Interesting debate as a professor said we are all born the same and some of us learn racism as we are growing up..
So do you agree and how can someone learn racism? |

"You can learn racism from an influential figure in your life if they themselves are racist.
American History X portrayed it perfectly "
Could end it there
Obviously its learnt its not a human instinct lol |

I'm seriously concerned about the recent escalation of racism that seems to be happening all over. Not helped by the likes of Trump and far right politicians in general seemingly making it OK to spout racist nonsense. |

Agree. I despair that he's president.
Clips of Barack Obama keep popping up online. Wish they could vote him back in. |

In terms of economy and unemployment, Trump is doing a better job than Obama.
I could be wrong, but was America's largest deficit during Obama's years? |

Racism is entrenched in western society for hundreds of years. It manifests its self in many forms, the media, stereotypes portrayed in films, newspapers and social media. Once you understand your white privilege and our history on slavery and how our society. was built on suppressing our fellow man, you will never fully appreciate the layers of institutionalised racism there still is. |

Obama was elected after the 2008 financial crash. Any deficit was his inheritance from Bush. Trump’s inheritance from Obama is the turnaround. National economies don’t move that quick. By the time of the next election, Trump will justifiably reap what he has sown - whatever that may be - should he still be in the running, of course. |

Racism is endemic in human history.
One tribe has always thought itself superior to another and sought to enslave or invalidate the other, based on differences in racial characteristics.
Usually the one that has developed the better weaponry.
It is an ugly characteristic. |

Just because Trump is doing a great job of building the us economy, does not give him the right to instigate racial hatred and negative stereotypes.
Hitler did a great job of building the German economy and look how that turned out'! |

I'll be honest when I was in my 20's shopping a little boy came up to me being cheeky (in a cute way) & I called him a cheeky monkey. My partner said you can't call him that & I was like why? He replied, 'He"s black' to which I still didn't think I was being offensive. However my partner's father was racist to fuck & that's how he knew the term. Hence I've never referred that term since. |

I use monkey a lot, not in a racist term but to describe someone who copies and never thinks. So annoying accountants i call "number-monkeys", bricklayers who don't think about what they are doing I call "brick-monkeys" and so on. It's a great word that perfectly describes the intent and sounds lovely. I'm not changing my language for a few snowflakes. |

Actually living in a city that’s being made a bit of a poster boy for fascist ideals I don’t really find it funny.
We are inundated by hordes on a regular basis and have demos under the pretence of anti ra*e and women’s rights marching through the city centre who terrify the locals because quite frankly they look like the kind of kind of people who would commit those crimes and yes that is generalising.
But it is all a front for different groups. After the demos and counter demos and when the police leave, they then wander the streets with their placards stopping people and canvassing their views.
So yes I do feel very strongly at one, hiding their racism and two hiding behind something I also feel strongly about. They’re scum!
I could go on but quite frankly I would and getting angry about here is not the right thing.
My point is made, I’m going to have coffee and breathe again. |

Yes, it is learned.
I remember the first time my daughter saw a black person and commented on it as a toddler. She didn't notice Asian skin as a lot of our community are Asian but I clocked her staring.
He reaction was slightly fearful and questioning as she hadn't seen a black person before, and I reassured her that it was ok, they were just the same as us with darker skin.
Problem solved- and it's never been questioned since.

But that's you assigning a motivation to people that they didn't explicitly espouse. I do that too so it's not a criticism. But you have to admit that in previous generations it was easy enough to find groups who explicitly espouse racist ideas. So don't deny the progress is all im saying. Interracial marriage was illegal in parts of America until 1967 so I hardly think Trump is the pinnacle of racism in their history. |

I don't think it's minimising racism or saying that we shouldn't fight racism wherever we find it to say that, objectively, racism is probably less prevalent now in the UK than it has ever been.
I grew up in the seventies. Explicit and virulent racism was all around. You had monkey chants from football terraces whenever a black player appeared and no one said anything. You had programmes on mainstream TV like mind your language and love thy neighbour premised on the basis that people who weren't white were inherently amusing. Comedians could appear on TV and casually refer to "Pakis" and "Sambos".
These days if anyone says anything explicitly racist, it's career ending and virtually everyone thinks racism is socially unacceptable.
There are obviously still pockets of racism around and people like Trump and Farage are perfectly happy to dog whistle them, but historically the racists are losing and they know it. |

If you read Frans Cannon - he writes somewhere that we are all inherently racist, we all have a fear of otherness, the trick is in not acting on your fears so that you can accept and appreciate the similarities |

You obviously didn’t understand then. I make a long post about how week in week out my city is being taken over by groups such as Britain First, the North East Infidels, The DFLA, The EDL and how they’re trying to recruit new members by the pretence of marching on women’s rights and protecting women.
Your first comment after is to tell me I’m assigning motivation to them “that they didn’t explicitly espouse” and then go on to tell me you know plenty about it when I explicitly tell you that I am not assigning motivation to their demo at all and you shouldn’t be making excuses for it.

