So I've got a couple of weeks annual leave booked next month and my original plans have changed so I'm not sure what on earth to do (16 days total). I've thought about booking a holiday and going away on my own but I'd have no idea where to go and a bit worried I'd regret it when I'm out there and feel a bit isolated. I've even toyed with the idea of just travelling around the UK meeting like minded fabbers haha. Anyone ever done anything like this before? All comments and ideas greatly appreciated. |

I went backpacking alone. Intimidating at first but I think because I did it alone I met people along the way that became great friends. You have to make more of an effort than in a group of friends. Go for it |

How hard is it to meet people? I've always thought about it but picture myself sort of walking up to someone and being like hi...... let's be friends lol. I dunno maybe it's just me and in reality it wouldn't be like that |

I agree with all the above - do it! I'm currently part way through 3 weeks in Ukraine on my own, or at least I came on my own but then met people in hostels. I've done it a few times now, it's great fun |

Wow if I met you lot whilst away on hols on my own I would definitely enjoy myself. See posts like this actually make me realise there's a lot more people doing the same thing. It's still very daunting tho |

I go on holiday most years alone. I've been to Prague, Krakow, Malta, Egypt and New York so far.
Next year for my birthday I'm spending 2 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia.
No one to annoy me, can do as much or as little as I please. |

Really easy in hostels. Even if you're a bit shy other people ask you to join them for drinks. I don't regret doing it at all. |

Siem Reap is obviously fantastic, but I found Cambodia really dirty. And not in a good way. It was when it dawned on me why all these 60 year old dudes were hanging around on benches that my distaste kicked in.
If you get the chance, check out Da Lat in Vietnam. Although with only two weeks, you'll be pressed to squeeze much in |

A lot of places to organised pub crawls. Get your name down and have a laugh. Go on jeep safaris and boat trips. There's loads of stuff you can do on your own but still have company x |

Why not do a trip based around an activity you enjoy?
I've been on several MTB/cycling holidays solo, organised by a holiday company.
Pick you & your bike up at the airport, you join a group for a week.
I've also done the interrail thing on my own but that got hard work. |

I do loads and loads of stuff on my own, I even upped and moved to a country where I couldnt speak the language on my own.
You'd be surprised how willing humans are to try make friends, all you have to do is put yourself out there.
I mean I have said hello to people, and 3 or 4 mins later gone on 15 mile walk with them.
The trick is, you have to be fine with going on the 15 mile walk on your own.
Just test it out now, get up, go out, go to the cinema on your own. You wont meet anyone that will join you, but make eye contact with people, keep your head up, smile, and know that at least youre gonna get a nice film.
Loads of people wont even go to the cinema on their own. |

I do it a fair bit.. Used to do airline lottery (turn up at the airport for the flight and grab a cheap seat)
Now you can find good deals on places like wowcher.
As for where you go, the world is your oyster...meeting people is just a case of going over and saying hello. Had some fun times on random weekend breaks

I do things on my own; really enjoy the cinema so have to go solo.
If travelling I’d go for the hostels to meet like minded travels. There’s some great solo traveller sites like much better adventure of flash pack.
What about booking something around an interest ? |

I was thinking about maybe going on lonely planet and seeing if there are any like minded people on there.
Just out of curiosity.... after seeing your profile pic, what's Leeds like in September? Haha x

I've contemplated it over the years, but what has put me off is people feeling sorry for me and taking me under their wing, just to realise I have actually ruined their holiday, that is my main fear |

Bristol East |
I booked a holiday for two to Sitjes first week in October.
Two seats on Easyjet Bristol-Barcelona return, and a week's self-catering flat.
That was a few weeks ago.
Just one of us going now.
We can swap notes.

Haha I kind of felt like that when I started off on my own but it's honestly not like that. You gravitate towards like minded people and end up making great friends. |

I'm swinging towards Spain or similar. Just dunno where too. Don't wanna get caught up too much in some clubbing scene if I'm on my own |

I travel solo with either of 2 adventure travel company’s. Small groups which contain solos, couples or friends. Always someone to chat to or have a meal with but your own company when you want it. Been on some fantastic trips, met some lovely people and had some great adventures |

I go away at least 4 times a year on my own and think its the most liberating thing anyone can do, you certainly learn a lot about yourself. Just do it |

I have also travelled all over the place on my own. Europe, far east and north America. As a male it is really easy to just pack a small bag and go. Hostels are great, but do your research first. Single bunk beds can be awkward, especially if you are in a mixed room and you have to go to the toilet in the morning (you know what I mean). In many places if you are eating alone the restaurant will sit singles together. I have had some lovely impromptu dinner dates that way.
If you are going hostelling, don't take anything you care about being nicked. Just make sure you keep your phone/wallet and passport safe. Always take a couple of good padlocks for your stuff.
Today's tech makes things so easy. Get some web accounts set up for booking/uber/skyscanner/car rental. You can book for anywhere in minutes now.
Go for it |

I go cruising on my own. Going to Jordan, Oman and Abu Dhabi in September and down the Amazon in January. I love it. Went to India last year and down the Panama Canal before that. About a third of the passengers on cruises are solo. |
