I have witnessed blatant sexism, racism and homophobia.

A discussion about people's favourite serial killer

Oh, and two people who thought it ' funny' to joke about animal cruelty.

I am not easily offended. I havent led a sheltered life.

But today, I am disgusted

Unfortunately Fab has a wide cross section of people and posters, just like the real world.

However in the real world we don't see everything that's out there.

I think avoiding threads you don't like is the best strategy.

It's often a futile gesture trying to get people to see reason or logic.

I've found challenging things I disagree intently with changes nothing and just frustrates me more.

I'm here to be happy, not permanently distressed at narrow minded or bigoted opinions.

Perhaps ignoring certain subjects appears to make them acceptable. I sincerely hope not.

I presumed the ‘killer’ thread was about fictional ones ... think people liking various actual murderers was a tad strange , however real life crimes fascinate people. There’s a line between the psychology and liking their crime

It gets tiring and a waste of time when those who hold particular views create certain threads and try to provoke certain reactions to respond to all of them.

I’ve been on the receiving end and so have those who have been on my veri’s and friends list of a particular kind of abuse. I’ve got a thick skin anyway and nothing really affects me on here. But, if they were to see my face picture now, oh gawwwwd. They’ll have a field day

The term ‘keyboard warrior’ comes to mind.

No one is saying you can’t challenge it, if you feel better for doing so then crack on.

I heeded the advice I was given a few years ago about stepping away when it becomes not enjoyable. Of course I’m still in the thick of it giving my twopence worth but I will never alllow myself to become emotionally involved like I was back then, all over a thread I found completely distasteful and upsetting.

I agree about most but I do have a weird fascination with serial killers. It’s their mind that I’m interested in and love documentaries. Obviously I don’t agree with what they do, it’s what drives someone to do the things they do. The other topics were an eye opener and not right.

It just alarms me that so few challenge the cunty behaviour

Have we really become such a nation of spineless sheep, that we just say " Oh, I just ignore?""

You're right, cunts will always be cunts. Trouble is, they frequently can't see their own cuntiness, they're not reasonable rational people, not inwardly facing.

Add in that one persons cuntiness is another persons perfectly reasonable behaviour, the whole thing really does become futile and frustrating.

You simply cannot change some people or their opinions.

There's enough of that type of behaviour in the real world. I come here to escape that shit.

He was a bit angry to be honest. I’ve been ghosted after many many dates. I think it was a little scary that his reaction was the way it was and to put it on a forum. I read it early on and walked away.

There and to the left a bit

I can see both sides here to be honest - just accepting and ignoring isn't the way to go otherwise it lets people say what they want regardless of how vile they are - sometimes you have to take a stance and challenge opinions that fly against your own, or information you think is misleading.

That is after all what an open forum is for - to discuss, challenge and voice opinion.

That said - there are times that you can only take it so far before realising that you may as well bang your head against a brick wall rather than carry on trying to show someone just how wrong they are in what they are saying. It's times like those, which sadly are becoming all the more frequent on here where you sometimes just need to walk away and resort to the report button and deal with it that way.

That's not what I'm saying at all Sappster and you know I'm all for challenging bad and vile behaviour whether that be on the forums or elsewhere in life - per my opening paragraph.

In fact I'll often do so on here till I'm blue in the face - and way beyond what most people will.

All I'm saying is that sometimes you have to choose your weapons and if one doesn't work e.g. challenging directly - choose a different one e.g. reporting

"I can see both sides here to be honest - just accepting and ignoring isn't the way to go otherwise it lets people say what they want regardless of how vile they are - sometimes you have to take a stance and challenge opinions that fly against your own, or information you think is misleading.

Why? Why are these times becoming more frequent?

Because we accept the vileness.

Even feed it sometimes.

Because we can do nothing?

Lucky the anti slavery campaigners didnt say that, aint it?

That's not what I'm saying at all Sappster and you know I'm all for challenging bad and vile behaviour whether that be on the forums or elsewhere in life - per my opening paragraph.

In fact I'll often do so on here till I'm blue in the face - and way beyond what most people will.

All I'm saying is that sometimes you have to choose your weapons and if one doesn't work e.g. challenging directly - choose a different one e.g. reporting "

If we all refuse to bite. If we all refuse to interact in their games. If we all refuse to be party to the hate the route the hurt the bullying...

And I go back to my earlier reply to you, I do challenge people and so do others, that can take the form of calling them out on the forums or by contacting Admin & reporting them. Just because you might not see this don’t think it doesn’t happen, we don’t all need to shout the loudest to be heard.

Lib has made a lot of sense on this thread, this site is modified but people can “recreate” themselves very quickly I think we’ve possibly seen the same shite / trolls over the years...

I don’t know who you are talking about whether it’s specific posters or not.

The mods can get the threads back on track the other way is to not bite and self moderate to a degree by steering the thread back on track with a post reminder of what the discussion is about.

Where do you draw the line though, some of it is subjective. The others day a thread was hijacked by two people having banter, it was suggested they get a room but they still carried on - I couldn’t be arsed to scroll through and carry on reading, for others it could have been “entertaining” they weren’t being rude just boring to read..

They were specific posters yesterday, who spoilt a very good and informative thread and upset a lot of us with their posts. Thanks to the mods the posts were removed, so we could eventually get on with the thread. Attention seeking will always be rife on here, but getting it by disgusting comments, is not the way to go.

I do wonder if a thread that condemns the tone and subject of another thread simply gives it oxygen it wouldn't otherwise have.

