WEEK THIRTY-SIX!!! Or there abouts!
.
MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug
.
.
.
Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!
It's Week Thirty-Six!!!
.
.
.
How is everyone doing?
.
.
.
EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:
EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).
From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.
.
.
.
FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:
"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.
.
.
.
FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:
Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.
.
.
.
FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN
We will be doing our third social at Great Denham parkrun on the 22nd September 2018. Please RSVP and I'll send the details of the parkrun and where we will meet for a social drink afterwards. Please remember to sign up for parkrun (and bring your barcode) if you want it to be an official time
.
.
.
AND FINALLY:
Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress. |

"10 km race last Sunday, a little 3 miler later and resting till GNR on Sunday. Anybody else doing it ?
No, but I know people who have!
Have a fantastic time "
I withdrew from this year's GNR due to extortionate costs for flights and accommodation, will be doing it next year (all being well) and have hotel booked and waiting for the flights to be released. Good luck to all who are doing it |

"Week 2 started of C25k
Good girl
I hate running swing! "
Give it a few weeks and you’ll see why so many love it - provided you get out and about.
I know more about the city through running than I ever did driving places |

Had an awful run yesterday. Head was elsewhere running late from work, gym was busy. Over done the 1st km at 5.40 where I should have been aiming at 6.15. Legs screwed. The problem is takes the machine a while to get to pace, and I struggle after work
Ended up doing another power 500m, a 5 min power walk at full incline, and had a full 15 min cycle. Legs have been killing today. Hopefully be ok for tomorrow. Aiming to do a light 3km in about 20 mins |

Might be worth having a couple of days off if your legs are sore, you don't want an injury!!
I know your determined and you are doing very well, but if you get an injury you will be back to square one |

It’s muscle tightness. I am used to it. I get it day 2 or next day sometimes. It was odd as I was warmed up and drank loads of liquid in the day but just didn’t feel it |

....or ditch a busy gym & get outside, warm still, sunny & you choose your pace 7 where you go, sooooo much better for a crowded brain. |

I've starting intermittent running this week. I'm walking between 5 to 8km a day with 3 days of he week doing intermittent running. In 2 months I've lost 17lb.
Is anyone else started intermittent running?

I guessed that was slow for you.
My current average is about 32 minutes. Your "gentle" pace is faster than my little legs could ever take me! |

You start day1 by walking 2min,run 1min repeat 7 times. Then day 2 rest. Day 3 walk 2min, run 2min, repeat 6 times Day 4 rest. Day 5 walk 2min, run 3min, repeat 5 times. At 6 and 7 rest. And so on. By the end of 8 weeks you should be able to run 30min.
I'm excited about it as I have never been able to run.
I will keep you posted of my progress |

That sounds like couch to 5k.
It's a good program - lots of people on this thread started out by doing it.
Good luck |

It's all about hard bloody work!
I was at best a 24 minute 5km runner for ages, but swapped up my training with a lot more sprint work and strengthening my core, and managed to work my time down this year
Fortunately my daughter is a sprint hurdler and likes to challenge me, beating me all the time |

It's a great and easy way to build and progress
People who think they could never run, suddenly find they can and are runners |

That was hard work! I used to do a track session every week with sprints and run 15 miles on a Sunday.
People have different abilities, not everyone can run a 17 minute 5k (I know someone who does). |

Today it was finally good to get back in the gym after a few recovery days and being on the piss last night
Managed 2km in 12.10 secs so pretty happy with that. So that is 6 mins 5 secs per km.....
I knew I had probably another km left in tank at that pace and I knew I could go a bit quicker over the 2km as well but as first session back since last Tuesday I didn’t want to over do it.
Then cycled for 15 mins, with a 5 min max incline power walk.....
I have set a goal over next couple of weeks to get my 2km down to 11 mins when I have done that. I will then reduce pace to 6.30 and do the final km so I am under 18 mins for 3km

Not been running as had a cold so been resting to fully shift it. Any ideas on a good lightweight head torch compatible with wearing glasses?
Subject to waking up and getting out of bed at such an obscene time on a Saturday morning I will be at the social. |

It's more about whether you're being seen....
If you intend to road run, or trail...
for trail running I have one of those triple headlamps that'll light up everything in my path, but have a simple lightweight from "decathlon" that fits the job for when I'm more urban
A lot does depend on your budget too. These triples, Chinese clones, can be had for under £20, but are more bulky and heavy, and can be over 300 lumens.
The onnight 410 from decathlon is 140 lumens, and again under £20

I (m) started to run about 10 weeks ago after realising I was gaining weight and losing fitness after quitting American football last year.
I started out with what was supposed to be a 1 mile run ' it turned out to be 2.5 miles. I guess underestimating is better than over estimating things as a man eh .
Anyways. Over the last 10 weeks I have built up the runs to 6.5miles averaging about an hour timewise and hitting 10k in around 56-57 minutes. The big bonus of all this. In that same time through some food changes and the 4 time a week run, I have dropped nearly 2 stone in weight |

Hi. M here. Did the great north run on Sunday. Not a great time though. Not sure why, but it was hot and lots of folks pulled up. Enjoyed the day though.

