You really need to tell people a budget to get some better advice.

I think the majority of laptops these days are only used for about 5-10% of what they are capable of.

Modern hi spec Games might stretch a basic one if that's really what you're into

As an IT professional, my experience is that many people buy a laptop when they would really be better off with a desktop.

If you actually need a laptop, my first question would be what sort of battery life you need? The technology available for performance is power hungry.

I’m needing a fast laptop, current laptops got bout 8gb of data wich I need to keep available. I don’t always have access to the net with my work.

Work wise I do a lot of excel and word docs. Always on outlook. Usually browser word excel all working at same time.

Personally would also like ability for a wee game, streaming tv, cam etc. A decent battery would be good but I generally use mains power wen available. Do t know if that helps. Anything up to 5 or 600 if possible but maybe go higher if needed. What do u think

Right.. firstly the 8gb is "working memory" not storage. You will expect to have at least 500gb of storage. You definitely should ask for SSD storage, this is much quicker than a traditional hard disk.

If you need fast, then look for Intel i5 or even better i7 processor. On the spec the processor will have a number like i7-6450 the first number after the i5 or i7 bit indicates the generation of processor, so the 6450 would be 6th generation the latest is now 8th gen so look for numbers starting with an 8...

Next thing is graphics. Look for mention of Nvidia GTX or AMD RX series graphics if you want to play graphics intensive games... otherwise you will struggle.

My Dell is around 6 years old, has 8gb ram and an i7. I copied the operating system to a samsung evo hard drive that runs very cool, helped with a laptop cooler. The desktop loads in 15 seconds if I am counting and programs are on in 2-3. Battery life could be better but streaming depends on your wireless connector, office really isn't that intensive a programme, a decent disk drive helps a lot

To say, this cost me £400 including the HDD swap. Can't say I like HP that much, their trackpads are terrible and connectivity seem to lack a lot compared.

At the very least, look for a device that advertises itself as a Gaming Laptop.

I would expect to play over £1000 for a serious gaming laptop. If the gaming is less important, then you can get by with a lesser machine.

As for brands, the big brands are usually a bit more expensive but more robust. Some of the former "budget brands" like Asus, MSI and Acer are really good now. Something like the Acer Nitro series would be a decent option in you price range.

I would go Asus. Asus laptops are the best. My last 5 laptops have been Asus, never disappointed.

Work for a company who get hundreds of laptops daily, dell, hp, Toshiba, Lenovo are built for cheap parts. And a large quantity do go faulty, dell usually screens, hp is touchpad.

Generally, the cheaper devices are made to a budget. More expensive laptops will have a better build quality. Pro series laptops will always be more robust than home device.

There is a site called cpuboss that compares the cpu's. If you are stuck on a few different laptops, it'll effectively tell you which machine is; more powerful, newer, more efficient, have better inbuilt graphics etc if you can be bothered looking into it. The rest is down to connectivity.
