Jaffa Cakes are legally defined as cakes. This was brought before a VAT tribunal back in the early 90's due to the way that chocolate covered cakes and biscuits are taxed.
McVities won the case on the basis that Jaffa cakes go hard when left open to the air like a cake would, whereas a biscuit goes soft, thus avoiding having to pay the same amount of tax.
Fun fact for all you fact fans! |

Jaffa cakes are the best biscuits in the world. Those 4ft tube versions at Christmas are the best ever. Who eats the edge, then the jelly then the base? |

I can easily inhale a packet of jaffacakes in minutes ,if not seconds.
I saw a megapack which I think was 6 packets in one, recently.
I didn't buy it as it would have been fartoo dangerous for me, I'd have OD-ed.
Death by Jaffacake...worse ways to go I guess. |

The multipacks I bought recently only had 9 in a pack not 12, and Im sure they were much smaller ! So maybe, just maybe it wouldn't quite kill you. Worth a try |

"Are cakes not biscuits !
Hoo likes a good Jaffa cake and do you shear them or keep them all to your self ? "
They are indeed cakes. Reason been they go hard when stale, not sure fr like biscuits. Oh and they’re all mine. Not sharing with anyone.

"They're a biscuit. That's why they're in the biscuit aisle & not in the cake aisle."
They are legally a cake which is why you don't pay vat on they like you do for chocolate covered biscuits. Although the aisle they are sold in was taken into consideration in the court case. |

Well running the risk of sounding like an old fart - they’re nowt like they used to be.
In fact they’re a crock o shit these days. They’re really thin, and hardly any orangey bit in at all.
At one time you could munch all round the edge, peel off the cakey bit, suck off the chocolate and be left with a lovely big orangey bit.
Now there’s just straggly little pieces.
I shoulda posted this on Thursdays rant really |

"Did you know that Jaffa cakes are actually made from apricot jam?!! I know... utter madness!! x
They used to be, but i think they have changed to Orange flavoured now #Imightbewrong lol"
I've just looked it up. They are made from apricot jam and tangerine oil. They get their name from a city in Israel/Gaza Strip.
