Struggling for gym motivation

Mrs Pip here.

So, I joined the gym about a year ago, after being diagnosed with arthritis in both knees, at some kind of advanced stage. I decided that I was going to help fix the problem my weight and choice of lifestyle has cause.

I lost around 7 stones with slimming world (3 or 4 years ago), but ended up putting a couple back on when the honeymoon period of being a size 12 set in.

I stopped going to the gym when I went on holiday in June. I've since returned to slimming world and am nearly at a stone loss.

So I can get back to eating what I should, but every time I finish work, coming home seems far more appealing than going to the gym. So much so I've only been once since I came back from holiday.

So my question, how do you motivate yourself to go and do whatever exercise it may be? In need of suggestions, because once I'm there, I love it!

Positive suggestions, play nice please people

A lot of motivation can be around setting yourself goals and targets

The problem you seen to be facing is the transition of going home and then inertia sets in and you don't want to go back out.

Is there any way to change the times you might go to the gym?

Mornings or lunch times, rather than after work?

And as for motivation , set a target and reward yourself at the end of it, for myself I aim at running in several events through the year, which keeps me going, and always indulge myself after an event, whether it's buying new gear, or even a visit to a club

The gym is actually next to work, and I live 20 miles away. Mornings just don't work out because of mainly work related and other issues, evening is just the time that works, or doesn't as it seems!

I have a final target, weight and fitness wise - i'm doing the gym to get fit and tone up, rather than lose weight. Once I reach that I have a tattoo planned .. that's the reward side..

I just force myself to go even when I'm not feeling it. I might not like it while I'm there but I always feel better afterwards

I go because I'd never get laid otherwise. Still struggle to anyway but I think being in decent shape sort of helps

Just finished my first gym session in over 3 years. It was tough! Having a gym buddy can really help to motivate you so I’m currently trying to recruit for that very role

Put it in the diary and have your kit in the car, once you are there you'll find the motivation

Also take a snack to eat at work an hour before to give you some energy...

The first few sessions of getting back in to it when I have had a break are the hardest.

Once you go a few times, it becomes a habit and it feels weird not going.

Stick at it until it becomes a habit, then you'll start noticing changes in your shape and appearance and that will be your motivation.

Finally!

Motivation returned and I managed to do a session this morning, albeit a little briefer than usual!

Does it have to be a gym plenty of ways to get exercise eg cycling squash tennis badminton swimming and they require somebody to do it with which can be a motivation

I'm also finding it difficult to motivate myself to go to the gym. I used to go regular with a friend but they moved away and find it hard to exercise there on my own so at the moment I'm just going for a long walk every day which at least is something!
