Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

From the England Team's performance at the World Cup?

I have been impressed with Southgate's positive management style. Unlike other managers 'teaching' business leaders how to succeed I think he has demonstrated good leadership and management.

Doing your best, recognising what you have achieved, failing well and recovering are good lessons for all of us.

I was hoping for other lessons. I didn't watch it (I only like penalty shoot outs) so I don't know if there was rolling around stuff that we didn't do etc.

Just because you're not deemed "the best" doesn't mean you're not good enough.

You're allowed to be proud of yourself as long as you try.

There is no 'I' in team..

There was a 'one for all and all for one' attitude which really came across ..

And there is no shame in losing

That if you've done your best and left it all on the field then you have not failed.

Our country has been guilty of branding anything other than the winner "shit" for too many generations in all ways. It's a horrible mentality to have.

Do you think we are closer to learning this lesson after this World Cup?

It was really good fun getting behind them... and I genuinely had hopes they'd make it to the final. But we all knew they weren't really as good as some of the other teams in the tournament. If they'd been in the other half of the draw they wouldn't have made it to the quarters. I'm glad they went deep. It'll give them a boost. They're a young team. I hope at the Euros and the next one it'll help them raise their game so they really are as good as the best. It's a growth curve.

To my mind the way they played against Croatia in the first half was right up there with Brazil and France and Belgium. So they really have got that in them. I can't wait to see them bringing that out again and sustaining it over entire games in the future.

I feel about them the same way I felt about Andy Murray in the beginning. So much potential. I'm so proud of them

Is the lesson that we shouldn't underestimate youth and potential?

The more I read and hear about Southgate the more respect I have for him. He has an openness of approach with staff, players and media which has brought the team closer to the fans. He is patient, encouraged others to open up and has a genuine warmth to him which makes him relatable.

He is also broad minded in all areas, looking to learn from anywhere that he can, listening to any coach from any sport. He’s a real revolutionary for the FA and will continue to do wonders for our national team.

Yes, I know nothing about him but he looks to be a man of integrity and humility.

I don't know anything about that side of things but if he's teaching those lessons, from me.

North Bucks

They were awesome they played as a team. Southgate is coming on really well.

However they needed a plan B as they ran out of ideas and legs.

I'd like to think so.

We live next door to a pub and the behaviour of the punters last night was different last night than I've ever seen after any match. The respect Southgate showed his team and the respect the team showed the fans and the opposition just seemed to knock the baying mob mentality right out of them.

For me it's the same as with Murray. They're definitely on the right track with the right manager. They just need to keep doing the same, build that cocky confidence up, and take their physical fitness to the next unprecedented level. It worked for Murray because he had that raw potential. We all saw in the first half of the game last night that England (much to our surprise perhaps) actually do have that potential. They just need to keep on pushing it to higher and higher levels so they can bring that performance to every game and to the entire duration of it.

In short, be proud of what you achieved... but don't sit on your laurels and hope for it to fall at your feet again. Next time you're likely to need to beat a whole other league of players

Exactly. I've been at things organised with other football managers to share their skills with leaders in business. It was mostly crap that would have alienated my staff and customers.

North West Leeds

We learnt the following:

If Baddiel & Skinner sing your football song you only get to a semi final

Beating poor teams like Tunisia, Panama, Colombia and Sweden does not make you anything other than very average

Harry Kane can score against poor teams with penalties and those that hit him on the way in

Gareth Southgate is a nice bloke who has done wonders for the wearing of a waistcoat and if It's a Knockout is ever revived he should be the team manager. (Inflatable unicorn races, throwing rubber chickens etc)

To win the World Cup England must follow one simple rule..... select 3 West Ham players in the team. Two will get you the goals and the other will hold aloft the trophy.

Oh and never get confused and wrapped up in the frenzied over hype that arrives at every major tournament.

Thank you for your contribution.

I think the frenzy served a purpose. For some this will be a period of precious memories of people coming together. One of the young ones in my life talked about watching the game on Saturday at Wireless and cheering with thousands of others.

Hearing that song played on an accordion by a busker was not a highlight of my life but everyone knows the tune.

The lessons I am extracting about all of this are not about football but about life, work, management, resilience, team spirit and joy.
