Stan Collymore has written about depression on Twitter and it appears that Gary Speed was a sufferer also, which may explain why he took his own life, if indeed that's what has happened.

RIP Gary, from a true fan of football.

That is an absolute shocker. Just read it on another forum and really couldn't believe it. It's tragic. It was only Wednesday he was in Belgium discussing the fixtures for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and saying how happy he was with how it went and how they were looking to build on their change in form.

Terrible news. Really out of the blue and very upsetting.

Newcastle and Gateshead

I have been in pubs all afternoon in newcastle and have the say that people are absolutely stunned by the news... to see shay given crying brought it home to everyone here....

when i was playing football and wanted to be a midfielder he was one of the people that you looked up to... not the flashiest player but was great at what he did.....

and to think he was only on football focus yesterday...

he was taking wales in the right direction and sure he would have gotten them to the finals of a major tournament

RIP Gary.....

Newcastle and Gateshead

I have been debating for the last 2 hrs whether to tell you my Gary Speed Story... and I decided to because it shows what a nice guy he was...

when I was a lot younger and living in east london, I use to go out to a very posh/club venue in Essex.. and I went there with a lovely women...

there that weekend were the welsh football team and this one guy took a fancy to her she just giggled it off.. so when she told him her bloke was over there I waved.... he come over to me, apologised for trying to tap her up, bought me a drink, chatted about football and gave me his autograph

It was Gary Speed....

so when I come up to newcastle I saw him in a club... I knew some of the footballers there so we got introduced, to which i cheekily said "we've already met!" and recounted the story to him.. and he remembered it! (I don't think he got shot down very often.. all the women i knew fancied the arse off him)

He was such a good bloke to know.... and I am honoured to have spent some time in his company...

there are not many times when the word "nice" just sums up a person.. but in this case I don't think you will hear one bad word said about him.......

The land of grey peas and bacon

Most suicidal people are not psychotic or insane. They must be upset, grief-stricken, depressed or despairing, but extreme distress and emotional pain are not necessarily signs of mental illness.

That is just my intreputation of suicide..

You don't have to be depressed to commit suicide... Some don't suffer with mental illness..

He was on Football Focus yesterday and the show's host said he was in good spirits, talking about Wales and their chances, and that he seemed quite upbeat.

To hang oneself the very next day suggests extreme mood swings and that points to depression. Read Collymore's diary on Twitter and you'll see just how quickly sufferers of depression go from euphoria to total despair in a matter of hours.

A depessive illness is one of the worst conditions that can afflict a human being. I have councelled those who would swap the condition for cancer or some other illness. We are on a site where we deal in pleasure which is driven by the soul. Poor Gary lost sight of his being for what may have been a few minutes or hours. So sad when this happens.

Not sure that this is the place to be debating this, but this is right. An awful lot of people kill themselves as an over-reaction to a situation (end of a relationship, losing a job etc), plenty more kill themselves out of fear (something illegal catching up with them, being outed etc) and some kill themselves because of mental health issues. The assumption that he must have been depressed is a natural but unfounded one. That said, I think depression rates in retired sportspeople are surprisingly high.

Regardless, RIP.

All untimely deaths are a tragedy - a sailor and a soldier lost today, as well. But for someone so young and full of promise to feel the need to take their own life is a double tragedy.

RIP Gary Speed, a fantastic role model in his life, much loved and respected by Leeds United fans and the world.
