Controlling your dopamine addiction

I'm going to enjoy a little flutter on the forums today and then start easing off, with a view to taking a break for a while. I do this from time to time because I'm aware of the fact that, as with other social websites, it just feeds me little dopamine hits and I can get a bit addicted to that.

Anyone else recognise this aspect to online socialising? If you don't think you're addicted have you tried taking a day or two off? What's your approach to kicking the habit? And do you do this with your other social websites and apps?

I think the way social websites and apps work is they give you little dopamine kicks of social interaction and validation that break up your day. But it's a bit like watching tv; mildly entertaining and diverting, a bit superficially rewarding, and can draw you away from real life. I think it's quite a particular addiction that needs controlling otherwise it can run away with you. Other things I enjoy on a deeper level aren't necessarily as potentially negative as getting sucked into online socialising.

I think online has a definite place for helping people get through trauma or bad times... and I've used this place to help me get through some bad times in the past. But there's also a benefit in pulling away from it from time to time and making sure you're in control of it and not it in control of you

North Bucks

When on holiday leave my phone in the safe and have a digital detox for a couple of weeks. It’s quite liberating.

When going out local I do the same. Feels good.

I dip in and out the forums anyway but do spend a lot of my time on other platforms and trading so it’s nice to get away from it all and find other diversions.

I was working out in the sticks, so I couldn’t get on Fab if I tried, which was a good thing really. Now, I can pick up 4G so I have a look at Fab on my breaks. I never look at FB it bores the tits of me, only keep it to keep in touch with my Aussie mates and see what they’re up to. I’m guessing I’ll get bored of this to soon and probably won’t use it.

Yes I do OP. I'm away soon and it will be a perfect chance to just take a break from it. I think what with the excitement of finding new people to fuck and talk with it's easy to spend a bit too much time on here. It allows you to reassess things. (I'm waiting for Scarlet's comment on this thread!)

Since I decided to take a break from work ( well kind of enforced as I haven’t been too well ) , in January , I’ve been on here more often . I don’t use any other social media .

Apart from the odd break here and there ( again beyond my control , unless you consider forum misdemeanors entirely my own fault ) I don’t feel the need to stop my dopamine fix that the site gives me .

I smoked up to forty cigarettes a day until my heart attack in January , and gave up immediately . So that was a regular dopamine fix gone . I also ate plenty of crap food and fizzy sweet drinks , and stopped that too , more dopamine gone . I also loved to get out three times a week with my wife to get another dopamine fix with our sexual antics . That went too for a few months , gradually it’s getting back to how it was albeit little steps .

So aside from the odd game on the xbox , the World Cup , and my wife , there isn’t much other than this to give me a dopamine fix , and to be fair , most of the time it doesn’t ! But it’s better than nothing , and the forums can be an entertaining aside to the general everyday things that life offers .

Even so , I often find myself having time away from here through choice , and soon forget it .

I have just watched Panorama, BBC1 @ 7pm, all about smartphones and how social media apps manipulate them so as to entice people to keep clicking on that like button, or keep posting stories to see how many people respond to them...

as you say its down to the dopamine hits but that's what people at FB and other sites are counting on so that you or whoever will spend as much time as you can on their app and getting so sucked into it that you become addicted, which is why they invented the endless scroll function, so people can continuously search for anything and everything. Very interesting stuff but I would argue that it only applies to people who have an addictive personality in the first place. For me FB is just a convenient way of keeping in contact with family and friends from around the world, although I will be deleting my account in a couple of weeks anyway, same as with when I get fed up of fab I will either hide or delete

I only come on the forum as a quick distraction whilst cooking the dinner or waiting for Clem to finish in the toilet, and I don’t get a dopamine hit from the forum as it’s all a load of bollocks and people would say the same about me anyway. I use the main site to find the people I want to fuck and then I fuck them in the real world, so what’s the issue?

I haven’t the jaw dropping body or excellent shoe collection to do her real justice.

I take a break when I get bored. I find this much less addictive than other sites.
