West Mids police have started Operation Top Deck - an initiative encouraging joe public to film motorists using their mobile phone at the wheel of their vehicle. Police ensure that if reg numbers are captured and you agree to appear in court with your uploaded footage they will prosecute said drivers

It’s a bit underhand but people are killed by drivers being distracted by their phones. The amount of heads you see looking down at their phones whilst driving is ridiculous. |

Dash cams in cars cant really see drivers in cars in front using mobiles whereas people on the pavement can... i think even if someone sees people doing that it may be a deterrent in itself |

What a great idea, then the odd police officers who aren't sat behind their desks can spend even more time persecuting motorists and stuffing their faces in McDonald's. Wouldn't want any real crime solved, that would requite effort and real policework, not when there are easy target motorists to chase who contrary to normal British law are guilty until they can prove themselves innocent
Used to have such respect for the police, including several commendations for helping.as the saying goes, wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire now. Respect zero. I'm sure it's a thankless job now but at least pretend you give a toss. |

I'm pretty sure the current lack of effective policing is more to do with tory austerity cutting 20000 ish police since 2010, can't afford police, or for that matter firemen (-10000) or prison officers(-7500) if they're going to bail the banks out to the tune of £700 to £850 billion (depending on who you believe) What would you do? |

I was filmed the other day by a guy on a motorbike. I was at traffic lights, took a wrong turning, was lost. It was a red zone so no pulling at the side of the road so I was on my phone putting on the sat nav. He videod me and put a sarcastic thumbs up but I figured what I did was the safest option still as although my engine was on I was stopped at 4 way lights. If I do get points and fine I would be pissed off. |

Yeah because the thousands of 999 calls a day answer themselves. And the police are always first at any emergency regardless of what it is, that’s because they’re already out and about rather than in bed waiting for the alarm to go off for a call out. |

Unfortunately laws are either broken or not. There are no grey areas. The best you could hope for is the minimum fine by way of mitigating circumstances. You should have continued driving until there was a safe and legal place to stop. It's more than likely going to end up on youtube than a police officers desk... He is unlikely to have got your reg number if he was beside you, and how many people are actually willing to show up in court and be a witness... What you did isn't anymore dangerous than changing the radio or smoking in the car in all reality. It's when people are engrossed in conversation where the most dangerous situations arise. You could ask siri to do it for you on an iphone, it's a lot less involved than typing in addresses... |

If he was using a mobile to film you then he’s committing the same offence so I’d forget about it if I was you. |

Sadly it's professional driver who are the biggest culprits, hgv, transit van and taxi drivers. I pass a school bus every morning coming the other way, driver on his phone EVERY day!! Unfortunately I've nobody in the car with me to take the picture but I have reported him on numerous occasions to the bus company.
A drive along the M4 you will pass countless truck drivers on their phones... Sat in traffic the other day I noticed one had an iPad strapped to his steering wheel!!! Wtaf?! |

Of course this means in the
first instance extra police officers off the beat reviewing video footage.
Then the government will point to the increased prosecutions with less police on the street, and cut the budget.

A lot of motorcyclists are using gopro and dashcams attached to themselves, don't think I've ever seen a motorcyclist using a mobile, but undoubtedly it will have happened somewhere... |

Let them do their own job, next it will be us catching murderers or searching for missing persons for them.
That said sick to death of seeing people in flash cars that must have hands free blatantly holding their phones to their ear whilst driving.
And the other is those that remove their front number plate on the pretence that it’s fallen off.
Can’t find the number plate stickers on EBay for £4.00 then Eh? |

It was a dashcam on the side of his helmet  . I didn't realise what he was doing at first. Silly mistake of mine but I knew I was in a safe location as I knew I would be at the lights fir a while |

Every fucker who I see using their phone whilst driving, I want to drag out of their car and beat them to death with their phone.
However, I saw something this afternoon that trumps everything I've seen before. Driving behind a mini mpv type thing, can't recall what it was. A hand comes out of the drivers window, and starts shaking something, not up and down shaking, but kinda like a rotating wrist motion? I paid closer attention, and it was a fucking babies bottle. I pulled up along side the car at the next set of lights, and low and behold, there's a baby seat in the front passengers seat and the driver is now giving the baby its bottle. Sweet fucking Jesus. |

I have a camera on top of my crash helmet and will film people using phones. It is dangerous enough on the roads as it is without drivers not paying attention to what they are doing. I am all for this, brilliant idea. |
