Gay Pride makes me feel depressed :(

It's like it's saying 'okay you can be gay for a few hours but after that you can get back in your cave and let the straights take over for the rest of the year'. A Boy George tribute act was singing 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?' And that made me feel more sad

Thats not true. I see Pride as a celebration. Mothers day is just one day in the year. Doesnt mean you dont love and apprieciate your mom the rest of the year. Same with valentines day or birthdays. Celebrate being who you are everyday!!!

So, do you think there should be as many gay pride parades as there are heterosexual pride parades - would that help with your depression?

I’m sorry to hear that the experience has left you feeling like that. Pride is every week in the summer months - certainly not confined to a day. That’s discounting all the pre Pride fundraisers throughout the year. Maybe you need to experience a good old Blackpool Pride. 3 days of cheesy classics, overpriced booze, banging dance anthems and the best people you could ever wish to meet. I took my child along this year and it filled me with pride watching them proudly cover themselves in rainbows and get a little closer to understanding what they feel. As a result they now go to a group twice a week where they are free to be the person they feel they are without prejudice. We wouldn’t have had that opportunity otherwise.

This doesn't make sense. You can be GAY and proud about it every day of the year.

What is it exactly that you think 'the straights' take over ?

Most tribute acts are enough to make anyone feel sad.

I think the point OP is making is that outside of Pride gay people don't get to be so visible and open about their love lives. How often do you see gay couples even holding hands in public, compared to straight couples?

Well whats the alternitive a parade everyweek? Or none at all?

I think like with most forms of prejudice in our sociciaty we are getting better with accepting the LGBT community and it 9s becoming more visable, with improvements still to be made.

I don't think that using terms like "the straights" help arguments like this we should be trying to bring people together not divide them by sexual orinatation

I get this

After all .... there’s no heterosexual pride day

You shouldn’t have to ‘celebrate ‘ something that should be freely accepted

I have. We are in a fairly rural town and I know many openly gay couples. Be comfortable in your own skin

I have in my area, and showing affection, but not very often. Then again, I don't see many men and women holding hands or kissing.

What a crazy way to look at it the op has .

He doesn’t like the fact that gay pride gives the queers , gays , TVs etc.... the opportunity to show public affection and celebrate their sexuality at the event , but afterwards retreat back into hiding ?

I don’t know any who do this ( excepting married TVs and the shy type ) .

Religious festivals are held every year , but followers of that religion are just as happy for the rest of the year . Just as the LGQBT are too . Why can’t the op be ?

Oh and before people say they can’t be themselves in public , of course they can . There are no laws preventing them from public displays of affection any more than there are for the straight amongst us .

Brighton is apparently the gay capital of Europe. Brighton Pride is the biggest too.

I find it too much, it takes over a big part of the city, and is way too much in your face. That said I know it makes a lot of money for local businesses. All swings and roundabouts, excuse the pun.

Well there are a lot more straight couples than gay couples. I see plenty of butt buddies holding hands in London, but i take your point that you see less in Cornwall. But again, more people in London than Cornwall. Hard to miss the rainbow flags around so it's not like being gay is taboo anymore. You don't tend to notice the lesbian couples because there's always one that looks like a dude and therefore you think it's just a straight couple anyway.

Really? How I wish that were true.

While there may be no laws against it there is still prejudice. I've never once had abuse hurled at me for holding hands or kissing my husband. I have with my girlfriend though....

Do you really think homophobia has been totally eradicated? There may be no laws against being gay but plenty of people still have the attitude that it's something wrong or shameful.

Legalising (or criminalising) something rarely completely solves a problem.

Wow , that surprises me .

We often see same sex couples openly holding hands and behaving in just the same way together as straight couples , and no one bats an eyelid here .

Perhaps it’s more to do with a regional thing ?

Or where and what may be occurring ?

Some people don’t like any kind of public displays of affection , no matter what sex may be doing the kissing etc......

If you and your girlfriend are frequenting the same places at the same times , and doing the same things together , then that sucks big time if you get abuse for it .

Well I guess we have to look at what the problem is first . Are we to presume that everyone is ever going to be happy about gay people showing their love for each other in front of the general public ? If so , then no , I don’t think we have eradicated homophobia , and nor will we in our lifetime . Because there will always be some who feel it’s against their religious beliefs , or they feel it isn’t natural . There’s nothing much we can do about this , it will take time , but eventually it’ll become the norm .

Have the feelings from Pride in your heart all of the time, you deserve that. Society grew to put down and devalue LGBT people, which Pride and equality movements helped to correct. Society is still loaded against many people, with some intolerance and hate lingering. If you are more isolated , it may take some effort to increase your self confidence and acceptance, so it's second nature always.

Work at those things that can establish new positive habits for you.
