Noel Gallagher, modern day John Lennon?

Someone made this comment at work and it started a rather fierce debate, knowing that there's no shortage of fellow intellectuals here, I toss this into the ring here. What are your thoughts?

Noel Gallagher seems to have made a fortune rehashing old Beatles riffs and Bowie's All the Young Dudes

good luck to him

If Noel's a "Lennon" then Gary Barlow must be a "McCartney"

I've never been a Beatles fan but I appreciate talent, and have to say that in my view both Mr Gallagher and Mr Barlow are worthy of the praise they get

Noel Gallagher would be the last person to compare himself to Lennon and he'd be horrified to hear of such a comparison. I don't think of either of them as anything special tbh.

Actually I think he is a very clever songwriter, he delves back in time to older tracks and borrows licks and riffs.

He pays out and still makes a fortune.

King's Crustacean

I rate Noel Gallagher highly.

It's very easy for people to criticise but there's never anything substantial to back the arguments against him.

I put sommat somewhere in the forum about him a few weeks ago. I'll look for that.

I want his album for Chrissy ... I consider him a poet. His work is deep.

He doesn't...

"In an ideal world, I wouldn't write them, I can't stand it..."

"I'm not John Lennon. I'm not trying to say anything. I'm just trying to entertain people"

"If I were in the Beatles, I'd be a good George Harrison."

Gallagher is a very good and highly accomplished songwriter in his own right, I think he just wants to be seen as that, and would rather not be compared to others.

George Harrison is quality over quantity, the best track off the White Album is Long, Long, Long. Well underated song.

Don't get me wrong Noel Gallagher is a fairly talented songwriter who is very heavily influenced by what has gone before. John Lennon was a member of a group that less than 10 years after Rock n Roll came about, changed popular music forever. Over the next 8 years they wrote some of the most poplar pieces of music every written and also pushed the boundaries with albums like Sgt Peppers and the White Album. I'm not a big Beatles fan and think Lennon lost after they split, but you can't compare them other than to say that they both wrote songs, sing and play the guitar

The true measure of unique talent is not what we each think.....thats just personal choice......but rather what impact an individual had on influencing their contemparies and future generations.

Gallagher has done this to a degree, but Lennon is unsurpassed !!

He is no where near as good as the late john lennon and never will be ...my opinion only tho.

Have you ever personally known someone who has been shot dead?

Maybe if you had you would be less flippant in your response.
