A luxury sports car outing in Japan has ended in what may be one of the most expensive car crashes in history.

Eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes, a Lamborghini and two other vehicles were involved in the pile-up in the southern prefecture of Yamaguchi.

Media reports estimate the damaged cars are worth at least 300m yen ($3.85m; £2.46m) in total.

The sports cars - driven in convoy by a group of automobile enthusiasts - were on their way to Hiroshima, reports Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun.

Police say they believe the accident, which took place on Sunday, happened when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the crash barrier.

"A group of cars was doing 140-160km/h (85-100mph)," an unidentified eyewitness told Japanese broadcaster TBS. "One of them spun and they all ended up in this great mess."

"I've never seen such a thing," highway patrol lieutenant Eiichiro Kamitani told AFP news agency. "Ferraris rarely travel in such large numbers."

C'mon Wishy, that's just petty cash.

It's not that long ago some 260 German cars were involved in a major pile up, with some deaths IIRC.

Porsches, Beemers, Audi's, Mercs ain't cheap (*) never mind the personal insurance payouts.

(*) Hell, even Golf's ain't cheap.

Lightweight.

That's trouble with sports cars they're fast, but oh so easy to lose control of and are awesomely fragile.

I saw a head on accident in Earls Court between a Mazda RX8 and a Volvo.

The Mazda (who's fault it was) a total write off, Volvo not a scratch and a Aussie laughing at a disgruntled estate agent pointing at the two cars as he mocked.

"You drive a fucking RX8, I drive a fucking Volvo, that's fucking why"!!!!!

Apparently a Toyota Pruis also got caught up in the accident. But I read it happened in Germany? There can't possibly have been two accidents like that! lol
