England fans are insane if they don't want Belgium to win tonight.
Winning means that we face Brazil (possibly Mexico) in the quarter finals.
Losing means we face Sweden or Switzerland.
It's a no-brainer. Put the England under 18 team out there tonight and for goodness sake, make sure they don't score any goals. |

"Not for me. Play to win. We will meet who we meet and if we are good enough we will beat them. Winning gives confidence
Fun fact, England have never beaten Brazil in a tournament match"
Theres a first for everything right?
Im not saying we will beat brasil, but i think theyre the weakest brasil team for years and if we cant beat them in the quarter final we dont deserve to win it. |

Pick the best XI possible.
Why, now we’ve started to find a groove, would anyone want the team to lose or perform poorly?
Brazil don’t look special, in fact NO team looks special this World Cup.
Everyone is beatable.
Plus, I’m pretty sure we play whoever is in group H next round, not group E |

Did you watch the Brazil game last night? I'm not sure they got out of 2nd gear.....

We have the same GD, but only have 2 yellow cards to their 3, so would top the group if those statistics remained the same. If bookings are equal, FIFA would draw lots. |

Hmmmmmmmmm. I don't want us to lose but I'd like a favourable draw in the knockouts.
Maybe if we can get a couple of yellows from fringe players who we can do without next game. |

Of course I'll be cheering England to win tonight.
You never go out to lose, you give 100% every game.
I've also cheered Brazil at every game
The two teams facing each other, dilemma!
Well as I was born in England then it's obviously going to be "Three Lions" and not "Hino Nacional Brasileiro" I'll be singing |

I sincerely hope Southgate’s as good as his word, he shares my mentality... winning is a habit !
Win at all costs and meet the next test all guns blazing.
I couldn’t care less who we meet on the way to the cup, if we fully commit to every challenge and we’re good enough, we win.
England 4 ~ 0 Belgium
Kane to score a brace |

"Getting ahead of yourself need to beat Japan or Columbia first."
But that's irrelevant really. It depends on the definition of success in the tournament. Going on to it, then i would have said that getting to the quarter final was acceptable performance and a semi exceeds expectations.
To get knocked out before then is failure, however you look at it.
The point is that if we avoid topping the group, then we wouldn't even have a tough match until the semi final. Whereas topping it is likely to punish us by meeting the most likely Champions, at the first real hurdle. |

I'd love to play Brazil in the quarters, what an event that would be.
But first we have at 2 other games to focus on and all due respect should go to those teams.
Anyone wanting England to lose either isn't English or knows nothing about football and absolutely definitely hasn't ever played the game. |

If you think taking the "easy" route is the best option for England, then you are basically labelling England as not being good enough to win the world cup. A winning team faces and defeats the opposition regardless who they are. The Three Lions should go out there with a positive, optimistic, winning mindset and show the world we are going to bring football back home! |

For the record, England are definately not good enough to win the world cup. As in, I'm 96% confident they won't.
I would be seriously impressed with a semi final appearance and that would make me very optimistic about euro 2020 and world cup 2022 as our best players are all young. |

You need to up your game with your rugby knowledge, you've used the plural of 'cup' there. Let's not even start talking about many tesms have a realistic chance of winning the RWC.
Top marks for condescension though. |

It depends on how England cope with being passed into boredom by the Spanish
Oh we can knock it around the pitch aimlessly with the best of them"
But when Silva or Iniesta decide to take aim, it's devestating.
That said, I could argue for Spain going out earlier anyway. |

Don't see why not. They struggled to beat Iran, and only drew with Morocco.
So we're going to the final as things stand..."
If we get passed Colombia. That will be harder than people think. We will get better with each game though, so if we do progress, we will beat Spain.
To be honest, it wouldn't worry me if we did get the Brazil route. I don't think Brazil are much better than they were four years ago. They haven't shown much this time around, and I would prefer to play Japan in the next round over Colombia. |

We are better than Brazil. Brazil couldn't beat Switzerland - a team that we could possibly meet in the quarter final. We would be confident of beating Switzerland. Brazil have a couple of stars in their team - players capable of turning a game. England have them all over the field.
From that side of the draw, I would rate France, Portugal and Uruguay above Brazil. |

