EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

I’ve got a 45minute easy run on the programme today, I’m dreading it in the heat. It’s going to hurt after my 10 miles on Saturday...

I had a decent weekend of running. 10km race on Sunday, still struggling and not felt well all week so planned a steady run at 9.30 pace and finished pretty much bang on 54 minutes. Saturday was my 50th parkrun, which I walked in an hour with 2 of our regular volunteers who were celebrating their 50th birthdays, the tail runner was somewhat bemused when at the end of our first lap we all stopped and brought coffees before carrying on!

And yesterday I helped at a local triathlon, 100 miles in this heat - ouch!

I;m hetting there, a cold has probably been a blessibng in disguise as it forced me to rest. Heart race and pace were about what I;d expect on Friday, although there was a typo on the last post as it was 58 minutes!

Used the treadmill tonight, spent too much of the winter in the gy, to avoid the cold and now their air con is dragging me in!

Ran 4 miles home from work yesterday and it was bearable but couldn't do too much more. Even hydrating well it was tough!

I ran on Monday and managed 10k, tonight was my running club and I did some speed work intervals. Not as far as Monday, only 7k tonight. It’s just too hot!

I went for a run last night with my club - it was a quiz night which was fun (similar to orienteering).

Was considering running tonight, but decided not to. I now have to decide if I'm running before the football or after it tomorrow night!

Marathon training is Kicking. My. Arse. Recovery runs are hurting more than my long runs in this heat. I seriously need to sort out my nutrition and hydration better.

Oh the shame. It was all going so well. Then my foot felt funny, then my heel hurt and the Doc said I had an inflamed achilles tendon and I should rest. I was all ready to resume at a gentle pace last week but its too hot for a fat lad

Just over 9 miles last night. 40 minutes of intervals on the treadmill followed by a very hot steady run for an hour with my girlfriend. This heat is savage!

Ours was savage, very little shade though. First time I've ever wished I'd had a drink on a 5km. Blew completely in the last mile, got a 10km tomorrow and think it's going to be hard

You do know your half marathon pace should be about a minute or so slower that your 5-10k pace?

I used to run 5-10k at 8.51 and at the same time run halves at 10.06.

You do know your half marathon pace should be about a minute or so slower that your 5-10k pace?

You do know your half marathon pace should be about a minute or so slower that your 5-10k pace?

I used to run 5-10k at 8.51 and at the same time run halves at 10.06.

And I'm talking minutes per mile, not minutes per k "

The only advice I could give you is to take it easy - are you allowed to walk any of those days, or do you have to run? If you can walk, alternate running and walking days.

A year ago I decide that I was too big and fabulous and started running. My 5K parkruns started at 45 mins, now they are down to 27 mins. At end of June I did my first half Marathorn came in at 2hr20min.

Still got lot more running to do, want get my 5k parkruns to under 25min by end of the year.

I went to Weightwatchers, or it might have been Slimming World, a long time ago (I appear to have repressed the memory of which) and I put on more weight between the week 1 and 2 ‘in front of the group’ weigh in. There was audible air through teeth sucking from the rest of the group. I never went back.

We have all been there, thats why we're called the fab crap running club and run like toddlers chasing pugs lol. This place is great as you post your good and bad runs and everyone gives you positive feedback and helpful hints.

Download C25K and follow the instructions, you'll surprise yourself, it surprised us all if you get stuck on one day, don't panic just try again but stick at it and let us know how you get on

As for clothes, its entirely up to you, be comfortable but wear wicking clothes rather than cotton.

Exactly this, when I started last year I could barely run for the minute, the important thing is to stick at it.

As for all the gear? I still have one pair of road shoes, two pairs of shorts and run in a cotton t shirt using my phone for gps.

The kit doesn’t make you a runner, running fast doesn’t make you a runner, running makes you a runner.

I’m feeling guilty and shitty today, I’ve not ran since Tuesday. I’ve got a bit of a chest cold so I’ve hit pause on marathon training.

Any ideas on what I should be doing in this situation? I’m currently 3 weeks ahead of schedule and it’s meant to be a rest week anyway so short easy runs but I’m stressing

How far out from your race are you? If you are 3 weeks up you may be over stretched hence the illness , take a break, enjoy the rest, you are more likely to regress than progress by carrying on & not getting fully well.

Remember we actually improve when we rest & recover, not whilst running.

As for clothes, its entirely up to you, be comfortable but wear wicking clothes rather than cotton.

As for all the gear? I still have one pair of road shoes, two pairs of shorts and run in a cotton t shirt using my phone for gps.

I’m a crap mover, I won’t say runner currently. My aim this weekend is to get the app, and work out what needs to happen next. Wicking clothes take the sweat away from your body. Cotton t-shirts can feel hot and heavy after you have been running a while.

They also prevent chafing.

Though in hindsight of my running journey I would have bought running socks before I even left the sofa to save on blisters. Been fine since started wearing them.

Hi all, I’ve just found this thread.

I used to run a few years back and have a half marathon best of 2hrs 3 mins....then I got lazy...and heavier.

I started running with some colleagues earlier in the year and we did a C2-5K. Currently doing parkruns at 30 mins and did the Liverpool spring 10K (very hot day) in 1 hr 7. Building back up to a half and targeting 2 hr 30 at Manchester. I couldn’t do it without the runners at work encouraging me. If anyone local to Liverpool fancies joining me on a run then I can be found at croggy or princes parkruns, or waddling around Sefton Park at a weekend. Hopefully I will keep improving as I still have another 2 stones to lose xx

First run post-injury yesterday and I've somehow lost about 5 mins from my time.

Absolutely gutting because I was just about feeling ready to get into some form of competitive running.

It's just postponed my plans rather than completely ruined them though. Hopefully be able to get something done before the end of the year.

You sound the same as me, half pb of 2 hours 12, then stopped running and got fat and lazy. Restarted last year and have finally got back to comfortably running 6 miles (at least I'm assuming it will be easier on cooler days!)

I am planning another parkrun social soon, it's likely to be in the Midlands (Bedford area), so if you are able to make it, that will be great

When is the race you have planned? (the one you thought you would do originally). You may find that you bounce back to form quicker than you think.

Or use it as a feeler with no expectations so you know what to expect on the big race day.

Welcome and well done

it can be a bit daunting going to your first parkrun, but I'm hoping that everyone at the parkrun will give you support and you won't want to cry afterwards! Have a word with the run director before the start (get there about 10 minutes early for the newbie and visitors briefing) and they can keep an eye out for you and give you encouragement around the course (depending on the number of people there!)

You can have music when running, just make sure it's not too loud so you can't hear the other runners around you (especially if it is a lap course and you get faster runners coming through behind you )

End of August, so we'll see how it goes. Another light run today and it felt a lot better so we'll see how it goes.

One of the great things about parkrun is it is for all ages and abilities and you are never last as there is a tailwalker

I listen to music via a running app so I get time/speed updates as well. I run better with music on, I find it relaxes me.

There’s a lovely (although with a few little hills) parkrun at Delamere forest, and you can get a drink/food afterwards too.
