"Cynical marketing ploy or a company taking a risk for free speech ?!"

It is very clever.. people who used to hate the players who kneeled during the anthem now hate Nike too and despite people burning Nike’s trainers, Nike isn’t worried about that because their customer is not 40+ white male.. their ideal customers are young people and icons who help shape the culture.

In addition to the above Nike has gained £45M media exposure since the campaign started.

considering that most Trump voters are old middle to old age Americans and Nike is a global brand.. the campaign is going to win more people’s hearts globally than make a fraction of the amount of trump voters hate Nike.

So if you are worried about Nike, Nike is safe

"What is it? I dont watch tv"

They selected Colin Kaepernick, an outcast American football player and civil rights activist, as the face of its new global advertising campaign as its most divisive move.

He had been a polarising figure since 2016, when as a player for San Francisco 49ers he refused to stand during the national anthem. At first he sat as a protest, then sank to his knee. It was intended to draw attention, he said to, to the killings of African Americans and other injustices.

Share price went down. I must admit I have taken a chance and brought as many as I could afford.

One Ad and a few butthurt trainer burnings will not exactly bring the company to its knees.

Once the new Pegasus come out that price gonna soar.

To put the sweatshop mutterings in perspective.

Practically everything you own will have some component or ingredient that isn’t ethnically sound in it. From the precious metals in your tablets and smartphones that have been scraped out of a mountain in the Congo by a child indentured slave to the thread on your clothes.

Tragic but unavoidable really

Nike played a certain group of people brilliantly because all they saw was a billboard and a quote

They got outraged over 5 seconds in a 2 minute advert

They in effect burnt their gear over the inspirational stories of Alfonso Davies, and lebron James, and serena Williams....

Its shows the difference between black America and white America

It’s shows the difference between left leaning America and trumps America

Of course you’ll never anyone stupid enough to admit they burnt their gear over the ad... but you can guess the people criticising the ad won’t have seen the advert!

"Cynical marketing ploy or a company taking a risk for free speech ?!"

I don't think they have taken a risk for free speech, but I do think it is not a cynical marketing ploy.

I think it's more along the lines of taking a stand over free speech and any free publicity they get is a bonus. There is no risk. As has been said earlier in the thread, their target market are going to lap up the controversy, not hide away from it.

Would it make me buy their product? Unlikely. Their clothes are overpriced and I'm not a big fan of their running trainers (outside work and running, I wear Converse rather than traditional trainers)

Just a quick internet search , copy and pasted :

Black people are much more likely to be shot by police than their white peers. An analysis of the available FBI data by Vox's Dara Lind found FBI data.

Yes, white people are also shot and killed by US police, so are Hispanics.

The issue is that the proportion of black (and unarmed) people being shot is higher than any other ethnic group.

It's the same with the prison system there, there is a disproportionately high number of ethnic minorities behind bars. The argument is that the system is rigged against them (they are more likely to live in low income areas so unable to afford fancy lawyers who can get them off on a technicality and/or have a lenient sentence).

New Balance became affiliated with the alt-right movement in America after the company's Vice President of public affairs vocally supported Donald Trump's trade policies as being 'a move in the right direction'. After that trumpers voiced support for the brand and it deteriorated from there

According to the FBI statistics.

8000 black homicides.

233 were police shootings.

16 of them were unarmed (but that doesn't mean they weren't violently resisting).

64 police officers were killed while on duty (28 of them were black).

Of the 16 unarmed black shootings, 10 were shot by black police officers.

Black homicides made up 26% of the total despite only making up 13% of the population.

Hispanics we're 18% while being 17% of the population.

550 white people were shot and killed by the police, 78 of them unarmed.

That's correct but they also make up 52% of the criminal activity record despite being 13% of the population.

There's two stats that are telling 87% of white people are killed by white people while 90% of black people are killed by black people, yes exactly, were not going out at night on mass killing each other through racism!.

It’s an emotive subject. The flag and anthem are venerated in the states, to a lot of people it’s very much like blasphemy to in any way disrespect it. For example it’s illegal to drop the flag into the floor.

So the protest of dropping to the knee for the anthem whipped up a huge interest from the media. I’m not sure if it achieved much as it seems Americans fell on familiar sides of the argument.

Nike purely thought it would be worth the publicity. But it does set a precedent to show other businesses who may be afraid of speaking out against Trump and the far right who will boycott their products. Some other companies have tried similar tactics. Patagonia spoke out strongly against Trump pulling the US out of the Paris climate deal, as an example.

"Cynical marketing ploy or a company taking a risk for free speech ?!

Spot on.
