They often say that "they" (politicians, University Heads, etc) are paid so much as, in the jobs market, their skills would command such a salary.... for people like Lineker et al, I don't think that's likely in the real world, is it?

The BBC competes against other broadcasters and pays people like Lineker salaries that other broadcasters would pay him.

Of course, in an abstract sense, it's completely unfair, but unless people like him voluntarily decide to take lower salaries they will get paid on the rarity value of their particular skills.

I'm afraid they kind of are. Just look at any thread on here where someone asks for career advice and ~70% of the posts will tell them to 'go with their passion' with zero consideration of whether they are actually any good at it or whether there's any demand. For what it's worth, even on the purely vocational point, I would say do what you are good at rather that what is "useful". I was shit at maths and science. If I had done A levels in those subjects. I would have got crap grades and probably not got to university.

I would agree that being good at something should be the primary issue.

My point, although i did ramble, is that there's no other time in human history where there was a greater meritocracy than we have now. I don't think it's valid for anyone to bitch about what other people earn as long as there are relatively equal opportunities for other people to compete for those jobs. Exceptions to that principle include fucking bankers who earn artificially high wages off the back of state bailouts that I disagree with in principle.

That may be true but most people have a concept of fairness that believes that excessive differentials in different types of work are unfair. The classic example is the common comparison made between the wages paid to top footballers and nurses. Most people would say it's unfair that footballers get paid not more, even though professional football is probably the most meritocratic industry going.

Your concept of fairness essentially says that that kind of differential reward is fair as long as there are no barriers to entry to sought after professions. As I say, most people don't agree with that. Given "fairness" is a subjective abstract concept, the governing idea of fairness will generally be what most people think. Which is why footballers have to pay half their income in tax to be redistributed in a way felt to be in accordance with that concept of fairness

I think people who whinge about fairness tend to be lefties who don't make up any more than half the population, almost by definition. Honestly, the only people in my daily life who talk about fairness are children. I also find it to be a curse of people with too many brothers and sisters, but i digress.

I also think it's a terrible strategy to talk about fairness. It's far more objective to talk about the inherent value of some Labour over others. Nurses are inherently more valuable than footballers, there's just much larger supply of those skills. Footballers take far bigger risks, the average wage of a footballer isn't particularly high, it's just a tiny percentage who make enormous wages for a very short time of their lives. That time can be cut short by injury or a drop in form. There's a reason that the overwhelming majority of top footballers are working class.

"The inherent value of some labour" is just another subjective way of talking about fairness. If you say the labour of nurses is inherently more valuable than that of top footballers you're making a value judgement that caring for sick people is more important than the fun people get watching top footballers.

You can't get away from subjective value judgments when discussing the organisation of society.

It's way more objective than subjective. We have ~7bn people in the world who each need ~2,000 calories per day otherwise they will die. That's not subjective. So farming is inherently more important than watching football. Nobody is going to die if the footballers all go on strike for a year.

It depends on the outcome you’re looking for. I think people are naturally different and diverse, and that education that is built on too narrow a focus eg. solely STEM subjects (which are important and I’m not arguing against them) is insufficient. There should be equal weight to all subjects - children will prosper best if they study subjects that celebrate all of their possible talents - a broad curriculum. One that invokes their curiousity and lights their spark of enquiry. They will then have a hunger to learn. We de-professionalise teachers and the fact that teaching is a creative subject, learning does not happen in a delivery system but through stimulation, provocation and engagement. If there’s no learning going on, if you don’t reach people then the education system is flawed. Teaching may be happening but is learning occurring? Focusing on a narrow spectrum of achievement will lose many and leave others with parts untouched. They’re kids. It’s about curiosity not compliance and a system of testing. Life is inherently creative, we shouldn’t be limiting potential and exploration and diversity so early.

I'd like a world where ~7bn people have ~2,000 calories each per day, at least one house per 3 people, healthcare for all so on and so forth.

We're never going to achieve that if you promote the message that media studies is as important as medicine and accountancy is as important as food production.

Our economy is already massively imbalanced towards bullshit occupations that simply circulate wealth that already exists, instead of creating new wealth.

"I disagree.

In terms of the proportion of the workforce who are actually digging something out the ground, putting something together intelligently or generating anything we need to survive, it's 19.2% in March 2018. That's just a fact.

And?

We have a trade deficit of ~£3bn a year and a national debt that is 86% of GDP. That's a pretty toxic combination. Hence why the devaluation of the pound over the last couple of years has done fuck all the change the trade deficit.

You’re giving me stats. That’s great.

It doesn’t change my viewpoint about education. I’m not quite sure what you’re arguing/proving, sorry...?"

In simple terms, you / we can't afford the world view you have.

"I always enjoy the 'high pay because of the possibility of a career ending injury' same for me & most people I know, if something catastrophic health wise happens ...that's it, but my employer still won't pay me 100s of 1000s of pounds 'just in case '"

Because it's about probability. Dangerous occupations do pay more across the board. It's one of the major factors that drives the perceived gender pay gap.

I disagree. I think by sparking people’s creativity through a broad curriculum and engaging more people in learning, curiousity, enquiry, we are better set to tackle what we need and have happier, healthier lives whilst doing so.

The ONS and Treasury disagree with you.

Are you saying that an economy based upon people emailing each other for 7 hours a day, rather than making something to sell, is doomed?

There's no need. Compare our economy with that of China's and show me which one is worth more. Then tell me if the winning economy exports more than it imports or not.

Well China's economy is worth a lot more than ours and it's growing a lot quicker than ours too. Our trade deficit is essentially additional debt to the our already eye watering total.

"They often say that "they" (politicians, University Heads, etc) are paid so much as, in the jobs market, their skills would command such a salary.... for people like Lineker et al, I don't think that's likely in the real world, is it?

Politicians should get paid A LOT more in my opinion. "

This. Politics doesn't attract the best leaders as the pay is piss poor compared to CEO, Military top ranks and even Civil Service pay
