"what is it?"
You sell on the likes of eBay with goods that you don't have...then you buy it usually from china...to which you have added a good mark up. Then they send it to the buyers address direct. But the biggest drawback is the buyer thinks it's already in the UK and is expecting it in a couple of days. But in reality it takes weeks to arrive from china and will piss off your buyers. |

Aka fraud?
If you're selling something you don't possess, without explaining you're the middleman, then it's fraudulent activity. |

I suppose if they explain what they are doing it is legal...but then people will look to China to buy it direct.
So it's a lose lose situation imo. |

Some very interesting replies . bearing in mind it completely legal and simply acting as a middle man.
I'm sure there are, as in all aspects of business ,scanners ,cheaters etc.
I suggest you look at the limes of shopify for guidance and of course you tube. Prior to making such scathing comments.
Feel free to add more |

I've only explained the reality of it imo. But if you know so much about and you want to go ahead just do so...but you didn't you asked for people's views on here and you are never going to get the answers you may want here. |

There is absolutely nothing illegal or fraudulent about dropshipping.
Unfortunately the eBay/China example given early on in the thread has clouded the subject.
Drop shipping is normal practice in mail order and internet retailing, and most of the time would involve distributors based in uk or Europe.
Bear in mind if a distributor or supplier offers dropship option to you the chances are there are a vast number of other sellers as well - which may result in prices and margins being eroded away as everyone attempts to attract the consumer to buy from you.

Thank you for the clarification. Its interesting how this subject was an enquiry by myself for comments and has resulted in part by some small minded individuals ,who know nothing about the concept or process as a measure of my personal character. Maybe more an insight into their own
Withhold judgement on the absence of evidence.
Back to the subject. Indeed margins of profit can be minimal in a competitive market. Therefore finding a niche area is an interesting project.
Until I became aware if this process , I didn't realise I'd bought many goods myself via this method on e bay, amazon and gearbest etc.

Hi.
I'm sure there are many who are fraudulent . but as you say. The concept is normal business practice.
People simply don't understand or are unaware of a fundamental aspect of commercial business practice.
Glad I picked the topic, some interesting points of view |

Is that a legal requirement in the context of dropshipping in the UK?. I'm asking as you may be better informed than I on such matters, and this topic is an exploratory exercise on dropshipping
Thanks |

Hmmm...
You can also buy good quality low price goods from Hong Kong. The postal system in HK is amazing & the things get to the UK in a few days BUT:
How boring...wouldn't you rather do something more interesting in order to make money?
& To get low price goods from China, you probably have to buy in bulk anyway, so just buy the stuff & when it arrives in the UK sell it then...
OR consider the impact of the high price of low cost goods on people's lives & go& work fora good cause instead... |

Thanks for your comments. The process has a minimal outlay, though you can expand to more sophisticated platforms similar to gear best.
The claims of apparent but not actual fraud as cast on the basis that Otu don't buy goods with your own money.
Customer pays for item, you buy it and ship of to them. No capital loss on unsold stock.
Boring ,possibly. For an outlay of 5-10 hrs per week . may be an interesting project in its own right.
Money isn't an issue as I'm semi retired and solvent.
But thanks again

Apparently ,the Chinese affluent markets crave anything made in the west ,its perceived to be of a higher quality apparently.

Not technically true.
The affluent Chinese crave the western brand names.
Chances are the product is manufactured in their own country

Very... and some bordering on defamation too.
BTW my latest dropship was a Lay-z spa hot tub bought from 'Tesco' and delivered directly from Bestway (the manufacturer).... Tesco took the order and never saw the goods... just took a cut of the profit. |

"Fraud. Please check the legality of the concept prior to assuming the legal context of fraud is breached.
Did you not see the question mark?"
Thank for highlighting the question mark. Apparently ( from a corporate lawyer I know ) its not fraudulent at all. If you state you have the items in stock and give false delivery lead times, that's a different matter.
However, it is good business acumen to clearly state the avarage lead time on delivery eg if shipment from manufacrure is on average 14 days then its sensible to state this and not create false expectations re delivery.
Also. Customer service . problems and returns. You do have a moral responsibility in my opinion to manage genuine issues for the customer.
.
If you're interested in learning more, even from a point of forming a critical argument about the concept, shopify may be a good place to look.

Its how most companies work, its simply that individuals are getting involved as middle men.
An associate has put an offer in on a business taking 20,000/month after 2 years set up.
The owner specialises in setting up such businesses and selling them on.

Correct re. Customer service . Although it isn’t just a moral obligation - it’s a legal requirement . The contract of sale has taken place between the customer and you (regardless of where or who has actually fulfilled the order).
