In terms of franchise rogue one means star wars has at least two great films in its legacy (the other definite being empire). Blade runner has two masterpieces. So that probably pips the lot. Alien has 2 great films too. In a slightly more cheesy way so does terminator. I don't think any of the star trek, marvel, dc, x men films have been great. Although I did enjoy both the ant man films and you can't really deny batman begins was awesome. Monsters 2 was better than 1 imo.
For me, the best sci-fi films have been one offs. Interstellar. Oblivion. Edge of Tomorrow. Starship Troopers. Total Recall |

Oh great!
I love Neill Blomkamps stuff too district 9 and chappie are great. I'm bummed Ridley Scott is such an arse and bumped him off making alien 3. It would've been brilliant. |

All the usual films I've watched and loved, my current favourite has to be The Expanse on Netflix though, I'm chomping at the bit for season 3 to be released in October |

Battlestar Galactica was amazing. I love star trek, probably a bit more than star wars but I also like that too. TV seems to be the natural fit for sci-fi over film. So many good series, like those mentioned and the expanse. |

If you like Blomkamps work I'd recommend watching some of the shorts on his "Oats Studios" channel on YouTube if you haven't already, a lot of them are just concepts or pilots for future projects, but most of them are better than full feature length films! Sigourney Weaver has a lead role in one of them too

For films, the two that were both excellent films and pushed the boundary of cinema and visual effects were 2001 and forbidden planet- without these Star Wars probably wouldn't have happened (with an honouable mention for Fantastic Voyage).
As a few have strayed in to TV world with suggestions- Red Dwarf and Babylon 5 |

"And on a similar Gerry Anderson theme.....Space 1999

Downhill after they cut the budget.
Hmmm....yeah....they even made one episode about Luton!!!!....lol "
Well it is like another world there |

I know this is probably a hoax, but I really do hope not. I like that movie, and I don't want to dislike it because of a crappy sequel in an attempt to make money.
Speaking of which, did anybody actually really enjoy "The Last Jedi?" |

what did you think about the ending?
I loved the series but was a little
bit disappointed they never managed
to find a modern day earth!
The V remake was really good also
but they sadly stopped it after 2 series

I hated the new V. Loved the old one. Well, the mini series and final battle. |

"Yeah, I'm a sci-fi movie geek.
For me it's Star Wars. Always will be."
I have to agree with you on that one, although I would truly love to forget Jar Jar entirely. |

Not into the whole franchise thing so mine are individual offerings!! Showing my age but the black and white films look dated now too but.....
The Day The Earth Stood Still
The Quatermass Experiment
William Hartnell as Dr Who
Then later, as colour came in,
War of the Worlds
Soylent Green
2001
Marooned
Silent Running
Dune
Alien
Star Wars Episode 4 (The original)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Blade Runner
Then moving into the start of real CGI;
Starship troopers
Independence Day
I Robot
Low key but great storyline;
Children of Men
Galaxy Quest for sheer lunacy!!!

There's an edit of phantom menace out there which cuts jar jar out of it almost entirely. And believe it or not it actually works. It's quite bizarre to discover there's a half decent film under there |

Don't get too excited Unfortunately you can't get rid of him entirely because he personally cedes powers to the emperor (why lucas why!! ). But he is relegated to a stupid creature who flails around in the background every now and then. Plus, they had the genius of dubbing over his voice with garbled grunts and then putting subtitles underneath. Which made it much more in keeping with the star wars universe whilst simultaneously enabling them to write better dialog for him
Me-sa like-sa it much-sa more-sa |

As long as you don't have to listen to that ridiculous voice, I think I will be able to bare it. |

Not ready for snuggly seductive bed talk in a jar jar voice then? Or should we take this discussion over to the wrestling thread? |

"Logan's Run "
Now there's a movie that NEEDS to be remade. A society of 20 something bimbos enjoying mindless leisure pursuits without any knowledge of books and learning until they reach 30 when they're bumped off. Very topical still imo
There was a movie recently called The Giver which touched a similar nerve |

A remake for this has been hanging around Hollywood for some time. Bryan singer (X-Men) was attached to direct it before, just hasn't gotten of the ground yet. |
