I’d like to share this with you all;

For those who don’t know me, I am a subcontractor for a diy store, fitting bathrooms

I believe I am also their only trans installer.

Since coming out the store I work for and my installation manager have been awesome.

Yesterday my installation manager visited my latest site for one of his surprise QA check visits.

Once that was complete we chatted and he said he hoped I didn’t mind but he had checked with his boss to see if they took the same stance as him on something;

He then told me, if I ever have a customer who is transphobic and asks for another fitter to replace me, then Wickes will refuse to deal with them. Refund them and send them elsewhere. They will not pander to prejudice.

It’s how I feel it should be it’s great to know they have my back.

Potentially if this ever were to happen, hopefully it never will, then they would be turning away several thousands of pounds of turnover for a principle.

By standing by their principals, employees and sub-contractors they may well get more custom.

It’s a win for everyone.

I’m just so pleased to have their backing after my experience with homebase where things suddenly changed negatively once I came out and led to my leaving.

It's fantastic your company is fully supporting you. It's a shame all businesses don't do the same.

Yesterday our local news featured a trans lady who had her bank account frozen because "she sounded like a man" over the telephone! The bank has apologized but can't guarantee it won't happen again.

I rest my case regarding you and any trans related thread.

If you truly had a bad experience with your installation it isn’t really anything to do with this thread.

As a Bathroom installer I have had a 100% record of very satisfied customers with Wickes. I’ve been fitting for them for 22 months and completed around 80 installations.

I’d like to think it’s both

There’s been a fair amount of conversation going on within the management and hr behind the scenes that I’m aware of but not party to.

I feel by coming out that I’ve made them take a look at procedure and policy.

They’ve handled it all pretty well so far.

I gave permission for them to make a note on my file that I am trans so when I get a call from the call centre, they expect a voice that isn’t clearly feminine, although I’m working on that.

A cynic might say that Wickes are simply covering their ass in case they ended up being sued but,at least they have been pro active and taken the initiative by deciding on the correct way to deal with a problem before it even arises.

They might. But then it’d be easy to just offer a different installer if a customer showed a negative reaction at the planning stage. I’d never know.

I do, however , know the people I work with and that’s not the way they think or operate.

"I’d like to share this with you all;

For those who don’t know me, I am a subcontractor for a diy store, fitting bathrooms

I believe I am also their only trans installer.

Since coming out the store I work for and my installation manager have been awesome.

Yesterday my installation manager visited my latest site for one of his surprise QA check visits.

Once that was complete we chatted and he said he hoped I didn’t mind but he had checked with his boss to see if they took the same stance as him on something;

He then told me, if I ever have a customer who is transphobic and asks for another fitter to replace me, then Wickes will refuse to deal with them. Refund them and send them elsewhere. They will not pander to prejudice.

It’s how I feel it should be it’s great to know they have my back.

Out of interest, has that ever happened to you or anyone you know? (A customer asking for another fitter based on appearance). "

It’s a bit more than appearance, but no, so far I’m not aware of anyone refusing to accept a fitter for sexual orientation or gender. I have heard of fitters having personality clashes and attitude problems.
