""Hollywood stars have been criticised for taking roles away from transgender or disabled actors. Should minorities on-screen only be represented by minority actors? Last week, Scarlett Johansson stepped down from a her role as a transgender man following a backlash from the LGBT community. A few days later, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was branded hypocritical for calling for more disabled actors on-screen while also taking on the lead role of Will Sawyer - an FBI agent with a prosthetic leg - in his new film Skyscraper. In this sensitised climate, the traditional belief that acting is founded on portraying someone you're not, is being denounced to the point of toxicity." www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-44852182 Is it offensive for actors to portray trans, disabled, gay, etc people when they aren't these things? Or is that the whole point of acting?" I think if the actor does his homework and engages with those he's portraying then it's fine ... Dustin Hoffman in Rainman was excellent

"If there weren't enough disabled actors then I can see why they may want to just non disabled, but there are many disabled actors so there's no excuse." One comment was that the big name stars draw people to the film and an unknown disabled actor wouldn't. Although a disabled actor won't ever become a big name if they're never allowed to act.

"I don't think it's offensive, however it does take away an opportunity for someone who is probably more appropriate for the role. I think it's more about the box office appeal of a star than being disrespectful to other actors, and I doubt if that will change in a hurry." How would you feel about about a white actor blacking up?

"Hang on Hollywood has been letting gay men act as heterosexual for decades.. #RockHudsonbrokemymumsheart. So If they didn't take these roles it would smack of hypocrisy, also has anyone watched Clarissa in Silent Witless no Bafta dropping through that letterbox anytime soon.... " Good point. There's more openly gay actors in soaps now playing gay roles.

" I take the point, but it's for entertainment purposes, not necessarily to share the solely exclusive experiences of that actor? Where do you draw the line? Tell gay/lesbian/trans people they're not allowed to act in any other role other than that?" You could probably say that about every single acting role. Unless the role was playing an actor.

" But it's not just about presence. It's about the roles. Loads of black actors played "black" roles of being savages or slaves or house help or voodoo witchdoctors or criminals. But really such roles may well have been played by blacked up white actors for all the implicit racism in them. Thankfully now we have tremendous black actors playing more neutral roles about lawyers etc. In a similar way surely the better breakthrough isn't to use trans or disabled people to play those roles. But to play other roles. On this lines there was a Peter Dinkage film I watched recently that, if I recall correctly, made absolutely nothing of him being a dwarf. He simply played the lead role, as if that was totally to be expected. That's progress imo

"Big" names put me off paying to watch a film, if the film was based on struggles with being disabled/trans/gay etc, I would much rather watch someone who has actually lived through those struggles and bring that experience to the role *who can act as well*, rather than someone who is there because people know who they are.

"I don't find it offensive or inappropriate per se. I mean the film or tv programme itself might be, but not because of who plays the role. Would a tg actor enjoy being told that they are only allowed to portray tg characters? Acting is acting, a good actor will portray a well-written character convincingly regardless of how close to their own life it is. There's an issue with tg and some other minorities being underrepresented in film and television, but I don't think that laying down rules about who can play what roles is really the way forward. On a similar theme, what if only tg were allowed to write tg-related storylines and screenplay? Perhaps only women should be allowed to write screenplay involving women, nobody should be allowed to write about or act any part or issue unless they have direct personal experience of it. And so on and so on. " I agree with this.

As with any other job in the land, that able bodied people apply for, there are times when employers will take on an employee because they're a family friend or whatever other reason. The choice isn't about positive discrimination as so beloved by the PC brigade and as pushed by the minority brigade when they see a job opportunity they can make exclusively their own. The choice should simply be of all the possibilities a) who is the better actor and b) who will also bring in the bums on seats. Unless of course you'd like to underwrite the studios for any loss sustained if they go all PC?

"But more 'appropriate' could mean a better skilled actor... And a person that actually had lost a leg AND was an actor? " You're over-reacting, looking to be offended. Nobody was offended by Kenneth More portraying Douglas Bader (who was alive and very fit and well at the time) in Fight for the Sky (based on the book Reach for the Sky). For the uninformed out there :Group Captain Douglas Bader CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, DL, FRAeS was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. Lost both legs just prior to the war in an aircrash. Flew Spitfires and Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain.

I don't think many of the responses here are about you or (if you're using the royal "we") any broader minority group. Most people are reacting against the notion of positive discrimination. Women have long argued against being hired purely because they're a woman. I think most people can intuitively sense how this principle applies across the board. Having said that, however, I do think that some people can be naive to the fact that discrimination is taking place in this world of ours. When I was a kid I was taken to a performance of Othello with a black actor. Apparently it was a big deal. I found it a bit bizarre that it wasn't the norm. Crazy

"The whole point of being an actor is to pretend to be something you are not. People want to stop getting offended about stupid fucking shit. Offended? Or just wanting to see people like them on screen? Its about time the world actually woke up to what disabled people can do, instead of focusing on what they can't. What if they cant act? Cast them anyway? If they cant act, they wouldn't be an actor. Have you seen "Doctors" ? " I love Doctors but some of the performances from the leads remind me of Crossroads.

"I don't see why the trans community (or some of them) would object to Scar Jo playing a trans woman. She's gorgeous and would show trans women in a positive light. Or would it be better if a Hulk Hogan look a like portrade a trans woman Maybe that's a humorous comment, but why not? Are only traditionally beautiful transwomen acceptable? Here we go " Meaning what? I'm just saying why shouldn't somebody make a movie about a transwoman who looks like Hulk Hogan if they want to, and why should transwomen be beautiful in order to be seen in a positive light?

"This is another instance of us, society, being at one of those moments of change. More roles at all levels should reflect society. This would give actors with protected characteristics the same chance as mainstream actors to learn and hone their craft. The roles are so few and far between that we end up with no one but a 'big name' being suitable as everyone else hasn't had an opportunity to become popular. Over here we also have an issue that our acting royalty are nearly all upper middle class. I think someone mentioned the Black James Bond issue. People seem unable to suspend their belief for an entirely fictional character being represented by someone of colour yet are happy to defend 'believing' an able bodied actor representing a disabled character. As we have more actors of colour being given opportunities and becoming popular it is now a thing that we can even moot having a Black James Bond. With more actors with disabilities or different genders gaining a foothold we'll be able to moot them taking on roles previously seen as able bodied etc. " Well said, Lickety.

"I should avoid these threads, I know they're going to show me how the general public really view me. Upset as fuck. Crazy Too late, she’s gone No loss tbh, she really wasn't a particularly nice person" Well I’ve been chatting to her for a couple of weeks and she’s lovely actually, totally different to how she comes across on some threads.

"I should avoid these threads, I know they're going to show me how the general public really view me. Upset as fuck. Please don't think everyone is unable to empathise and act on behalf of others. There are millions of us who care about equality, and work for a world where race, gender, sexuality or disability are less and less of a barrier to opportunity. Progress is way too slow but I think it is happening x"

"Am I offended that actors play roles such as Forrest Gump? People with cancer? No. Should we then use actual rapists murders and gunmen in films? No " Yes. It really pissed me off when an Australian was cast to play the God of Thunder. How hard can it be to find an Asgardian!

I’m really disappointed, nay angry at the cunty comments personally to Elpis, regardless of what you may have thought of some of her opinions or own posting style. No fucking empathy or tact.

Maybe that comment was slightly out of order and she may be a lot nicer in real life, but on these forums she came across as offensive, dismissive, insulting and transphobic. I call it as I see it to be honest.
