Yes, very impressed by it. A stand up show (doesn't really cover it) but one with the capacity to make you think - a lot.

I watched it last night. You’re right OP it’s more than just stand up.

It’s very challenging (in a good way) to me as a straight white male. Lots of food for thought.

If she does that show every night it must be mentally and emotionally exhausting.

It’s more of a one woman show. It starts in a more traditional stand up way, but moves to something that is more uncomfortable and challenging.

I’m not sure enjoyable is the right word to use.

If you’re looking for pure escapism this isn’t the thing to watch.

Based on what i know, I think you've described it accurately and fairly. You used the word "challenging" above, that's a good term. It doesn't suit my tastes but i understand why other people want these issues discussed more.

Watching clips completely misses the “experience” and intent - as does reading a review without watching and deciding it’s not to taste etc. Not being confrontational, I truly believe this to be the case.

If you’re interested in knowing what it is then really simply the best thing to do is watch it - it grossly oversimplifies it to try and explain it or grasp it from snippets - and I would challenge anyone that likes to argue against “identity politics” etc to actually do so, I’d respect them more for bothering.

Yes, it’s Netflix where you’d need to access it in full, and you can get a free pass then cancel, I believe if you’re not normally a Netflixer.

Hello everyone! I saw Estella mention this program on a couple of threads recently, so decided to check it out.. I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I’ve seen something so moving and thought provoking. I have watched it again, and still feel in awe. A truely magnificent piece of work that deserves more than a few minutes of clips on YouTube. I would love to see her debate. Definitely going to be looking into more of her work. Daisy x

The language she uses, really grates on me.

"I don't hate men, but"

Wow, doesn't that sound a lot like "I'm not racist, but"

"I am afraid of men". Interesting. Not some men, but all men. I guess that's different to when UKIP councillor was expelled because she admitted having a problem with black people.

And after describing her own abuse, she asks "Tell me why was that ok?". Sorry, who said it was ok?

"70% of the people who raised me believed that homosexuality was a sin". It's funny that I was told that being white means I can't have an opinion on what black people think cultural appropriation is. But atheists can tell religious people what sin is, even though they don't even believe in the concept.

Its funny how people like her don't feel obliged to follow the same standards of language they set for other people. Change the targets of what she said to Muslims or blacks and you easily get hate speech.

Part of the skill of a comedian is to present the audience with uncomfortable subject matter, but in a way that makes it safe, or at least acceptable, to engage with different points of view. This is why conservatives don't hate Robin Williams stand up, even though his material has a pro-democrat bias. He got the balance right and chose his words carefully. Same with Ricky Jervais. If you want a feminist who can achieve this then Bonnie McFarlane.

Oh BB, you do appear to lack, for me, an ability to get out of your own bubble and not simply empathise, but to actually hear and understand with compassion another human’s perspective, and not make it about you.

I read an article today about how people learn these skills and how it actually requires direct exposure to people in different situations to you and with different perspectives (not just reading about them and keyboard theorising) - I’d love to invite you to come and spend time with some. Perhaps it will help you understand different people’s views, which you say is something you’d like to understand better...

It disturbs me that your comments above are all you took from the entire show. I don’t perceive you to be that unintelligent (my opinion) or in need of negating her. But perhaps I’ve misjudged you.

She was talking about why she feels uncomfortable as the only woman in room full of men, precisely because of her own personal experiences.

I said watch it. Not you have to agree with it. I said to try and explain it to persuade oversimplifies and won’t do it justice.

You say, you don’t wanna watch it.

So don’t try and argue against it, or tell me I am doing something I’m not just because you can’t be arsed to watch it (your call) and I don’t have to be arsed to pander to you and help you out because you don’t want to (my call).

I said nothing in the clips I've seen, the trailers or the reviews I've read, makes me want to watch it. If you could sell the benefits to me, then i might change my mind. Even if you don't change my mind, other people reading this might change theirs.

For some baffling reason, people like you think this kind of thing should be immune from the typical commercial pressures of marketing and encouraging people to watch it via good trailers etc. Half the reviews say it should be mandatory viewing in schools, that's hardly going to fly with a libertarian section of the audience. Shall I post links to all the threads where you mock my username? Thanks for making my whole point for me, those on the hard left never hold themselves to the same standards they set for others. Then it baffles them why their presumption of the moral high ground irritates everyone else.

"Total ideologue!

So basically you can't defend her language, which i object to. The trailer looks rubbish to me and I'm supposed to watch it because... reasons. Look i get why you like it, and you liking it isn't bothering me, I'm not telling anyone they shouldn't watch it. But you started a thread on it and it seems you only want to hear from people who agree with you.

Here we go, telling me what I think rather than using my words and understanding them...

You bang on about not being an ideologue because you listen to everything and don’t just assume from one perspective.

