Yes, first time. We have loads of plants in our garden and there's only so many times you can have strawberries and ice cream etc! I think I got the recipe out of a Good Housekeeping book I've got

I made some fig jam and thats turned out well, I tried to make some sloe jam but it has,nt set tried another away by boiling it longer but still did,nt work, my sister suggested useing some jam sugar which presumably never fails, I used to use brown demara sugar to take the tarte taste out of blackberrys when boiling them but that was,nt for jam.

Jam sugar does make things easy otherwise go forever boiling, sugar thermometer.

If you’re using fruits that are low in natural pectins you could try adding a little natural acid like a little lemon that helps.

I boil up the jars I’m using.

As a youngster I remember my grandma and as time goes on I often think of her in her kitchen thou I don,t think she was into makeing jams etc like your grandma was but she liked makeing fresh apple pie from the bramley in the back garden and also fresh toffee, it was the cooking utensils she used that amused me some you would call antiques now days, also used the old washing mangle this was around 1967/1968 she was born in 1890 as was my grandad and he grew most of his vegetables in the back garden..

My sister was giveing me the run down on steraliseing the jars which was the best way so I,ve options there but I,ve been putting boiling water into them and over them so far, I had a green tomato chutney that lasted 18 months after doing the jars that way.. yes I,ve so far been useing lemon juice, and the zest I used around 5lb of figs and got about three jam jars from it haha but its still fun, I,ve been useing a candy thermometer but the pans not been deep/big enough to use it probabily, but hear a jam kettle is the answer.

Oh blimey I just have huge stock pots that I use.

As for keeping stuff that long, it was lucky to last a couple of weeks here. Homemade bread and scones and it always goes really quick. Failing that, crumpets and muffins is the breakfast of choice when there’s homemade jam.

Dishwasher or wash with bicarbonate.

I always use jam sugar, a jam thermometer and a little butter helps it set

Where we used to live we had a beautiful victoria plum tree that used to be laden with plums the new owners cut that tree down within 10/15 years of liveing there it would have been over 50 years old nearer 60 years old those trees are rare round here now days, Its pleaseing to see so many people here like makeing and preserveing condiments such as mentioned.

I made courgette and pineapple jam this year to use up some of the mountains of courgettes from our allotment. It sounds weird but it’s actually really lovely.

Last year I made an apple butter preserve in the slow cooker which worked out amazing. We’ve got so many apples again this year’s that I might have to make it again

Thats Interesting I always thought blackberry jam had its own seeds still in the jam, one thing I did notice with blackberrys is is that after boiling them I would often find small fly larvae in the fruit afterwards same larvae (species) every time which I saw I got out have you ever witnessed the larvae before?

I,ve been told because of the hot weather this summer fig trees have produced well thou mine never seems to fail but this year its yealded well and of course you can only eat so many straight off the tree a day, they won,t harvest well if left to long to pick luckily the local blackbirds and wasps have missed out again this year, the great thing with the Internet you can find the recipe in no time well I have so far.

There was just way too many seeds. It really could have done without few!

No never noticed any larvae! But they were washed several times and then a few more times for good measure.

Yes you can wash the blackberrys which I did to finding some larvae at the time but also after boiling them obviously they can burrow inside the blackberrys,it might just be a regional thing where the adult flys operate but I,m unclear on that one they never seemed to affect the flavour of the fruit thou I must admit I would,nt fancy putting one straight in my mouth off the bush with a live larvae in it.. at least after boiling them they seemed to appear at the top of the liquid..

I reboiled some sloe jam because it was,nt setting and it still did,nt The pan I used was big but not deep enough for a candy thermometer so was useless in that respect in the same pan I made I made fig jam successfully without the help of the thermometer, by useing the saucer method in the fridge then out and back in again to see it was firm worked a treat, you could,nt use the same method with sloe jam as its just liquid and in the time of reboiling it again I evaporated a full jar away in a very short time .. jam sugar me thinks next time as its to long to make for it to fail if the jams reasonably firm in the pan after cooking the saucer method might prevail over the jam sugar one.
