Women aren't Funny
Jump to: Newest in thread
Is a documentary by female comedian Bonnie McFarland who starts out convinced that the reason she's hit the glass ceiling in stand up comedy is her gender.
So she decides to do a set with a full on make over to look like a man, beard included. It all comes crashing down, her set completely bombs. Turns out that being a woman wasn't her problem (gasp).
What's interesting is to go and watch her do stand up normally and... well it's pretty good actually. A solid 7/10 but some obvious areas of improvement in delivery. It then emerges that most the problem is her beta male husband who says the reason she bombed was that the audience was full of foreigners who just didn't understand her. The reality is that she was dreadful that night, probably because she was thrown off by expecting to have an easy ride.
Anyone seen it, her or interested? |

The documentary was 2014 and the stand up i said was 7/10 was 6 months old. I honestly don't know if she was capable to those performances in 2014 or whether the documentary was the wake up call that made her work on her skills. |

But some professional comedians did some analysis of the 2014 set where she bombed and the jist was that the jokes had potential in the sense there was a logic and a punchline, But the delivery sucked. I'd still say her delivery is the weakest aspect but some of her jokes were so good that you could read them on paper and laugh out loud. |

It’s always easy to blame other factors for your lack of success isn’t it? It’s often hard to accept that it’s your own abilities (or lack of) that might hold you back.
Now I’m not saying that prejudice doesn’t exist, as I know damn well that it does, but it’s not *ALWAYS* the case that your gender, race, sexuality or disability is the reason that the average white bloke did better than you ... sometimes some self reflection is required! |

"Not seen it but will Google.
The only female comedians i find mildly amusing are Jo Brand and Zoe Lyons as i like their delivery. "
Jo Brand has been doing the same shtick for 30 years, slagging off her husband, eating to much cake and going on about tampons. |

I did a thead on Christopher Hitchens saying women aren’t funny a while back. Basically he said women had no need to be funny, but men do if they want to attract women. |

Easy tiger, she’s only been married 21 years.
And the main source of comedy for a lot of men is the women in their life. You make fun of what you know.

To be fair to her, her fucking husband was the problem. Constantly in her ear about how nothing was her fault and she's hysterical. He was totally imbalanced in his feedback. |

That's more about averages though. This was a specific individual convinced that there was only one thing holding her back from "killing it". As with most things in life, there was no short cut, it was just lots of little things about her skill level holding her back. |

Epic fail. She's the polar opposite of the example I've given.

HB appeals to a niche which is why she does small venues and is stagnant in her skills. Bonnie McFarland is actually progressing and working on her skills and I wouldn't see any fundamental reason she couldn't go on to draw crowds in the high thousands and be a top tier comedian. |

Ahem, let’s not go back on our words, eh...”stagnant in skills” and saying one is “progressing and working on her skills” - where’s your proof that one is and one isn’t? It’s all subjective speculation.
It’s another case of you saying something, making a leap, and then saying it’s proof of something it isn’t proof of. It’s your MO. |

No it's not, go on YouTube and watch professional comedians break down the routines and explain exactly what's going on. I'm not a pro so I can't do that, but if you want the evidence about what actually makes a joke work, good and bad delivery etc then it's all out there and easy to find. |

Michael McIntyre fills out stadiums and he’s lowest common denominator shit, it doesn’t mean anything. Why are you judging how funny someone is by how big a venue is ?! Some of the best comedians on the circuit, will never make it to the mainstream cause they’re not doing material for the masses. Heard of Daniel Kitson, he’s a fucking genius ?! |

Because that's the context of the thread. It's about a glass ceiling. Bonnie wasn't complaining that she didn't have a cult following within SJWs. She was saying she couldn't crack the top tier because of her gender. |

The one I saw was 7/10. She was funny but not man hating or 'woman focused' in the clip I watched. It was from 2016.
Hannah G's routine was just about being gay. That clip was from 2017.
But that's the only 2 clips I've seen (one clip of each) so I know it's not representative. |

I saw a 2018 clip but yes, that was what was good about it. She was taking about issues she's passionate about but at the same time, making it relatable to a broad audience. That's the sweet spot of combining your passion with skill. |

"Did she try it again when she was ready for it? Interesting experiment.
The documentary was 2014 and the stand up i said was 7/10 was 6 months old. I honestly don't know if she was capable to those performances in 2014 or whether the documentary was the wake up call that made her work on her skills.
I've just watched her doing a fairly recent routine. She seems ok.
Would you say 7/10 is fair? The encouraging thing is that delivery is probably the easiest thing to fix.
The one I saw was 7/10. She was funny but not man hating or 'woman focused' in the clip I watched. It was from 2016.
Hannah G's routine was just about being gay. That clip was from 2017.
But that's the only 2 clips I've seen (one clip of each) so I know it's not representative.
Whooooosh. "
What do you mean? |

The fun thing about opinion presented as fact is that you can’t argue with it and that’s a fact! |

I saw a 2018 clip but yes, that was what was good about it. She was taking about issues she's passionate about but at the same time, making it relatable to a broad audience. That's the sweet spot of combining your passion with skill. "
Bonnie? The clip I saw seemed like she'd be more mainstream and appeal to a wider audience. There was one cringe worthy thing she said that she would have been slated for if it was a man that said it. |

Yes Bonnie, she probably will in time, she does a lot of high profile TV at the moment. |

Interesting that she sells out so many huge venues but she's not even in the top 100 earning comedians. You're being quite intellectually dishonest so I can't really be bothered to argue anymore. |

*You* make me laugh. How apt.
I’m sorry you weren’t happy that the conversation others were having didn’t suit your fixed viewpoint, and that has left you feeling disgruntled.
You really should watch Nanette.
It’s just taken off massively, google the articles.
“Gadsby was virtually unknown in the United States, and her special arrived with little fanfare. But over the past few weeks, “Nanette” has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon.” NY Times.
Also, my intellectual integrity stands up to scrutiny, unlike some people’s. |

"Is a documentary by female comedian Bonnie McFarland who starts out convinced that the reason she's hit the glass ceiling in stand up comedy is her gender.

Most comedians are not even funny but people seem to piss them selves laughing at any old crap.
The fact that some people follow the crowd laughing yet if you asked them what the joke was they couldnt repeat it is much more funny than the wanker on the stage.

I've only read the opening post as i'm off out.
I'm replying to B.B. because i'm really interested in this for a variety of reasons and will definitely do a little research. I can already see flaws in her methodology but i'll read before I comment.
Tra for now , I'm off out. |

I think we can all agree that samples of 1 aren't scientific! But try and see as much of her stuff around 2014 and then today. I'd be interested to hear if you think her skills have progressed as SteelHeels was kind enough to send me a link to something fairly recent that I'd rate even better than 7/10. |

You can’t control what you find funny, like the way you can’t control who you’re attracted to. So the fact you don’t find most comedians funny, doesn’t mean they aren’t funny to other people. I love Billy Connelly, but I can’t remember hardly any of his jokes, because he doesn’t do ‘gags’. |

Absolutely, it’s all about the delivery in that aspect. Some people can read a shopping list and have you in stitches |
