Hi folks,
In my youth as im.sure many of you did, i did all the maintenance on my car. Messing about with the old su carb, play8mg with goo fater goodies etc.
Nowadays with cars being all computer driven how much can you do on your car.
Im asking because ive a wheel bearimg gone on the van, £165 to replace at the garage, conisdering having a go myself, ford transit connect, anyone know how big a job it is ? |

I’m not meant to know about these things...
you’ll need a big socket. For your drive Shaft, that’s your first hurdle- most don’t have a big enough tool.
A big vice, to hold it, a big hammer to hit the flange off, suitable drifts to press the remains of the bearing out using said vice.
Make sure the new bearing tho has the abs sensor the right way round
Btw get the old one out first!!
Press in and reassemble.
Don’t do it in heels!

Definitely gave a look on you tube.
The lock mechanism broke on my car door lock.
The part was under a fiver from eBay.
It was a fiddly job lining up the spindles.
But bmw wanted over 200. |

And there is the problem, if you don't already have the tools, don't start the job. As above YouTube it, find out what's needed and see what you have. |

Most of the time by the time you pay for all of the tools and the parts you need that you will only ever use once and then cock it up it’s safer and easier to get the garage to do it |

Is it a front wheel bearing or a rear one ?
rear ones are easy to do,
If its a front one the price you quoted is a good price let them do it |

Male half does evening our cars (was a mechanic for years and has a huge tool collection)
Only things he doesn’t do is warranty work for obvious reasons.
He services the cars and the local garage who trust him stamp the book and do an invoice.
Saves a fortune, that said he has all the gear he needs. |

You would be surprised the money you can save by doing it yourself especially with the internet its a wealth of information. When i first started doing my own i had just a haynes manual to look at.

This...
Not good practice to do single bearings..
Not sure of Transits but ones I have done have required a press and pullers..
It may be cheaper to replace the hub sans bearings..

I fix everything with a lump hammer -I've even saved money by selling off all those other useless tools I had in my toolbox and the toolbox too -I now just carry it around in a holster and wreck merry havoc on every and any task that presents itself. |

My cars are classics, ford hot rod & afew others. I maintain them myself, my daily a bentley continental gtc... i dont even try i just suck up the bill, its a absolute joy to drive but i wouldnt go near it with a tool.. its all computers and at the age of 34... having never touched a computer... im not going to now! |

Various model hire cars picked up from airports require the manual to figure out how to open the fuel cap these days! |

Funny you should say that, two guys stopped when I had a puncture. Since I was wearing a very short mini dress and heels they had it changed in seconds. The place being a local dogging spot the least I could do was a bj as payment in kind.
Changing a wheel btw, in heels is still within my capacity.
OP- i assumed it was a front wheel bearing