"Could we beat Spain?
Don't see why not. They struggled to beat Iran, and only drew with Morocco.
So we're going to the final as things stand...
Coutinho is better than anyone in our midfield. They've got decent strikers too.
I like your enthusiasm, as long as England don't equalise then i might start to get excited about how far we can go"
I honestly would have greater confidence about beating Brazil in the quarter final, than I have about beating Colombia in the next round. |

He punched it out nicely I thought.
Exactly. He could have won us the game there if he'd let it in. "
Couldn't make it look too bait. He had to give it back to them to bang it in. |

We have never beaten Brazil in a competitive match , and there’s a good reason for that . They have a team with ten men capable of changing a game . We have one or two . And it’s always been that way .
Columbia are the easier route for us to get further , we should beat them . Switzerland are a highly respected team ranked sixth in the world .
I think it was a good result for us tonight . |

"I'd love to play Brazil in the quarters, what an event that would be.
But first we have at 2 other games to focus on and all due respect should go to those teams.
Anyone wanting England to lose either isn't English or knows nothing about football and absolutely definitely hasn't ever played the game.
I'm a rugby fan primarily, so we actually know something about success and winning world cups. Football fans revel in their ignorance of strategy and rely on "positive thinking" to overcome the laws of nature.
You need to up your game with your rugby knowledge, you've used the plural of 'cup' there. Let's not even start talking about many tesms have a realistic chance of winning the RWC.
Top marks for condescension though.
How many teams would you say have a realistic chance of winning this world cup? "
Maybe 7 out those that are left. Imagine the rugby equivalent of Germany not qualifying for the last 16?
Let's not even get started on Italy and Holland not making it to Russia. |

We've played them once in 42 years. We lost 2-1 to the team that went on to win the world cup. I hardly think your stats are damning. Brazil do not have ten men that are capable of changing a game. They have two - Neymar and Coutinho. That's it. This Brazil team are not much better (if at all) than the side that were trounced 7-1 at home in the world cup, four years ago. |

The football is a 32 team tournament of which 8 teams had any serious chance of winning. Rugby is 20 team tournament of which 5 or 6 teams have any serious chance of winning. It's proportional. |

What I meant was that there's too much romantic nonsense about, play whoever and we can beat anyone in front of us. Rubbish.
Southgate already deserves a medal for his strategy tonight. He's also borrowing heavily from NFL and rugby tactics. When England won the rugby world cup, we beat the favourites with a dull as dishwasher water strategy of set pieces. It was ugly, boring and effective.
Southgate did the right thing and anyone who wanted us to win tonight, doesn't get it. That's my point. |

My friend thinks footballers are just athletes who want to win games no matter what. I credit them with more intelligence than that. If you thought you were watching Belgium and England play at their very best and most goal hungry tonight you're an idiot. Instead the whole game was a delicious work of strategy. Did you not notice how utterly shit Belgium suddenly became after they scored? They were almost begging us to score. And what did Rashford do with a virtually open goal? He kicked it half way to the moon. And what of Wellbeck's supposed shot on goal? It was half way to hitting the corner post.
No no. The game tonight was all about strategy and England won it fantastically. In the dying moments, knowing that was the case, Belgium suddenly wanted to stamp themselves on the game and show they were genuinely the better side by going 2-0 up. But we raised our game and denied them. Top playing all round from our guys. But I'm happy that the A team are the ones who are going to be playing Columbia. That's the team I'm excited about |

Not quite. In 1966, City won the second tier title (then Second Division, now Championship). Liverpool won the league title. |

Decent players, but none of them are game changers. The fact that they are Brazilian does not make them better than what we have. Raheem Sterling outscored both Jesus and Firmino last season, as did Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy. Lingard and Ali are proven game changers. Even Rashford has a decent track record for making a difference. Brazil will scrape past Mexico, and will lose to the first decent team they play.
England have played Brazil three times in the last five years - winning one, and drawing two. Now granted - they're only friendlies, but the thing is - Brazil don't lose many friendlies. They do take them seriously. And somehow, they just can't beat England. |

I bow down to you more knowledgeable regular football fans, it seems you were of the same thinking as the gaffer.

To make it super easy... from now on we want to win every game. Yesterday was just a weird one where it benefitted us to lose but it wouldn't have been sporting to have looked like that was the result we were trying to get so we had to pretend we were goal hungry when we weren't |
