I love this time of the year when one can get bite size party food in the shops.
However, it is a bit of a hit and miss as some are truly dire.
So help please, nice FAB people, and advise on what is worth buying and what is not.
I would recommend the frozen ones from Lidl's and Aldi's. |

Steer clear of all that shite in iceland. Seriously.
There are one or two good ones there is you are very selective.
Go for ones that have more natural ingredients i.e more protien than pastry or breadcrumb.
Steer clear of shop bought scampi it's shite. Tons of crumb and no scampi.
Steer clear of anything in sauce. It's always all sauce.
Buy frozen pastry or vol au vants..... fill em yourself.
Make pastry yourself . use jam tart dishes ( diddy ones like patty tins ) fill em yourself.
Go to lidl or aldi ....
Buy pizza n slice it into small slices. Better still cut barm cakes in half n make mini pizzas..... so much tastier. Dead easy to do.
Do sausages. NOT sausage rolls...
Do a rice dish. Pasta dish.
Don't buy the shite.
people don't really like it they just eat it cos it's all there is....
Do finger sarnies. Sommat on toast. Spud salads....

I have a New Year bash with "American Supper" at the dance school that I attend, as in a bring a dish party.
I have dry dibbles like cheese straws and crisps etc. already, and am contemplating making a salad or get some frozen party foods from Lidl's or Aldi's.
Ready made pigs in blankets that needs heating up in the oven are brilliant, and I may get some of those for myself.

"get a few packs of filo or frozen puff pastry. Same base with a variety of pastry cutters can be used for cheese straws, vol-au-vents, ...... lots of different Amuse-gueules "
.
I have to tidy the kitchen in order to find sufficient space on the worktop to do any pastry work, and frankly I can't be arsed! |

One of the reasons I am camping in a tent over Christmas is that the tent will be tidier than the house! |

easy, pop down to local pizza shop on route with a small round pastry cutter in your pocket, put pizza box on bonnet of car (pref someone else's) and cut pizza into bite size round mini pizza's
for show put theas into plastic tupperwear type box and lose the box (looks better if they think you could be arsed to clear a space in your kitchen)
job done |

I seldom buy pizzas from the local shop, as I believe they are too expensive for what they are worth. |

Not that hard to please, honest!
If I have a KFC near me, I would have gone and get a fiver's worth of Hot Wings, and I would probably eat them all myself as they are lush to me! |

Well yeah .... I cook but im not a slave to it Yummy ....
I take into account time and sleep and other things to do etc....
Bags of time means make it.
Tons of money means buy it but only if the bought version is the same as my own or better. |

Buy a fresh pineapple (it has to be fresh for the alcohol to soak/marinade into the pineapple) and a cheap bottle of malibu type drink from aldi or similar shopping place.
Cut the rind off the pineapple and cut into chunks, place them in a tupperware container and add 1/3-1/2 of the bottle of malibu depending on size of container, then put lid on container and leave in fridge for 3-4 days.
Each day give the container a quick shake and put back in fridge.
When its party day let those who are drinking try some as an appetiser (not advisable if someone is driving) be careful as it is quite easy to get trollied on just a few chunks if you are drinking too. |

If you have a costco card or know someone who does, they do a great range of party food all year round |

I’m an old school party host,,,,,,, I prefer to make or prepare my own party food……. I feel its all apart of making the event personal rather than yet another gathering where everything served, looks and tastes like it came ready made in a box…….
FFS…......if the thought of doing a bit of prep is to much hassle,,,, ya may as well just buy in a few dozen pot assorted noodle’s and ask guests to bring their own forks……(hey, it'll save on the clearing-up too)

"do people not ever make their own party food here?"
I've done parties where I've cooked everything including specialist breads, to be honest once people get a couple of drinks inside them they could be chewing anything, and all that time spent in the kitchen has been a waste of effort. |

Jus roll, ready made pastry or stores own brand, stores own brand tomato puree and mozzarella cheese, bang it oven after making a pizza with it, it takes 10mins tops to make.
cocktail sausages always go down well with party goers.
Cheap bacon wrapped around cocktail sausages.
cheap butter, dried garlic and herb sprinkled in and mix well. Get cheap bread, butter it with garlic butter you just made and use pastry cutter for a nice effect and bang in oven or under grill then sprinkle with cheese.
Tin of stores own chopped tomato, add garlic, black pepper, lemon juice, salt and chillies then blitz it in a blender and put it in a dish as a dip.
stores own brand cake mix and add what you fancy to it, bang em in cake cases and bake.
You can do all that for about 20 quid. |

Stores own brand ready made pastry, jam or mince filling.
Lay the pastry flat put plenty of filling in and roll up into a swiss roll type tube and cut into inch or so slices. Bang it in the oven and serve hot or cold on its own or with cream or custard.
No need to thank me for educating you all in cheap culinary cuisine, I know you'll all make the recipes I've put forward and say they are of your own thought and expertise |

If I have a themed party night like a Bollywood party, or recently a Caribbean night....I cook the full monty.
However if it's a finger buffet I just save my time and go to M&S....finger food is too fiddly and time consuming. |

If I were to host a party, I would have to tidy the house, which means I would have access to all of my kitchen, and yes, I too would make my own party food. |
