American Film writing

I'm close to the point where I can't sit through an American film without flying into a fit of rage, defecating into my seat and flinging yesterday's dinner at the screen.
It seems that the country which has historically given us some of the best films of all time, is now incapable of making even watchable films.
In my opinion, what makes american films so unwatchable is that they are too heavily plot weighted and devoid of any realism. The problem with a heavy plot weighting is that;
1. They don't have any new ideas for plots
2. The characters who exist purely to move the plot, were already unrealistic and unrelatable
Eventually the film degenerates from a story, into something that closer resembles the ramblings of d*unk uncle Tony. No logic, no coherence, just a series of unlikely events.
Am I alone in this feeling?

Another good example. Horror films have become lazy and rely almost entirely on jump scares rather than concepts that are scary. They aren't scary at all, they just make you jump.
I think Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. |

If you’re close defecating in your seat and lobbing it at the telly, maybe ask the care assistants to change the channel. It’s probably been stuck on Dave for the last 3 months and you’re the only one that’s twigged amongst the droolers! Hollywood still churning out some pretty good stuff imho. Try Bollywood, might be more up your strasse. |

To be honest I think Hollywood has had a bit of a good spell lately. It has always churned out rubbish. But there have been some pretty good stuff in the mix too. Of course the big blockbusters are rubbish. But directors like Denis Villeneuve and Neill Blomkamp are genuinely interesting auteurs at the moment |

Honestly, that is the trend I'm on. I have started reading a lot more as i just can't get my satisfaction from American films. But i still love British films and some other foreign ones, mainly asian. |

To release it in the cinema. I saw "Crazy rich asians" last night and my goodness is that a bad film. I felt like drinking 6 red bulls to give myself the runs so I could projectile shit down the screen. |

Whilst there are some good films coming out, you do have to ask why are they so intent on constant remakes (ghostbusters, robocop, total recall to name a few)
None of the remakes we half as good as the originals so why even bother churning tat out which has been already done?
And i know this will inevitably annoy some, take a look at the new star wars movies... Episode 7 was a new hope repackaged, rebranded and sold on.... Episode 8 in 99% of it was empire strikes back....again rebranded and sold on. Which tells me that 90% of the next will be jedi, rebranded and sold on..

I can explain that one. Film studios revenues have been declining since the interweb took off and their obsession with CGI has increased costs too. So they are now less and less profitable and don't want to take "risks" on unproven formulas. Hence they churn our more and more remakes, sequels and prequels to "proven" franchises. That's their logic, not mine. |

I'm losing touch with reality because i can't imagine who Adam Sandler could ever be in a good movie. But i remember waterboy and anger management being funny. They were funny weren't they? Or was I just dumber then? Was it just a thing of the times? I don't know who I am anymore. |

I can't remember the last time i saw a Hollywood film advertised i wanted to see. i generally just watch old films and foreign films now.
My last two visits to the cinema were for Dads Army (spare ticket i was hassled in to taking- not a bad film really) and the first LOTR when i came out (fell asleep after the first hour as it was just dragging on, propped up by visual effects).
I rarely watch much TV now, everything has now been spread just a little too thin |

LOTR is good in places, visually great but doesn't justify its length at all. Plus the plot is very dated these days. Nobody wants to see fucking good guys dressed in white fighting bad guys dressed in black. They want to see vampires fighting sharks with frickin lasers. |

Denis Villeneuve is on a roll "Arrival" and "Blade runner"
Christopher Nolan still has his mojo "Interstellar" and "Dunkirk"
Innaritu is fantastic "The Revenant"
As is Neill Blomkamp "Chappie" (he would've been making Alien 3 if Ridley Scott hadn't ballsed it up)
And even Gareth Edwards (an actually good director) was given a chance to make a big franchise movie and showed what difference someone with quality makes in "Rogue One"
"Collosal" was a great twist on the monster movie. "Annihilation" was refreshingly different. There are quite a few out there. Best to wise up to directors you like and follow their work. I started watching Villeneuve since his debut "Incendies" (ouch!  ) and he's been great |

It's because they are taught the "3 act structure" which is a very formulaic way of telling stories that says you make the audience like someone, then put that person in trouble, then relieve them of that trouble (I.e. happy ending). The fundamental problem with it is that when everyone follows the same structure, it gets mighty fucking boring and act 2 doesn't work because you never really fear for the character. |

Ok well I've seen one of those and it was bloody good, blade runner. Note that it wasn't fincially successful and was basically a passion project. I might give some of those a go, but I'm not using the toilet first. |

