Can any football fans explain handball to me in terms of when it is penalised? Does there have to be any intent or disruption to play for a penalty to be given?
There have been at least 3 penalties this world cup where a forward basically struck the ball into the defenders arm and got a penalty. Other than stand with their arms behind their back, I'm not sure how the defenders were supposed to avoid this? |

It's a massively contentious issue surrounding what is intentional and what is accidental.
Last night there was a shocking penalty given against a defender who was using his arms to jump higher, ball brushes hand, ref eventually gives ridiculous penalty.
The law states that the hand/arm must make a clear and deliberate movement towards the ball for it to be deemed punishable by penalty. |

Thanks, I thought deliberate was part of the criteria but I've seen at least 3 penalties where there was clearly no intent. The defender had their arms where any normal human needing to balance, would have them. Including the one you mentioned. |

I still to this day fail to understand how Maradona got away with the most famous handball ever.
It took all this time to make sure with technology that can never happen again.
However after last night its clear and obvious they still struggle to officiate 'handball' |

VAR has made a mockery of it .
The play gets slowed down , stopped , rewound and so on giving a totally unreal perspective .
Last nights penalty was no way deliberate . It’s just going to mean no defender will even attempt to get the ball in his own box from now on . |

There's shocking standards of officiating where handball is concerned. I wonder if the officials actually understand the laws themselves.
There appears to have been a change in style where by the officials are reluctant to make a decision now, leaving it to the jokers in the trailer to make. |

Yes but it's not even the only example. There was one where a winger blasted a cross that hit a defenders arm which was behind him. The defender was right next to him so he had no time to react. |

It’s meant to be when not intentional and it’s the players natural hand position.
The problem being now is that every player and half the crowd will appeal for handball now even if it’s not intentional.
The ref has a split second to make that judgement...the armchair supporters get to see it in hundreds of angles.

In my view it should quite simply be ball to hand isn't a penalty and hand to ball is! Refs and officials can slow replays down etc to get a better view! I'm not sure why last nights ball to hand was a penalty?! |

Surely as a ref you ask yourself:
Hand to ball or Ball to hand.
If your on the line or you stop a goal, hard lines, tough shit penalty. If it was ball to hand red card.
If a player is tucking his arms in or trying to protect them from the ball then I don't think it's a penalty. If it didn't hit the arm it would of hit the body instead. |

Obviously that wasn't handball last night but VAR and bizarre officiating has made tournament more of a spectacle.
More of this ridiculous drama please...until England are playing anyway. |

But so does the fourth official? |

Don't even mention him/her.
4th official is nothing more than a token gesture to control the technical areas. Too pussy to help a ref' make a correct and possibly crucial call durning the game. But he can patrol the technical areas like a boss |

Not until this World Cup they didn’t and they seems be getting used to decide whether something’s happened that the ref has missed rather than has he made the right decision or not. |
