As the title says guys n girls, how do you all cope with this condition?
I have had asthma since 3 years old, turned into COPD about 4 years ago, along with emphysema too.
Just wondering if any of you lot (males mainly) are also sufferers? And how you cope with the illness, any tips on how to improve breathing techniques etc.

My gran had it and I remember her coughing bad all the time especially in the morning.
I think the best thing to do is look at your lifestyle and make changes. It’s hard to say really cause it’ll be different from person to person.
If you smoke, I’d defo stop |

I’m deffo gonna ‘try’ and stop smoking very soon... it’s my only stress relief though, and as stupid as it sounds, it helps me to cough up some crap sometimes... and breathe easier afterwards.
I don’t do much in the way of exercise, as my job is mainly sitting on my bum... a driver!
A light gentle stroll sometimes maybe, but not too far! |

I don’t mean to sound horrible here, but the fags WILL DEFO NOT help you. I remember being in the hospital on the COPD ward and seeing everyone there struggling for breath, and all they could say was ‘I need a fag’. It’s the fags that put them there.
you need to improve your health until it’s too late. Stop smoking now and find some other stress relief. I’d also try to go for regular walks, short at first and then increase the distance to improve your cardiovascular system. Eat healthy too! |

I quit smoking 3 months ago as I was due an operation at first I thought would be hell don’t cold turkey it especially if you a proper smoker not a casual one.
You definitely need stop ASAP esp if you now developed further in your condition, I promise it’s not really helping you cough up stuff it’s causing the walls of the mucosa to tighten and release making you feel it’s helping we’re infact the smoke is irritating the airway linings and making you cough this traps smoke in side which causes further build up of crap.
Exercise is good you need to walk till out of breath this will improve in time

I work with a woman with it, she's a heavy smoker and she's always so ill (as in needing at least one sick day a fortnight) and she always has a nasty sounding cough. So if you smoke - stop! |

She was diagnosed with it in her 40s. Didn’t stop smoking until early 60s but the damage was done.

My dad has copd and like you, he still smokes. Rather a stupid choice in my opinion, considering that he’s also had 2 heart attacks as well as the copd.
Like you, he’s asked what will improve his breathing and the answer that came from medical professionals was quit smoking and take the inhalers as prescribed. To date, he’s done neither and sits there complaining that he can’t breathe!
I get that quitting smoking is difficult. I did it 11 years ago when there was not so much help around as there is now. Motivation is the key. For me, it was in my best interests to quit as I had already had 3 miscarriages by then and smoking wasn’t going to be doing my chances of having a successful pregnancy any good. You, like my dad, have the biggest motivation of all for quitting, it might actually save your life! |

Your go or consultant should be helping you quit, if not speak to your surgery. Vapes may not be suitable but there are tablets that will work. Also most health authorities run a free back to fitness type thing, starts you off slowly, again your surgery should have the info.
Walks are good, just try to speed them up and do it about 5 times a week, if you're sweating a little then you're burning fat! And water, drink plenty! If you want a fag reach for a glass of cold water first then take some deep deep slow breaths and imagine the craving leaving you....sounds bonkers but can help!

I don’t need to burn off any fat.... there’s nothing of me anyway! Haha
Just want to get a bit of fitness back, the smokes are gonna be hard to quit, but will get there with that one eventually |

They don't actually release stress, the craving causes it and the nicotine relieves it. After 48 hrs the physical cravings are gone. Then it's just psychological. Classes really help. |

I've been fag free now for just over a week. It's not been easy at all. I'm still craving them but I'm not giving in. I'm very proud of myself.
I'm using the champix tablets from the doctors, they have been very helpful.
No matter what you do it won't make a blind bit of difference until you give up the fags!!! Sorry to say it. After one week my breathing is so much better.
I took a brisk walk up hill yesterday and didn't get out of breath. Two weeks ago was a different story.
If you want to breathed better, give up the fags and take up swimming. Good luck |
