95 year old legit Nazi, Jakiw Palij is being deported from the US to Germany. Palij was an SS guard at various death camp.

I totally get my Americans wouldn't want him in their country. At the same time, i think people are keen to gloss over the complexities of his case. We all love to smell our own farts and pretend we'd have been the Oskar Schindler of the day. Famous experiments such as The Milgram experiment have long proven that to be false. That's the one where 65% of people would administer a lethal electric shock to another person just because they were told to. There wasn't even a war on!

As Marian Keyes said, we hate most in other people, what we see in ourselves.

What will Germany do with him?

Does he have a family now in the USA?

How long was he in the USA and how long did the deportation proceedings take?

I’ll go Google...

I went to a holocaust survivor talk on Sunday. He was asked once what would he do if he met Hitler.

His reply he would show him his beautiful daughters and grandkids and say “we are still here”

He has no hate in his heart he was the most chipper 88 year old I have met.

We are still here.

Never again.

"What will Germany do with him?

"

Stick him in a nursing home and wait for him to die

"

"

The article implies not

"

A very long time. He's been there 25 years. A judge revoked his citizenship in 2003 so 15 years to deport him.

Let's all forget operation paperclip quickly so we don't see the hypocrisy.

I think never again is the most important thing now. But it will happen again if we gloss over the complexities and just say "oh there was a bad man and his bad friends but it's ok because the goodies stood up to them".

He spoke of his fear about what’s happening today. It’s very telling when certain politicians share platforms with people who pose an existential threat to his existence today. The emails and letters he receives from within the Uk are shameful.

He does it all on his own at 88 all the travel and even goes into prisons to talk. Brave man

I reckon most of us would save our own skins if it came to it. Even in the gas chambers the fitter ones climbed over the weaker to try and get out.

It's nice to think we would be resistance fighters but I'm not sure what I'd do to be honest.

The father of an older relative of mine opposed Franco. The entire family nearly starved to death in the cave where they hid. I don't know if I'd be prepared for that level of sacrifice.

I think there's a tendency in human nature to scapegoat 'other' groups and it needs to be constantly combatted. It currently isn't, the left and right just disagree on who the correct groups to scapegoat are.

I don't think Trump is very like Hitler at all, but they do share a technique in how they got elected. They were both entirely shameless in the sense that they would say whatever they deemed crowds wanted to hear. So both go to different crowds and try different lines to see which lines get the best response. Then those are the ones they keep repeating. They'll say whatever they need to in order to get elected and that's what makes them scary. Clinton isn't any better either, she just wasn't as good at the technique.

We know that the vast majority of us would have gone along with it. Especially in Britain where we love a good rule. The problem is that everyone is the 1% resistance in their head and that stops honest exploration of the issues. I've been to one of the camps, there's nothing I wouldn't do to keep my family out of one of those.

Honest exploration of many issues is stopped by 1% of people I'm afraid.

We've already got one would-be Oskar Schindler on the thread. What a shame he was born at the wrong time and will never get to demonstrate his impenetrable moral fibre.

America like all the other allies, Britain, Soviet Union and France overlooked many many war criminals to get them to work for their own post war programmes.

Only a fraction of the crimes against humanity were ever brought before any court.

Nuremburg trials were a showpiece event. .

Only ex guards and other low ranking officers, men and officials were hunted.

The Israelis found most and dealt with them when they could.

Although guards etc are guilty of crimes they are being made the scapegoats for much much larger fish

My family’s mother side of the family emigrated from Germany to the US in the 1870s (my grandfathers grandfather) and my grandfather was fighting the Nazi’s 42/45

The period of the third reich isn’t as easy as people see, there are a lot of complexity’s associated with it. After WW1, German was in severe depression, with the the allies implementing the treaty of Versailles

Yes Jews were persecuted, but that they had been persecuted across Europe prior to 1900 as well as in the UK. Hitler came in to power and used his anti-Semitic retroic, to blame the Jews for the depression. What people forget it was also _omanies, interlectuals, homesexuals that were also persecuted.

Across Europe, a lot of people joined the third reich because if not they themselves would end up in a labour camp or worse. What do you do?, I agreed any soldiers that work in the labour camps should be prosecuted. But where the situation is a lot greyer is when it’s not soldiers but normal germans that were involved. There was germans helping the Jews, but also millions were reporting them as well.

I have been to both the Prague ghetto, and Warsaw ghetto, as well as attending a camp outside of Berlin, as for me I see both sides of my heritage.

That's what French people never want to talk about, all the Nazi collaborators that were in the occupied countries. Quick, let's round up all the people the wore uniforms to deflect from the people that were doing the same things but not wearing them. In horrible circumstances like that, the vast majority of us do what we need to in order to stay alive. The only sensible stratgey is to stop it happening again rather that white washing it.

It's funny how we chastise the Nazis yet revere and build statues of the slave traders.

Stourbridge

Former colleague used to guard Hess when it was the British rotation in Spandau.

He always said the Russians kept him there to maintain a presence in the area.

Look at how Albert Speer got away with building the camps and infrastructure, he ended up as a business guru because he was useful.

The Zonder commando units in the camps who were Jews used to control people for more food.

The people who fought to the death for the amusement of the guards. They did it because they wanted to stay alive.

Unfortunately we aren’t all perfect and many would do things that are currently unthinkable in order to survive.

That’s why I would want to go in the first blast of a nuclear war rather than live with the chaos.
