to no alarm when I'm ready.

Early turn I keep wakeing and thinking how much longer untill the alarm goes off.

Humans have always used time not by a clock but by seasons and weather. Day or night.

Time is in all forms not just a clock.

I see your point and certainly an alarm clock helps to make sure that everyone turns up and so on. I'm not really considering practical elements to why alarm clocks are pointless.

I probably am a rebellious thinker, but I don't think everything is an absolute given in the world where your bound to go down the same path as anyone or anything else. For instance to put in an example of when there must have been rebellious thinking (and to me the statement itself is rebellious now when you think about it) is that once the CEO of IBM said that there would be no use for computers in homes. So the very medium I am using to voice these opinions and conversing them was not yet contrived.

You're right and so is everyone in that time is key in the working world and I absolutely get the idea of alarms help this. But they don't seem like good ideas.

Life would be very different for me. For starters I'd be late for work every day and loose my job, then I wouldn't have money, which would have a severe impact on my life. So yes, life would be extremely different without an alarm clock.

Agree that's likely to be the case but you're a little too pragmatic in this statement.

I'm theorizing at the removal of alarm clocks from existence. Nobody has them or ever did. You think life would be different? I don't think it would.

So how would education work? Pupils and teachers turning up into schools at different times of the day.

I seriously don't think education is built on the basis that everyone uses an alarm clock.

I don't have every answer to all permutations as I'm just one human and no scientist.

Obviously education isn't built on that basis. But the point I'm getting across is some children wouldn't turn up at 6am, some teachers wouldn't turn up until 11am, see my point?

I see your point and certainly an alarm clock helps to make sure that everyone turns up and so on. I'm not really considering practical elements to why alarm clocks are pointless.

But life is practical, so you've just seen your own theory fail."

No no, your life is practical.

If I am on early shifts I need to be up at 4:15am. Do you expect me to just wake up, jump out of bed, go yippee it's time to go to work

I don't expect anything of you other than to be yourself

Yeah it doesn't quite work for shift workers huh

Crawling into bed at 7am having worked all night, I sure as hell wouldn't wake up mid afternoon without an alarm clock

We could all just exist according to our own sense of time and readiness to do things. But we are social creatures and, therefore, synchronise with our wider communities so that we can share experience. This can range from there being someone available to pick you up swiftly in by ambulance, because they confirmed to their shift patterns, to turning up to watch a gig and the band actually being there.

So clocks are necessary to achieve this and, by extension, alarm clocks, for those who can’t just awake on demand at the required time.

You show me someone's life who isn't. We all get up, move around, have to be certain places at certain times, we all have to do practical things such as cooking and eating, so yes, everyone's life is practical to some degree, even yours.

OP if you truly wish to reset to natural rhythms, it's not the alarm clock you need to target, much better would be artificial lighting.

If Miss XXX says she wants my cock in her mouth at 6:37 on Sunday, I want us both to have a clock and calendar set to the same system and time zone please

Large east-facing windows mean I wake with the sun, but I need an alarm for other occasions and there's no way around that.

when mines goes off straight up, best to get straight up and wake up fast than lie there, but usually awake before it goes off.

9 times out of 10, I wake up @10 minutes before the alarm is set to go off, which I have always found a little spooky..
