99 red balloons - a German singer / band?
On a positive note - two of the best singles ever and I think in the charts at the same time:-
Wishful thinking. China Crisis
Closest thing to heaven. Kane Gang
Some great stuff but Aldo the usual rubbish as always |

"Suzie and the banshees"
So that’ll be Siouxsie and the Banshees then?
Not exactly obscure, neither are the Buzzcocks- both still going (well Siouxsie is without the rest of the band) |

"Welcome to the monkey house by animal magnet. Huge hit in the Midlands but almost unheard of everywhere else? Great tune, well worth listening to on YouTube. "
Saw two lads going bananas to this at Butlins last December, great stuff |

Another one born too late for this era but absolutely love it. So much variety from Parliament funk to Gary Numan, Kraftwerk and stuff. I've recently discovered a whole world of post punk Japanese music from the late 70s early 80s that explains the undercurrent of references to Japan in a lot of the British pop at that time.
Most famous probably ymo - firecracker
https://youtu.be/OkkFST5qrLg
But logic system - unit is also great and others

"The Model .... Kratwerk ... anything Kraftwerk really
The drummer from Kraftwerk is playing a gig in a pub in Birmingham next week. I’m quite tempted."
...Pulls a Linn drum machine out of his brief case, plugs in in, programs it, presses play and strolls casually to the bar, where he sips his Becks from the bottle. Looking Uber cool, in that red shirt black tie combi. |

"Don’t forget all the rubbish Shakin Stevens and Adam Ant stuff. Then came the Stock Aitken Waterman garbage."
Adam Ant was and is a legend, I saw him and his new band at Brighton Centre a couple of years ago. Prince Charming is still a big hit at the clubs. |

"Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers Delight.
First rap song that became a world wide hit in 1980.
I still play it if I'm DJ'ing!"
Do you play Ooops Upside Your Head - The Gap Band as well, and get everybody to sit on the floor |

These could hardly be described as obscure bands or even oddities....
These might fit the bill better if you want obscure.....
Les Negresses Vertes
The Frank Chickens
Smith & Mighty
Eyeless in Gaza
Girls At Our Best
23 Skidoo
The Passage
Wall Of Voodoo

Bit before my time, but;
Probably not going to get more out there than Boyd rice. I pretty much expect nobody to know who he is. He is a very niche taste, and I will completely understand if you Google, and then come back and ask me if I am deaf (he actually did a colab with someone and called it 'easy listening for the hard of hearing').
We're throbbing gristle about in the eighties? Swans definitely were, I know that. Oh, and jarboe too |

Sign Of The Times, as per my list further up?
Wasn't a one hit wonder though - they also had hits with Iko Iko and The Clapping Song to name a couple |

I thought this thread was about obscure bands from the 80’s not a chart show....
I’m sure you have got some real obscure stuff....
So how about these ....
Young Marble Giants - Final day
Care - Flaming sword
Way Of The West - Don’t say that’s just for white boys
Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican radio
Bill Nelson - Rooms with brittle views
Girls At Our Best - Go for gold
Bourgie Bourgie - Breaking point

"Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Bit of trivia - Girls and Boys was originally done by them and not Blur.
"
Actually Blur's was the original - Wang Chung covered it as part of a project to get 80s artists to cover songs from other eras in an 80s style |

"This town ain't big enough for the both of us. I fucking love that song.
Not exactly obscure....
So what? It's still a great song and definitely odd. "
Definitely a good song, but not that odd..... and as it was a hit in 1974 not sure it even fits into the thread of late 70’s and early 80’s
Unless my maths is wrong....

"Some absolute tunes on here. Thanks for my music whikst im in the bath ha ha .
Lotus Eaters First picture if you!! What a song!!!! cheers!!"
I always wanted this to be used on the TV mini series called One Summer. As it seems to fit in nicely, but it wasn't to be. Mandela effect, I reckon.
The one that got David Morrissey and his friend Icky, on a trip to North Wales, to get to Benlech (Anglesey) Mountain (Snowdonia); geography was never their strong point, was it? |

"Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11
Yes! "
The lead singer is in a band called the Monticristos, and they perform that, often supports Marc Almond.
Will add Our lips are sealed /we got the beat from the Go Go's |
