Donate a Coat this winter to The Salvation Army and help people living on low incomes who struggle to afford adequate winter clothing.
Many people have a coat in their wardrobe that no longer fits or is hardly worn. Give it to The Salvation Army, Donate a Coat Appeal, and we'll put it to good use helping older people, families in need and people who are homeless.
Donating a coat for someone else to wear is a simple act of kindness, which costs little to the giver. All people need to do is to donate an unwanted coat that is clean, in good condition and suitable for another person to wear, and The Salvation Army will give it to someone else that needs it.
I am taking some this week into our local shop maybe you can help too if have some old ones or ones you dont need. xx jo |

There's a lot too that, I think. Certainly you shouldnt give money to beggars, if you want to make a donation, give it to a charity.....Although I usualy do give money to buskers as I think they are earning their money (even if they're awfull) |

Believe me just having to do it, is deterrent enough. |

Promotes it in what way exactly?.....in the way that someone would leave their established home and rough it just because there is an abudance of coats and sleeping bags available to 'would be' homeless people?
Am I wrong to say that in previous posts you have stated that you work in the social housing sector?....if I am wrong them I apologise, if I am right then I would have thought that you understood the problems of homeless people more than most.

I have no idea what it is like to be homeless, but I did witness the care in the community program and its glorious metropolis of Cardboard City, everyday. |

We are not allowed to give sleeping bags we can only offer accommodation some refuse because they are so entrenched. There are reasons why we can't give them out.. |

Please can we not turn this thread into a defensive rant, its about kindness and giving without strings....
Can the OP tell me please, is it any ASDA because I have several that I would like to give, but couldn't justify taking them to the recycle bank. Knowing they will get a good home would make me very happy. |

When we lived and worked in the London area my husband worked on a voluntary basis with the Centrepoint charity as a mentor.
Were there a large number of homeless who were entrenched in the 'lifestyle'?...yes, of course there were, but for every one living rough by choice there were dozens more sleeping on the streets because there was no other option.
In a city like London there are NEVER the places in hostels and shelters to cover anymore than a minority of those living rough.
So the Sally Army idea of donating a coat this winter is a marvellous and worthwhile cause to support. |

Also the hostels are more dangerous than the streets. |

Of course its a great idea I was simply stating what can't be given out. clothes are greatly needed and of course there are not the bed spaces something I am working on at present..
I too worked most of my career in London and understand the whole homeless thing. The government have created a no second night out so by 2012 they want no rough sleepers.
I understand the effects of homelessnes as I have rough slept due to homelessness. We are crying out for funding but with so little money to go around. |

Not the supporting people funded ones as they have experienced and excellent staff working there.. Yes there are private ones which have a reputation but those have no part in the housing process. |

Alternatively, there are numerous Salvation Army charity shops around the country. Hand the coats in there, and other items too, all gratefully received.
Other charity shops are available. "
Or a homeless drop in service with outreach attached they arecrying out for clothing for the winter months.. |
