Here's a question I want to ask.
If you were on a morning shift for 5 hours and did 4 hours of the shift without a break, would you still ask for a break or would you ask to go home an hour early instead? |

Come home early, it’s only 5 hours. |

Technically yes, but would really depend on the work situation. Lot's of people don't take breaks and eat/drink at their desks nowadays. |

Come home early, it’s only 5 hours. "
I was thinking the same as it would be pointless going on a break after 4 hours and then come back to finish the last bit of the shift |

According to the GOV.UK site, if you're over 18 you're only entitled to a break if you're working six hours+ and a break should be taken in the middle of the shift and not at the start or the end.
It's only five bloody hours. |

Funny how in my job, I can get a break if my shift is over 4 hours |

This is why it seems that you suggested an hour break after four hours . |

How? I do high intensity (in context, serving 100+ breakfasts in a three hour period) five hour shifts and I don't get a break. |

Good point. I think I should have put "would you still ask for a break and then come back for to finish the last bit of your shift" in the question to avoid confusion |

I think I would take a break after two and a half hours then finish my shift .
If I just went home after four hours I would no doubt leave my post unmanned and I would expect to be sacked .
If I didn’t get a break four hours into my shift , I’d ask my boss if I could carry on and finish 15 minutes early . |

The breaks you are entitled to all depends on your contact with the company but the minimum by law is a 20 minute break if you work 6+ hours.
My company gives you a break if you work 4 1/2 hours.
I wouldn't ask to go home early because I didn't get my break - I always make sure I get my breaks! |

Why didn’t you get your break today? Is your break your responsibility to fit in? Is it allocated to you? Is it that you’re short staffed at the moment for one reason or another? Does it happen all the the time or is this a one off occasion that’s no big deal and like so many other people you’ve just worked a little bit more and you can shrug it off. Let’s face it 5 hours as an assistant at the cinema is not 10hours sweating it in surgery mate.

A break would be nice! Officially I'm supposed to get an hour for lunch but I rarely get to have it without my phone ringing constantly or someone hovering around my desk wanting me to sort something there and then |

Some jobs are process driven, so breaks are taken as an "when convenient" ie, working with fibreglass, you don't stop when you are wetting out, applying resin, you start and can't stop or the job is ruined. Plumbing, painting and a whole host of jobs demand that you plan ahead to make breaks work into the tasks ahead. |

Officially my break times are 10 am - 15 minutes, 12:30 - 30 minutes, That's working 8 - 4:30,
Depending where I'm working sometimes I work through one of my breaks and sometimes I take two 30 minute breaks, It changes all the time |
