I often find it difficult to break the ice with someone. Other than 'hi how are you' or 'how was your day' just doesn't seem enough xx

If it's on here it's simple. Read a bit of their profile and converse about that.

Or talk about their status, or something they may have posted in forums.

If their profile Just says "fill in later", no status and they never post... Well probably worth about as much effort as they put into their profile...

All I look for in a message is indications that the sender has read my profile. There's plenty of information especially in my verifications that can be used as great icebreakers. If I get the sense that effort has been made, I reply. Even if I'm not interested, I'll still reply and let the sender know that I appreciate the time they took.

Unfortunately almost every message I get is a generic "Hi, how are you" they go straight in the bin. It's obvious when someone has made a bit of effort.