How many times have we totally missed contentious threads and only become aware of them due to a condemnation thread?

Someone starts a thread bemoaning other distasteful threads. How many people reply "I've not seen that......."

Deprive a fire of oxygen and it goes out.

I heartily agree with reporting threads on certain topics. However if the thread doesn't break any rules it stays open.

Just because we find a thread topic distasteful doesn't mean it must be closed...... Just means ignore it.

A lot of times these threads. The contentious ones are started to drag people into an argument or slagging match while those who are passionate about some of the content become very angry. Threads about religion. Animal cruelty etc are going to rise a lot of people and it’s those the incite and fuel the fire who should be removed and not those who defend it Yes it’s a public forum but had no one got balls these days to stand up to the arseholes who continuously incite others to rage

A friend of mine has been offered a holiday she can't refuse.

So she's sat on the step in her garden watching the world go by and counting butterflies. She can be a bit "sappy" at times, but she stands up for kids and animals and the weak and those who being mistreated by others. I sent her a postcard. Maybe you might like to do the same.

I'll miss her and her sanity humanity and the fact she stands up and says what so many on this thread seem to agree with about how the forums have been recently such a place of "banter". The sort of banter that causes hurt pain strife and all the negativity that pervades the forum in recent times...

I for one hope it changes soon. Maybe then we will see more fun on the forums again and fewer people leaving.

Where is the ?

"A friend of mine has been offered a holiday she can't refuse.

What did I miss? I'm guessing it's just a reaction to the usual freaks and weirdos this site attracts. I've been on here off and on for several years and find the forums today to be quite polite and uneventful compared to how they were before they separated politics off

Yes there are some wallies on here, some vindictive judgemental people with agendas, and some egos... and some of them are even on this thread bemoaning everything. But that's just what you get with a public forum. The key thing is to learn tolerance of others who aren't like you and, if they're pissing you off, how to walk away, and if they're trolling you... when to draw the line and threaten to report them.

As for people who act complete arses and are deliberately aggressive and abusive in order to try and be funny or whatever... I could name one such character who is thankfully no longer on here who was exactly this but I'd be lambasted because everyone, for some reason I never got, thought the sun shined out of his arse. Thankfully I don't see that kind of extreme "I'm going to be a total aggressive dick and then my girlie fan base will run to defend me" happening so much these days on here. People get called out more when they are being a dick or they get ignored. So imo it's not as bad as it was

I haven't been on the lounge for a long time for this very reason. I used to pop over here for the interesting topics but was getting too riled up by intentionally controversial comments designed to ignite an argument. It was ruining my enjoyment of the site so I avoided it but I do miss the genuinely interesting threads.

It's like the day I realised my bio was full of negativity in order to deter people who didn't read it anyway and was now saying something about me as it was my bio but was full of negatives about people's behaviour on here.

How do you retain your humanity in good conscience without letting the intentional destroyers influence you? We are feeding into their behaviour as the majority are intentionally posting vile stuff to rile people up so this isn't a case of ignorance I believe.

Really valid points here reading through this thread but what did jump out at me was the sentence

There and to the left a bit

There are several contentious threads around today - the type I'd normally be in the thick of, voicing opinion, countering others and challenging views I disagree with - but I really can't be arsed with it - I'll be back to fight another day, but for now it's fun and light-heartedness I'm after.

The threads the OP is referring to are vile, aren't necessary, and yes a lot of the time are deliberately contentious and designed to provoke and be controversial and they should be rightly condemned and challenged but sometimes you need to take a step back and a deep breath and relax.

And today is one of those days

WHAAAAAAT?! This is what I missed yesterday! I caught all the other crap but honestly, I don’t let myself get worked up anymore. I hold views that others take issue with and others hold views I take issue with. It’s a level of dickishness that is inherent to the internet. Plus, I genuinely think one of them hates me anyway, just for being me, so I couldn’t care less what he thinks.

Meanwhile, I need to go say congratcholayshuns to seeside

This is just a further example of the gradual but sadly incessant eroding of what is acceptable behaviour in public which can now mean on Social Media, Basefook, Twatter and apparently now on Fabs.

All this wonderful technology we now enjoy sadly seems to have brought most things down to the lowest common denominator

With many posters on this Thread apparently offended does this indicate Moderators need to up their game?

I don't envy the Mods their job at all - they're volunteers who give their time freely and willingly for the benefit of the site, and they can't be expected to be all over every thread and provide a 24/7 presence, so I do think an element of self-policing is necessary and that some people really should think before posting some of their comments, or dropping "hand grenade" threads which they know will be contentious, only to run away and come back to them later and decide which side to take (which is a common tactic for some).

I do think it's right to stand up and challenge vile or abusive behaviour, or stand up for what we believe in rather than just accept it because "it's the internet what do you expect" - just sometimes that doesn't work and you have to look for an alternate route which in this case would be reporting the thread/post.

I do think there needs to be a level of consistency all round though, some users appear to be able to post what they want and get away with it, while others are censured for far less - but that's not a criticism as such, more an observation caveated by what I started off by saying about the role of a mod not being an enviable one.

You touch on another phenomena that has now become a way of life and that is to stand and film violence, accidents, disasters etc rather than step in and help the victims.

last year I saw a bloke hitting a woman so I stepped in and challenged him. He took a swing, ended up on his arse and left. The woman was in a bad way so I called the ambulance and police. It was then I noticed small crowd of about 20 people had gathered. 17 were filming having done nothing to help

I just looked at them and shouted 'What the F**K?'
