Of course the, inevitable, up-tick in gun relate deaths and injuries, will be shown to be totally unrelated...

I find the whole thing baffling. I saw pictures of these guns on the news this morning, they look extraordinarily inaccurate and only appear to hold one bullet, and are the size of a fucking shoebox. 3D printers are incredibly expensive, as, I'm led to believe, is the "printing" material. In America you can, completely legally, buy a precision engineered, accurate, effective, reliable, small, compact and easily concealed gun that holds a dozen bullets for a couple of hundred bob. I don't get why people are fretting about 3D printed guns when actual real-life guns are so readily available in the supermarket.

Isn't the problem that they are untraceable and undetectable.

Are 3D guns being developed elsewhere?

"Isn't the problem that they are untraceable and undetectable."

Airport scanners have bullets coded into their detection software, the gun shape will also show up so whilst they may not give off a large magnetic signal they are still easy to detect unless there’s no bullets being carried or the gun is in pieces with no bullets

I guess so. But if you're in the market for an untraceable gun, it's reasonably easy to get one here in the UK, I imagine it must be easier still in the states. As for being undetectable, a metal detector may not pick it up (although it would detect the bullet, and a gun is pretty useless without ammunition) but you'd notice someone trying to hide a gun the size of a housebrick about their person, surely?

Fair shout. All the fuss at the moment is centred around America though, which is the topic at hand.

Exactly. What is the UK's obsession with what goes on in in the USA? Do we have the same obsession with cartels murdering people in South America?

Plenty of other countries brandishing firearms, and the UK is allowing plenty of questionable activities!

Do I tbink it's a good idea? No. But not my circus not my monkey.

I've read that ballistics experts can't trace a bullet back to a 3D gun as there is no rifling (finger print )

Because they're supposed to be out closest political and military ally I suppose.

Why all the anger though? We're discussing current affairs, not organising a revolution. Chill your beans.

Interesting point, that hadn't occurred to me. The lack of rifling would also make them hopelessly inaccurate though, unless you're up close and personal. In which case you may just as well nick yer mam's breadknife out of the drawer!

Calm down. There's no anger, if you're capable of reading the content of my comment, I'm questioning why we feel the need to be so judgemental of the USA and it's choices.

If you've frequented the states you'll realise that whilst we share the English as "almost" the primary language , we also have massive cultural differences.

I think they are seen as a disposable one shot one kill untraceable weapon at present .Of course this just the beginning of the technology .More accurate versions will be along very shortly .Also the cost will drop significantly over time.

I would argue that 3D guns are relevant to us here in the UK. As it makes a gun downloadable .Added to the fact that the printing technology is dropping in price My daughters school has a 3D printer .In the future most homes will have one.So to debate the US reaction to the tech is relevant to the UK.

As above, they're our closest political and military allies. And I have visited the states on a number of occasions and honestly I don't see the cultural differences as massive at all. No more than, say, the cultural differences between a cornishman and a Geordie. Besides, we have an enormous cultural overlap. McDonald's, Burger King, Nike, Ford, Levis, barbecues, Jack Daniels, The Backstreet Boys, Taylor Swift, rap music, Hollywood movies, NBC, CNN, Fox, The Simpsons, Miami Vice, American Gothic, Lady Gaga, Mike Tyson, that cyclist with the missing bollock, The US Open, Nestle own Cadburys, Wal-Mart own Asda, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Apple.... like it or not, our cultures are intertwined.

Besides, as above, we're discussing current events. What difference does it make where there those events unfolded?

I agree, while I stand by my assertion that it seems utterly pointless in America, it does have the potential to easily put guns in the hands of people in countries that don't have such easy access to firearms.

On the other hand, if you or I were to download and 3d print these weapons, we'd still need to obtain bullets for them. We can't just walk into a drugstore and buy a box of twinkies, 20 fags, and a box of 500 .22 rounds. We'd have to obtain them illegally, and if you find someone that can sell you a load of bullets, the chances are you've found someone that can sell you a gun. So it's still negligible as to whether one of these plastic guns is really that much more convenient
