Finally we've had a decent bit of rain and i can start to burn all these massive piles of cuttings that have built up over the last few months.

Why do you need rain to burn cuttings, or am I missing something?

"Why do you need rain to burn cuttings, or am I missing something? "

Sparks from a bonfire can ignite tinder dry surroundings.

"Will it be really smokey?"

Burning this morning, the stuff's so dry it went up like a torch with very little smoke.

"Will it be really smokey?

I get nervous when I start a charcoal bbq off due to the smoke.

Worried the neighbours might say something and I'll have to start WW3 with them. So far so good though

There is no law restricting the burning of garden waste in gardens provided it is done infrequently and the smoke doesn't cause a nuisance. If there is cause for complaint the local authority can serve an abatement notice under the Environmental Protection Act (1990) though this is rare. The same goes for barbeques.

A little common sense is all that is needed. For example i won't burn if neighbours have their washing out or lots of windows open, nor will i burn anything that will give off noxious smoke, eg plastic and the fire is always attended.

I haven't had any complaints so far.

You can't compost everything.

I hope the rain here in north wales went some way to damping down the fires on the Horseshoe Pass

"I hope the rain here in north wales went some way to damping down the fires on the Horseshoe Pass"

This kind of thing is always a worry for me when having a bonfire. This is why i've held off until now.

I know of a local guy who had one too close to a hedge, the hedge caught and he had to be rushed to hospital after he tried to put it out. A little common sense goes a long way.

A significantly lengthy hose can quell that