I've never found star wars appealing but i saw a description of the plot of return of the Jedi and thought it sounded decent, if you like that kind of thing. By that I mean it actually have well thought out characters actually acting like themselves, not simply existing to further a plot. |

Yes, as a few posts above Christopher Nolan is still one of those directors that loves taking risks and thinking out of the box.
This afternoon i watched "Dunkirk" in 4K HDR. Apart from "Hacksaw Ridge", it's easily one of the best films i've watched for years. No CGI, all the filming done using real locations, real ships, real aircraft and young men, not men so old they could never possibly fight in a war. I really wished i had watched it on release, a great great film. |

but i think that is a problem with films making adaptations of books... and i don't think many films do that well at all....
i remember sitting thru the durge that was captain corelli's mandolin because i had read the book... thats 2 hrs i am never getting back and is about a close to my eyes bleeding as i thought was possible!
books are better adapted for tv than for movies because you have far better more time to do it justice... best example of that for 1st 5 series might be something along the lines of game of thrones...

Horror movies have become difficult to get 'right'. A lot of the things that scare people have already been done and have become the classic movies that people love. There are the remakes (Halloween etc) that try to reignite the horror magic but fail, rating system doesn't always help horror movies with some being rated a 12A! 12A for a horror!
Some even try and put in a naked or sex scene to push up the age rating.
Why is Hollywood churning out so much garbage? Blame the studio executives! It's becoming rarer for directors/writers to fully control their work without execs coming in and saying 'this film needs this...' otherwise we're walking. And now the film has a carchase that doesn't make sense.
Star Wars? I love it! I've loved the new ones. I think people are being too harsh on it because it's such a beloved part of their childhood though I do agree that The Force Awakens was a bit of remake of A New Hope.
Back on the subject of horror/thriller - 'A Quiet Place' was a brilliant film! And it's getting a sequel.

Ah Fabio, thank fuck you're here. Right, "Crazy rich asians" is not just a terrible adaption of a book, it's possibly the worst script I've ever seen. It's a toss up with "the room". It's billed as an all Asian cast but really it's an American script, with American dialogue, coming out the mouths of Asian people - which is just awkward. Its basically, let's merge 'meet the fockers' with '10 things I hate about you', add an Asian cast and throw in some dumplings and lanterns, then nobody will notice it's still american.
Why does Ken Jeong still get cast in every single crap american 'comedy'? It wasn't funny the first 100 times he did the one character he plays. Why Fabio, why? |

I guess it's harder to shock people the way the exorcist did. But 'the shining' is scary in the sense that the concept of watching a loved one descend into demon-induced madness in an isolated location, is quite 'horrifying'. Albeit the film doesn't exactly give you nightmares. I think the British "girl with all the gifts" was solid and their a Korean zombie film called "train to busan" which is excellent. |

While I do agree there is a lot of rubbish, and I've had enough of remakes, I don't mind a sequel, but not keen on remakes but I think there are still a lot of enjoyable films out there. As a film school grad I am familiar with story structure, language of film etc but when I watching a film i suspend my disbelief and just try to get lost in the story.
And I might be in the minority...but I quite enjoyed Solo. *Runs. |

To be honest i don't watch many new films and Mrs Broken picked that crock of shite last night. It had 7.5 on Imdb which is why I agreed but i guarantee you that is a fake rating inflated by bots and automated positive reviews. |

There are still so many good films that come out of the USA although with Harvey Weinstein no longer producing that’s likely to change. ( Tarantino and the coen bros are just two who got a step up the ladder). Look at Wes Anderson’s work for something different and then what about films like Manchester by the sea? There’s so much good stuff that gets drowned out by Hollywood franchises but it’s true that the best writing and screenplays are now coming from players like Netflix and amazon and sky too. Finally Korean films are so badass “oldboy” “sympathy for mr vengeance” “ the host”
“Train to busan” all excellent films. |

There’s so much good stuff that gets drowned out by Hollywood franchises but it’s true that the best writing and screenplays are now coming from players like Netflix and amazon and sky too. Finally Korean films are so badass “oldboy” “sympathy for mr vengeance” “ the host”

The kind of facts that make me want to go on a murder rampage, removing peoples eyeballs with spoons are that the brilliant "the girl with all the gifts" does $2.3m at the box office and makes a loss whilst fucking Adam fucking Sandlers abortion of a film "jack and jill" does $149.7m and makes a profit. I literally want to hang, draw and quarter everyone who gave Adam Sandler their money for that. |
