I have noticed over the years that the spelling and grammar on Forum’s, not just fab, is becoming worse.
Is it lack of time in our busy schedule, education or what other reason?
Thoughts please and I must stipulate that in no way do I want anyone to be put down, abused, scorned in this thread.
I realise there are peeps that have a genuine problem with writing and spelling and I just wondered if it is becoming more widespread or is the electrical age we have moved into.
No trolls or abuse to anyone please.

To be honest, I don't really care about odd spelling mistakes or grammar. It's easy to do.
And if anyone on here wanted to judge my intelligence or education on my spelling then i wouldn't want to meet them anyway |

I have noticed over the years that the spelling and grammar on forums generally, not just fabswingers, has become worse.
Is this caused by lack of time in our busy schedule, quality of educational standards or what other reason?
Thoughts please, and I must stipulate that in no way do I want anyone to be put down, abused or scorned in this thread.
I realise there are people who have genuine problems with writing and spelling and I wonder if this is becoming more widespread, or is the deteriation being caused by the electrical age we have moved into.
No trolls or abuse to anyone please.
Further corrected and improved for you OP, you are very welcome. |

I think that pre Internet we didn't read words written by strangers as often as we do now. There have always been people who don't spell or use grammar in the accepted way, we just weren't exposed to it in the way we are now.
My opinion is that as long as I can understand what's written it's fine. |

At times my posts are full of typos and spelling mistakes. I don't overy care, it's a forum and most of the time I'm posting as a form of distraction. I do put more effort in to messages though |

I don't think it's to do with lack of education. I'm uneducated, but my spelling and grammar is pretty good. I taught myself.
I think it comes down to laziness and a lack of self respect. |

I don't give a flying fuck about whether the spelling is bang on or not.... as long as i can read it then I'm happy with that..
Similarly if, god forbid, someone misses out an apostrophe its hardly a hanging offence ...

Lanuage evolves.
Words die, new ones appear.
Text written 400 years ago well nigh impossible to read without a bottle of aspirin and a wet towel.
400 years from now, this text will be the same - unintelligible to most.
It doesn't matter.
The purpose of words is to allow humans to communicate with each other.
So long as they understand each other, who cares if it complies with some technical rule book. I don't.

Good point about the Internet, maybe we notice it more because we're exposed to it more.
Back in the olden days the only written things I'd see that weren't newspapers etc were hand written letters from friends.
Work emails never have the same amount of spelling issues as forums or messages, just some typo's maybe. |

I think it's a good question. I find it interesting that only a few people actually answered your OP. Most just get defensive or don't actually answer the question. |

I just notice the worst offenders are overwhelmingly male, maybe that's the user base of the site. I think women are better at writing anyway, on average. Plus there are a lot more stupid men, than stupid women. |

Fair point. I was thinking more in general, not just spelling. All the "I hate men" stuff. |

One questions the motives of that sometimes. Is it truly, an attempt to help? Or is it a sly attempt at belittling? |

Smaller screens equals more concentration effort for checking, which can be left to technology.
Forum posts are not job applications for editing or proofreading the Oxford dictionary, so warrant less effort and can be expected when people are tired, in bed, problematic circumstances like riding a bus - and a host of other confounding factors against the perfect standards you may expect.
Social communication isn't the easiest thing for everyone and some may get more confidence to post, rather than speak. They may still have their confidence knocked though, lowering their standards due to stress etc
The internet can bring many different people together of vastly varied standards - the volume of people makes it easier to move on, if you don't approve etc |

"Wonder how many of the spelling police have actually used their ability to spell to help others?"
I used to help others in the past once I qualified as a Proofreader. I used to help people compile their CV's at a Job Club. In addition, I helped Charity Groups with their websites, checking spelling etc to ensure clarity and professionalism in getting their message across to people.
It is amazing how many supposedly intelligent people in charge of businesses simply cannot spell to save their lives. |

If someone has an ability others havent got and feel so strongly about it they should be getting off their arses and helping others. I wanted to change peoples lives so got off my arse and did something about it instead of bit picking others |

I once was berating a colleague about the amount of spelling mistakes on his reports, especially considering there was a spell checker that highlighted mistakes. His retort I thought was hilarious and unanswerable: "I know, but it gives you too many options" |

I have observed, over the years, that, in general, the overall standard of spelling and grammar within these forums, as well as those on similar websites, has gradually declined.
Is this caused by members sufferring an insufficiency of time in our busy schedules, a lower standard of general education among the populace or possibly some other reason?
Please share your thoughts on the matter here, although I feel it my duty to respectfully remind you that you should take care not to humiliate, abuse or scorn others on this thread.
I realise that some people have genuine problems with both writing and spelling and I wonder if such difficulties are becoming increasingly widespread, and if so, to what extent? Alternatively, could the deteriation in good spelling and grammar be a direct consequence of the modern computer age into which we have now irreversibly progressed?
No trolls or abuse to anyone please!
I commend this amended statement to the house! |