"If you read Frans Cannon - he writes somewhere that we are all inherently racist, we all have a fear of otherness, the trick is in not acting on your fears so that you can accept and appreciate the similarities
I agree that none of us are entirely non-racist. Even though a lot of people have a problem admitting that these days.
See Avenue Q.
People grow up believing they are special and immune to the ills of society? "

"Our society’s awash with racism and unfortunately they use poorly veiled scaremongering techniques to try to gather unknowing supporters too.
Try being membership secretary for the KKK then, we can't give these robes away. It's like nobody enjoys a good ol' cross burning these days
No, I’m NOT assigning motivation to their demo. Please don’t try to make excuses for something you know nothing about
I know plenty about it. Please don't assume you know more than strangers on the internet.
I think that’s what you have done.
Are you living it?
You're asking a guy in a mixed race marriage, with mixed race kids, who lives in a country that is "awash with racism" if he experiences racism?
You’re commenting on my message about racism demos that are veiled as something else. Telling me I am making assumptions and that you know I am wrong
I am not asking if you experience racism?
You either didn't read what i said or didn't understand it.
Really, Reading is an awful long way from Sunderland if you have come to counterdemo "
Anyway my argument is not with you |

"I'm seriously concerned about the recent escalation of racism that seems to be happening all over. Not helped by the likes of Trump and far right politicians in general seemingly making it OK to spout racist nonsense. "
I haven't read every post here but I had to respond to this typical attitude that racism is a 'right wing' attribute. It isn't. Racism is apolitical, it is cultural ignorance or something created by circumstances affecting the individual. Racism is certainly 'learned'.
To suggest it is 'right wing' political ignores the drivers of racism and when we have Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition failing to rid itself of the antisemitic label it shows the left has its own versions of racism embedded in its culture.
Generally the 'racist' card is played to divert an argument or criticism as Williams did the other day and as Diane Abbot and David Lammy do at the slightest criticism. Its become a political tool but racism is of itself not in any way political. |

What even counts as racism nowadays? Obviously saying anything hurtful or acts of violence towards others based on race isnt cool, but so much minor things get blown out of proportion that its just ridiculous, for example a group of workers together joking around on their break, in walks Roberto and everybody refers to him as grease ball, he's not offended and everybodys laughing having a good time, the French guy from accountants walks in and jokes about eating baguettes, in walks the old black woman and everybody goes silent for fear of being racist, doesnt feel good for everybody in the room who were having fun and I bet it doesnt feel nice for the black woman who can now feel the awkwardness in the room and sudden silence as she walked in. I think we should be able to joke around with race based humour but I bet others would disagree??? Is it racist to say that the Asians are a intelligent race or am I going to get reported for racism?

You were saying he was cheeky like a monkey. Or, as all little kids are, he was like a little monkey. You weren't saying he literally looked like a little brown monkey due to the color of his skin or that he was genetically more like a monkey than a white kid. As long as you'd say it to any kid of any ethnicity, you weren't being racist. |

"I don't think it's minimising racism or saying that we shouldn't fight racism wherever we find it to say that, objectively, racism is probably less prevalent now in the UK than it has ever been. "
This is very true and the fact people recognise racism when it rears its ugly head proves your point. Years ago it wasn't. Still more to do though
" I grew up in the seventies. Explicit and virulent racism was all around. You had monkey chants from football terraces whenever a black player appeared and no one said anything. You had programmes on mainstream TV like mind your language and love thy neighbour premised on the basis that people who weren't white were inherently amusing. Comedians could appear on TV and casually refer to "Pakis" and "Sambos"."
I would gently point out that the programmes you mention (and I would add 'Till Death Us Do Part') were actually taking the p*ss out of the racist and bogotted characters not anyone else. Comedy is a great way to make a point. I was a teenager / 20s in the '70s and our corner shop was a 'Paki Shop' and the owner never took offence. He was Pakistani. Now people are taught to take offence which does not excuse cruel racism but referring to a shop owner's nationality is NOT racist. Apparently now I can't criticise the state of Israel's Zionist leaders as that is now 'antisemitism'. But they can criticise the UK's Government. Its all swung a bit to far the other way. IMHO.
" These days if anyone says anything explicitly racist, it's career ending and virtually everyone thinks racism is socially unacceptable. "
Which sort of proves the point I just made. A woman accuses a man of sexual assault and he is guilty before trial. Someone shouts 'Racist!' at a politician and he is finished.
" There are obviously still pockets of racism around and people like Trump and Farage are perfectly happy to dog whistle them, but historically the racists are losing and they know it. "
I will avoid commenting on Trump but I will take issue with you over Farage. He has never ever made ONE racist statement in his life. If you can find one please copy a link. UKIP itself was against racism and booted out people who acted like racists. OK it is now a busted flush (unless we are forced by the Remain biased MPs to vote again) and while I was never a member I worked very closely with many lovely and fair minded UKIP people in 2016. Not a racist word was uttered ever or I would have distanced myself. |

