So the September issue of the big women's mags had decided to put black women on the cover- apparently a landmark event?

Or just a gimmick to create a media "event" to increase sales?

What do you think?

It’s about time.

I don’t think it’s a gimmick, I hope not.

Hardly a new thing... sure Naomi Campbell has been on the cover of Vogue on more than one occasion.

I can't believe i've never seen a black woman on the front of a magazine before.

If they thought about it instead of just doing it then it's pretty political and using the woman for no other reason than the colour of her skin.

I'll have to look it up before i decide what I think.

Just put her on there without the fanfare.

It’s not just any edition. It’s the first time for a black woman on the September edition. Which apparently is the most important edition of the year. Who knew!

The new(ish) editor is keen to promote inclusion so think it's more an expression of his intentions rather than a gimmick. He also features plus size models, shock horror!

Please..... I really am laughing. What a gem of information, a real nugget. Seriously, I would love to be a fly on the wall or the tea lady at Vogue style meeting....... They must exist on another planet.

Everyone should do a September Profile Pic so we can be en vogue!

I think it's an incredibly positive step in the right direction - I don't think it's being done to reflect sales but more to show Vogue's progression, with it's current editor, as an inclusive magazine showing the diversity of the population (obviously keeping with 'beautiful' people).

There were loads of black women on the mags but I hand't understood the relevance of the 'keyword' September! How behind the times am I ?

I'm off to have my pic taken for the September issue of Granny's that use the hoover. Apparently it's never been done before ....

It’s a gimmick

Conde Naste revenue is dropping, nobody buys magazines anymore and this is a way to boost sales in their flagship

You may scoff, but this strategy means that they get 12 chances per colour to create free advertising for vague magazine then they can do 12 of each colour for fat chicks... marketing genius

Okay, so the first black woman on the cover of Vogue was Beverley Johnson in 1974. So this story is baloney.

The fact this is an issue and is being talked about as a "first" in 2018 highlights sadly how far behind white people we still are. Next year no doubt it'll be a transgender model to be the "first".

This subject has been discussed for the last month, and though it's great to see, as educated and talented black people we don't want special treatment, just inclusion in a chosen field.

It's a big deal. A bloody big deal.

I'd like to expand on this, but it will take a bloody long time to tap out my reasons on this crappy mobile phone.

I'll be back to explain...

It's significant as said before it's September issue. Also Beyonce Knowles will have full editorial control of this issue. So important for them to hand over the reins. Positive female role model, positive black woman, positive example of inclusiveness.

It shouldn't need highlighting as something special. We are all people. There shouldn't be praise for featuring black, gay, trans, fat, whatever, models. It should all be normal and not an 'event'.

I know why they publicise it, I just wish we were at the point that they didn't need to.

Yes, but it's not about whether she's a good role model, it's about a black lady on the cover of a September issue of Vogue.

Is the September issue only of special importance in the UK? As far as I can make out, Naomi has featured on the cover of September issues of Vogue worldwide (including European countries) 7ish times.

I'm not a reader of Vogue so didn't realise they'd had a transgender on their September issue.

Sadly we are still celebrating "the first" in this day and age. The first woman to do this...the youngest person to do that...disabled person to run in "normal" race etc. We still have a long way to go.

what deems sexy? Sexy is subjective, i actually know a woman, yes she happens to be black, not that it matters, she isnt "attractive" in the conventional sense, in fact people have been cruel to her in the past but she has a huge heart, a genuine smile and good banter, therefore i find her very sexy

The media WANT it to make a difference so they can sell the shit as something unique, nobody outside politics and media actually gives a damn what colour you are, it's who you are that counts.