So I'm home from Marathon du Medoc and recorded my first ever DNF. Heat was savage (30 degrees) and no shade at all, my girlfriend really struggles in those conditions and we were pulled put by medics at around mile 18.
But fuck me it is an incredible race. It is hard to put in to words what is like but even not finishing it remains a highlight not just of running bit of my life. Plus not finishing meant we got to see so much more of the runners and costumes than we had done while running. The hospitality, camaraderie and sheer lunacy of those taking part and involved in the weekend is incredible to be a part of, certainly plan to be back next year |

I normally set it and leave it or if I know I can do faster I adjust it
Though due to tweaking my back on the tube when lifting bag to move it out of the way of the wandering zombies don’t know if a run is at all on this evening
Fuming as I wanted to go as well |

I did it in 3hr 30 mins.. all my training up to it had failed miserably through differing injuries, and was not gonna go but my son was in it and i'd promised him i would take him so i thought i may as well try and see how far i could get before i pulled out seeing i had paid my entry fee. i did a bit of trotting and walking and the last 3 miles was just walking as everything was hurting !!!!! but the crowd and other competitors just keep you going, they were brilliant, i was walking round like Douglas Barder for two days after but am ok now, gotta booked on for next year now |

How do you set your pace on a treadmill? Do you set it and keep adjusting, or set it and leave it alone?
I normally set it and leave it or if I know I can do faster I adjust it
Though due to tweaking my back on the tube when lifting bag to move it out of the way of the wandering zombies don’t know if a run is at all on this evening
Fuming as I wanted to go as well "
Run is off - no way on this planet can I manage even a light jog. Hot bath, followed by heat spray and ice pack and pain killers

"Welcome all - normally I am lot more positive so apologies!!!!!
Hopefully back will be ok for Sunday "
That's nothing good about being injured and not able to run
Just think of the positives if you can, enforced rest and look forward to when you can hit the road again |

"Practice 5.1k tonight racing against the fading light and going slow at one part trying to understand my ridiculous cheap watch and its app in 27 minutes 6 seconds. PR over 1k = 4 minutes 42 seconds
Well done Harry. What watch did you get?"
Unbranded Smart Bracelet. Uses Fundo app. No useful instructions so it's press hope and clueless asto what it does or how accurate it is.
On the bright side it alerts me when I get texts which is great for when my phone is on charge
Though the lower part of my thumb goes numb and tingly when I wear it.... |

Well done. You finished and that's the main thing it's not always about time. Us slowies at the back might be in awe of those fast ones at the front, but they are in just as much awe at us!
If you want to do it again next year, you must have enjoyed it |

Had to phone in sick for work - took me 15 mins to get out of bed and go to the loo as it had seezed overnight . Along with more pain than I have felt for a few years.
Sitting on couch now feeling sorry for myself. Can’t run can’t walk to go and get lunch. Generally fed up |

That sounds like you need an emergency chiropractor appointment. And a GP appointment for the pain. Have you got a bath? And someone at home who can help you out if you get stuck! |

Sorry if I come across as a nag, but take it easy. It's better to wait one more day than necessary, than go back to early and injuring yourself further... |

I'd be really careful exercising if you are struggling to walk at normal pace. You can't mess around with a dodgy back, see a specialist and take their advice. From bitter experience thinking "I'll be okay" can put you out for months |

Hi Mike, can only agree with the others... don't gym , unless it's a sauna, steam or jacuzzi!
you need to relax the muscles and back bone, not put it under further stress
If you can, use heat packs, hot water bottle or a microwave bag to ease it. Ibuprofen is also an anti inflammatory, try the gels if you can, and maybe a nice companion to massage it in |

Well I managed to get to the gym this morning. Spent about 20 mins in just stretching my back. I followed nhs advice.
I done a light 5km bike ride. I normally ride about 7.5km in same time. I had slept on an ice pack. My back has got better
I am still going to see if I can get to a ciropracter with work to see if I can get it looked at as well.

Woke up with painful twinge in left foot/ankle where I've had two breaks in last seven years (and lots of weakness).
Mobility is stiff though doesn't appear broken when I prod it. I gave one of ny best friends my balance board as I *thought* my ankle was finally strong enough, guess I'll be asking for it back.
Not running for a few days, walking with a little music and no spring in my step |

Might sound like a strange thing to say, but does it hurt if there is a change in weather. My knee can ache when it changes. |

No strange, I know what you mean. It doesn't react to that though it's the first ache I feel if I get a cold. |

Mike if you can't get anything through work contact the London School of Osteopathy, they are based in central London but a fraction of the price of most places. |

Not done much this weekend. Volunteered at Park run yesterday and marshaled at Harrow half today. Did manage a quick 6km this evening which was a shock to the system! Back on it now for a couple of weeks hard training as got a half in a few weeks and still toying with entering Beachy Head |