You clearly aren’t doing that. So I’m using your worthless insult to others, right back at ya.

You think I lack empathy, I'm the one who gets why you and your SJW poodle like it. You can't understand why i don't like what I've seen. "

Resulting to rude personal insults now?

Calling another poster a poodle?

Oh dear.

You are not entitled to a marketing sell from me, I don’t have to explain or persuade you to watch it. I made a recommendation and some people have watched it. Some will watch and like it, some won’t. You don’t want to watch it, so don’t. It’s no loss to me. But I do get to call out the idiocy, in my view, of you making an argument against something you haven’t even watched. You can be disheartened or frustrated by that, but factually the reality is you’re making comments on a subject you don’t know about. And on a personal level, that stance and your inability to own the hypocrisy of it, has lost any respect I might have had for your self proclaimed openess to hearing differing perspectives, as when it comes down to it you appear to want to reside in your predetermined conceptions, and that’s the action of an ideologue.

There’s no point discussing it further. I’ve no ill will to you, but I won’t be insulted for having an opinion and view that you don’t like.

It would help if you understood the difference between those to things, but since you can’t pass off someone else’s opinion as your own, you’re clearly out of your depth.

Why is it lacking integrity or intellectually dishonest to say that trying to soundbite it un explanation oversimplifies and misses the experience of watching it?

You either fail to understand what those words mean, or you’re saying I have lied or am being stupid for not wanting to dilute or misinform through oversimplification the essence of what it was that made me recommend the show in the first place.

That’s just rude and intellectually dishonest of you.

Again, don’t watch it if you don’t want to. No one is forcing you; but you are being very odd with what you feel you’re entitled to. It’s a little strange.

"I made comments on what I have seen. Vine was the only person with the integrity and intellectual honesty to answer my question about the context of what i haven't seen."

This is another tactic of yours. You single out one person as having ‘integrity’, ‘intellectual honesty’ or equally misguided platitudes, and in doing so attempt to have a dig at everyone you haven’t mentioned.

Where’s the ‘intellectual honesty’ and ‘integrity’ in admitting that you have once again been called out for presenting others’ opinions as your own, on something you do not understand because you refuse to watch it for yourself?

"Watching clips completely misses the “experience” and intent - as does reading a review without watching and deciding it’s not to taste etc.

No, you don’t. She wasn’t targeting men in the same unfounded ways that people might use hate speech against Muslims or black people.

She was talking about why she feels uncomfortable as the only woman in room full of men, precisely because of her own personal experiences.

Which is quite different to her saying ‘I hate all men, just because.’

So she's in the same category as "I don't like all black people because one black person robbed me at gun point". "

You’re missing the point. She isn’t saying she hates all men.

I think if someone spoke the way she did about being robbed at gunpoint by a black person, and subsequently found it intimidating to the only white person in a room full of black men, that would be just as valid.

And altogether different from the unfounded “I’m not racist, but...” rantings of a stereotypical Daily Mail reader.

I would disagree that they are the same standards though. Hers is a well thought out, articulate talk on how she feels, based on obviously traumatic events.

That’s a quite different standard to much of the racist / xenophobic / misogynistic nonsense you might typically see in some of the right wing press.

But then again, context and actually watching it might bleeding help. But here we are instead babyfeeding explanations (actually not me, because I find the entitlement of requiring someone else to emotionally labour to compensate for someone else’s laziness to put effort in abhorrent).

"Has anyone else watched it?

Fucking ace.

(Available on Netflix)

Is it the one where there's a section where she talks in detail about her personal experience of sexual assault in a totally non-comedic way?

That’s a bit of an over simplification but yes.

Ok so I've seen the clips of that bit and didn't enjoy it. What's the context I'm missing?

I’m not sure enjoyable is the right word to use.

If you’re looking for pure escapism this isn’t the thing to watch.

Based on what i know, I think you've described it accurately and fairly. You used the word "challenging" above, that's a good term. It doesn't suit my tastes but i understand why other people want these issues discussed more. "

BB, can I ask why you didn't leave it there but instead started sticking labels onto people who hold a different opinion to you? 'Feminist', 'people like her', 'people like you', 'the hard left' are all coming thick and fast from you.

If you've seen it, make a comment. If not, say why not but why try and turn it into another rant about people you don't like? It reminds me of the smarmy politicians who get asked a question by an interviewer and say with a mocking smile "that's not really the question, the question is this" and then go to justify their own insecurities.

As for not getting it after some clips, some things can't really be meaningfully crunched down into a snippet or a soundbite or a few lines on a forum. Doesn't mean they're not worth considering.

O o O oo

You can't really complain that you are being called something different than your name when you have previously changed a users name round in a derogatory way and dressed it up as banter when challenged.

Going by posts since that event it doesn't look like banter at all

Can the people who obviously rub each other up the wrong way avoid each others posts if they are a problem for you

Thanks
