I've had a pair of elbow length, lace gloves stored away for a while. They're probably from the forties or fifties and are beautiful. My problem is that they have brown age stains on them. Can anyone suggest how I can remove the stains? I've tried washing in fairy liquid, biological washing powder and used a Vanish stain bar. I don't really want to dye them.
Thanks |

That's an idea. Do you mean use a domestic steam cleaner? I've got one somewhere. |

"Are you tuning all Burlesque on us?
Haven't got a scooby about the gloves by the way "
Ha ha, I have quite a collection of gloves. I like the elbow length ones, there's something so glamorous about them.
Burlesque, now there's an idea |

My ex worked in costume and she said if the Brown was rust marks then it won’t come out but otherwise try a stain remover and hanging the out in the sun. Be aware though that old lace can also degrade under uv (sunlight) so you may be better off dying them. Scarlet might be quite nice! |

"Have you tried bicarbonate? wet glove work bicarbonate into stain leave for 5mins then leave to soak in warm water with detergent in.....don't put them in the washing machine whatever you do "
White vinegar and lemon juice in water good at stain removal |

I will try that before I do any more I think. They're soaking in warm water currently and I see no signs of the stain shifting. |

If the other suggestions don't work I will have to dye them and I agree scarlet would be nice. |

My mum's answer (generally that is - being built like a brickhouse, I find lace so passe ) was always baking power and cold water, and leave to soak for 1hr+ before rinsing. Worked more often than not, and where it didn't, it didn't damage the fabric, so no worse off
Hmm x |

A few people have said that now. I'll give it a go. Thanks |

I'm going to try the bicarb first. It's handy stuff that. I use it to clean my silver jewellery |
