"All Along The Watchtower - Hendrix better than Dylan"
To be fair, every cover of a Dylan song is better than Dylan's version... Great song writer but terrible voice.
My favourite cover is The Housemartins' version of Caravan of Love, it's almost unrecognisable as the Isley Brothers original. Here they both are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiwB0KNfVlo vs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wibyuGQlyo

That is a fair point - but it's not entirely accurate. XTC did a really shite version of All Along The Watchtower - and William Shatner's version of Mr. Tambourine Man is truly criminal.
Dylan did it best on those comparisons. |

Shine on you crazy diamond - Christy Moore. Better than Floyd.
As the crow flies - Rory Gallagher. Better than Tony Joe Whites’ original.
Sunday morning coming down - Jerry Lee Lewis. Massively superior to Kris Kristoffersons’ original. Like Dylan he writes some fantastic songs but most people deliver them better than him. |

Heresy but for a good lung busting singalong...
Born to Run - Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
Not better, but I love Bauhaus playing Ziggy & David Grey Say Hello Wave Goodbye, which brings me to Tainted Love - Soft Cell, much better than Gloria Jones. |

Don't let the sun go down on me - George Michael version where Elton appears half way through. Magic!
The Chain - Florence and The Machine. The Chain IS my favourite song of all time; due to my racing passion! Love their version of it. |

Heresy doesn't come close. I am going to hunt you down...
Does Springsteen's acoustic version count as a self-cover? |

I love Dylan's original version. It fits the album it's from perfectly. What Hendrix did with it can only be described as phenomenal. Most covers of songs are a painting by numbers exercise, just going through the motions with not a whole lot of passion. The best covers are the ones where the artist truly lives and breathes the song. Hendrix immersed himself in All Along The Watchtower as if he'd written it, and it shows. |

I first discovered this one sat on a plane in New York waiting to fly home - was played over the cabin PA while people were boarding - was one of those "I know this but can't quite place it" things until it got to the chorus:
https://youtu.be/xTHbWbEM0F0
The Bluebeaters - Roll With It
And while we're talking Oasis covers can I just throw Mike Flowers Pop's cover of Wonderwall in there which I thought was a work of genius the first time I heard it |

"To be fair, every cover of a Dylan song is better than Dylan's version... Great song writer but terrible voice."
To be fair I thought the same for years and then one day it just clicked and I saw a new side to Dylan/ his voice suddenly felt right -now I can honestly say that I prefer neither the original nor the cover of his songs -I do however still hate him when he is having a mega out of time/ tune off day in his live performances though. |

I’d have to agree, The Jam doing “Heatwave” live was a highlight in their early set. The Clash also did some great covers live, “Police & Thieves” being an obvious choice too. I also remember seeing them cover The Ramones “Blitzkrieg Bop” in ‘78 - that was a real surprise. |

"Slipknot and korn covering the beastie boys song sabotage.
Machine head singing hallowed be thy name..the iron maiden song."
I love that Korn/Slipknot collab it's brilliant
Have you heard Cradle Of Filth cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name? It's really good
Johnny Cash covering Hurt by Nine Inch Nails
Lacuna Coil covering Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
Also I see a band pop up on Facebook but there name escapes me but they're a brass band who are joined by a female vocalist and they do covers of Rage Against the Machine and they truly are amazing |

Last two from me...
The Piano Guys
A Thousand Years
Bring Him Home
They are not strictly covers as they are instrumental versions only, but both quite beautiful. |

Just listened to that www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF-hMABAr74 but I still don't think Florence is a patch on Stevie |

"Hurt - Jonny Cash.
even the writer of the song said that after Cash's version that the song did not belong to him anymore."
This ^.... Absolutely nailed it with a heartfelt version that summed up his life and demons brilliantly |
