Morning workout advice

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I'm planning on hitting the gym before work about 3 times a week.

Am I better off having breakfast before or after the workout?

And how much protein do I need to consume (I weigh 85kg if that helps)

My goal is lose a bit of body fat and put a bit of muscle on (tone up more than bulk up)

Any advice would be great

My trainer told me to do it on your fasting period. So, not before. Have a protein-rich breakfast after for your muscles.

I've got some protein powder I was going to mix with water and take with me. Am I better off having this afterwards as well?

Is that breakfast advice or are you suggesting I change my name?

I'm ok with either one

If it's really early doors then I would either have nothing or a banana. If you eat nothing make sure you have a protein rich snack 30 minutes after your workout.

Depends on how much protein you get in the rest of your diet.

Rule of thumb is protein at breakfast time, before work out.

I've probably got a daily diet record sheet somewhere that would help you work it out somewhere if it's any use.

It's handy for seeing where you're over indulging and where to need to add/enhance your diet.

What happens if you do over indulge in protein?

Too much protein can be bad for your kidneys or if you eat too much of anything then you'll store it as fat.

Nothing major, just lose some body fat, tone up a bit and generally be healthier. I'll probably do more cardio than weight lifting

Give James smith a look

He tells u how it is

Basically it’s in vs out

Work out ur tdee , aim for 500cals less

Hit ur protein

Don’t worry about the rest

Hit weights to maintain current muscle

It’s really that simple

Total daily energy expenditure

There’s loads of online calculators

If it fits my Marcos is a good 1

It will give u ur daily calories

Then use something linked my fitness pal to log ur calories

If ur in deficit u will lose weight

That’s the basic mechanics of it

Hit ur protein goals and stay in deficit and ur half way there

Not necessarily.

A pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle. I see this a lot, people saying they're working their ass off in the gym but not losing weight.

As a pound of fat takes up 1 1/2 times the space of muscle what they're actually doing is changing their shape.

I advise measuring weight chest hips waist and one thigh before starting a training regime, then re-measuring every week.

They see their weight pretty consistent but the other measurements changing.

Got to get the diet right too. Balanced and varied. The body adapts to routine and doesn't process the same way after a while. Same with the exercise regime.

Got to keep the body stimulated.

Weight training might not burn as many calories as cardio in a session but it can burn more overall. My point was lots of people seem to think cardio is the key to weight loss. I think it's a combination of the 2 with good food choices. Running 10 miles a few times a week will burn a shed load of calories but typically runners put on weight as they're hungry. I'm not an expert though, so probably not explaining myself very well.
