Proper long shot here... looking for any recommendations of rare or underground records of the above genres. I'm a beat digger and after looking through some of the gems recommended on similar threads I thought I'd give it a go. Any old school soul brother's or sisters out there? Funkier the better! Thanks in advance!

I love my funk and rare groove. I use too DJ in Birmingham and had several night where I played to a lot of the student crowd long before Craig Charles started.

Aww quality! Maybe get back into it... I love anything like that! Know my jazz and blues and thought I knew disco but after visiting a few vinyl shops I've realised I know nothing. Been buying loads of kool and the gang, Isley brothers, get the benson etc because their less famous tunes are ace!

I actually know labi siffre from his ' I got the...' tune... shamefully I only know it cuz dr dre sampled it for: My name is by Eminem. Brilliant recommendation though! Exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for! Haven't heard much booker T so will make sure I check him out. Thanks again!

‘It must be love’ was Labi’s song originally and then covered by Madness.

No way! I knew they did a lot of covers but loving the labi original. Got a ukalale at the start.

Love stuff like this! Like heard Keith Richards wrote purple haze but his gf stole it and gave it to jimi Hendrix. After Keith heard what Joni did with it he was let him have it as his own. Think bob Dillon said the same with all along the watchtower

One of the best threads in ages but a tricky one to respond to.

Do you mean serious collector rare or rare because people no longer listen to it? It also depends on how back in the stack you want to get?

Massive fan of those genres. Could ramble on forever about the them.

For a soul track with a touch of jazz in the great vocals and arrangements, try Kathleen Emery’s version of Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child

It also has the most incredible drumming. 1968, I think.

Been collecting/crate-digging for many years. Happy to send longer lists/mixes to people.

First thanks for the songs, really like the blackbyrds and jimmy bo horne tunes!

I'm not looking for serious collector rare because I don't want to be paying loads for records. More rare as in people don't listen to it any more. Or maybe a few b sides to popular songs from popular artists. Even though I love the music, I primarily want vinyl for sampling. So at times I pay a lot of money for a 10 second vocal etc.

I know my music but when it comes to 60s - 80s music I'm not the most knowledgable because I wasn't born so trying to play catch up.

Thanks again

The drums are extraordinary - glad you liked it. I don’t think it’s even sure who it is.

If anyone ever asks me what a tune is I always tell them - I’ve been grateful to others for doing that. Hate it when people are sniffy about doing that.

Discogs is great, costs me a fortune though!

Facebook group's are better for finding music imho. Mixesdb is useful for finding track lists for radio shows/dj mixes

My kind of music. I can’t help with suggestions.

I’m more commercially minded. I tend to get my vibes from radio shows or club nights and more often than not I know the song but not a clue who sings it but damn I can dance to it. I’m off to Funk and Soul club tonight. You can say what you want about Craigy boy but he knows how to make me dance all night. He plays some absolute corkers.

There and to the left a bit

Actually following on from my earlier post about old school ska - there are some great current ska bands around - try any of the following on YouTube etc

The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra (a side project for the sax player out of Madness)

The Simmertones - a good mix of covers and originals - their ska versions of The Doctor Who theme tune and Doris Day's Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps are divine.

I'll leave you though with this:

Soul Growl - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

Only know Millie Manders from the worm she has done with a charity project I help out with occasionally that releases albums of covers by unsigned bands of a different artist each year - it's ska based so has seen The Specials, The Beat, Madness, Bob Marley and a few others done over the years - this year they're doing Trojan

I have to say once again a great thread with good topic, and people kicking back and being nice and helpful.

Respect for collecting vinyl.

Musically I like everything that has good harmonies and rhythm. For the purposes of this conversation everything from Louis's Hot 5 via Bix, to the crooners, to straight ahead to Big Band, to bebop to afrobop, jazz rock and jazz funk to smooth and back to Jazz Roots.

To give information some of the big bands jumped on the funk thing so if you like your funk jazzy check out some of Buddy Rich's work or this one from Woody Herman

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zEDN9ZfmfDo

A disco favourite from my older brother and still a rare groove favourite from Mr Manu Dibango and the court held MJ had not copied it!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EF92yOsv3Y8

A well known band but not many listen to their earlier work the Commodore get nasty!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bLr5cL0eG2w

I am away from home for a bit but will think of some funky soul later, but here is courtesy of Mr Tarantino The Coasters "Down Mexico Way"

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kahp_kmOFzQ

A mention of Joe Battaan requires the soulful "Ordinary Guy" a song that still resonates and is a great summer song!

Ten Commandments - Prince Buster

Another great tune! Right going to get the ring! That's if you can forgive the Bob DYLAN mistake

I love a bit of Ska and having a good old skank. Reminds me of being a kid and my mom banging out the ska on vinyl. Great tune though. Definitely on the listen lists with a few other Prince Buster tunes

I love Stax, especially Isaac Hayes. One of my favourite record covers is him bald headed in a gold vest. Despite Shaft I always think of him singing ballads.

But here he is in funky mode

Second tune is nice. Gonna have to take a loan out with all these songs I'm gonna be buying