Tell frank Field, Ruth Smeeth and Dame Margaret Hodge and the others attacked by the Momentum idiots its all a 'right wing myth'. They will give you a severe reality check. Indeed Luciana Berger said recently:
“And yes, as I’ve said outside this place in Parliament Square, and it pains me to say this proudly as the chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, in 2018 within the Labour Party anti-Semitism is more commonplace, is more conspicuous and is more corrosive"
Is she wrong?
Is Chucka Umuna wrong? He told Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme:
"If you look at the definition of institutional racism as outlined by Sir William Macpherson in the Macpherson Report and the Macpherson Inquiry produced the institutional racism definition. The Labour Party, it's beyond doubt for me that it has met it - it's very painful for me to say that."
Nice try at deflection (proving another of my points) but when Labour MPs who have served the party (and their country) with honour and distinction like Frank Field has say there is a problem they need no help from 'right wing' media.
Oh by the way it is the function of journalism in a free democracy to hold people to account whether you or I like what they write and say or not. |

I love the way that people use the terms right wing and left wing like they actually mean something. As soon as you exit the Center ground then the differences are irrelevant. There's a great YouTube video where a guy read a speech of Hitler quotes to an "anti-facist" protest and they agreed with it and signed him up as a member after. You either agree with the right of individuals to hold private property that the state can't seize, or you don't. If you don't, then calling yourself a facist or a communist is irrelevant. |

Oh is there? Not deflecting again are you? Well you can copy / paste a link or three and give proof then can't you? Just making an opinionated statement does not make it fact.
By the way I would point out that the Tories are the only party to have had a Jewish Prime Minister - Disraeli and two Jewish Leaders. And in more recent times:
Leon Brittan: Home Secretary and EU Commissioner
Nigel Lawson: Chancellor of the Exchequor
Malcolm Rifkind: Foreign Secretary
Edwina Currie: Health Minister
Michael Howard: Leader, Home Secretary, SoS Environment, SoS Employment
John Bercow: A Tory who became Speaker of the House of Commons
Dominic Raab: Justice Minister and SoS Brexit
Not the record of an antisemitic party I would suggest.... |

"It is learned from parents, I coach under 12s and about 3 week ago an opponent called one of my players a fucking monkey, that's not bush, that's not media that is solely the responsibility of the parents
I'll be honest when I was in my 20's shopping a little boy came up to me being cheeky (in a cute way) & I called him a cheeky monkey. My partner said you can't call him that & I was like why? I use monkey a lot, not in a racist term but to describe someone who copies and never thinks. So annoying accountants i call "number-monkeys", bricklayers who don't think about what they are doing I call "brick-monkeys" and so on. It's a great word that perfectly describes the intent and sounds lovely. I'm not changing my language for a few snowflakes. "
Perhaps you should rethink the use of the word monkey, as they are very intelligent animals that do not just copy and not think. In fact they are very good at problem solving

It can be unlearned as well, I grew up in a village where chubby brown style racist jokes were acceptable among friends and relatives so it seemed normal, but I started travelling around a lot and mixing with people from all kinds of places and backgrounds once I got past my teens so my attitude is nothing like any of the casual racists I was surrounded by in my younger years. Oh here we go - Look first you accused all right wingers of being racist. Then after I demolished that you accused all Tories of being antisemitic. Now after I demolished that it proves I am a Tory? Is that the best you can do in an argument?
No defence for your false accusations, no defence of your (apparent) Leftie politics and all you do is deflect and accuse.
But no I am not a Conservative, never been a member and my family background? Grandads were Nottingham Miner and Oxford train driver, Mum was a Cook and Dad a clerk. Who I vote for is none of your business but rather than throw opinions about as fact at least answer the factual responses ... except you don't have any. |

Trawling through the thread, and seeing how it's mutated into a political slanging match, it's to clear to see one thing.
It's not about race, colour etc, it seems to be more about anyone being different in any way shape or form, be it appearance, belief or lifestyle.
The sooner we stop labelling everybody and having open dialect from individuals from all communities, with every one making an effort to understand perspectives the better.
But I dint think I'm the problem is as endemic as some would have you believe on a daily basis. |

"It can be unlearned as well, I grew up in a village where chubby brown style racist jokes were acceptable among friends and relatives so it seemed normal, but I started travelling around a lot and mixing with people from all kinds of places and backgrounds once I got past my teens so my attitude is nothing like any of the casual racists I was surrounded by in my younger years. I just get on with anyone regardless of colour or background.
I like this post .Ive learnt in this life that travel broadens the mind .I've been lucky enough to travel and work on many continents .Ive learnt we are all the same from China to Scotland to Peru we all want the best for our family we all need security and shelter and food and love and community and an opportunity to make a life .We also also all fear that which we don't know.So hopefully as the world gets smaller and more interrconected the concept of race and culture and us and thrm will be a thing of the past because we are really only one race the human race.
We have a shared human nature that you'll find anywhere. But layered on top of that are cultural differences and frankly, some cultures are superior to others.
Culture is a multifaceted thing .Its however a veneer and nothing more.We have more in common than our differences .Some cultures are inferior but all have something to offer ,because they are all part of the human experience ."
So you agree we can round up the inferior cultures for re-education classes |
