But until knocked out, yeah, they can win it as much as the next team.

Being a Scot I do have to say England have been the most exciting team to watch so far

Belgium will be the real test - if they beat them I think England will reach the semi finals cause they don’t need to fear any other team

Don't get carried away just yet . played 2,won 2 .but on paper with that opposition you would have expected that anyway. Only time will tell. The trouble with England once the hype starts then the self destruct button gets pushed . enjoy the moment and take each game as it comes

Poor Panama team but can only beat what's in front of you....let's hope press don't get carried away as per normal.

Lot of players that aren't scarred from previous tournaments so who knows.....someone once said....'its a funny old game'

These first two games were always going to be the looseners, Belgium is a step up.

We’re doing better than I’d ever hoped and brimming with confidence, the squad look good and play for each other...

I’m not getting carried away but it’s nice to wear the shirt with pride again

They beat two countries that most people would struggle to find on a blank map and people get carried away

There are at least 4 other teams showing way more quality than England right now and that doesn't even include the holders.

So may we, if anything we are more likely to than Belgium. If it's considered preferable to win the group then Belgium can't afford a draw with us, presuming the fair play ranking stays in England's favour as it currently is.

I think we’ve performed well so far, we should’ve beaten Tunisia by 4 or 5, like Belgium did.

Today we’ve beaten a poor team that intimidated us but we’re still able to score goals (2 pens).

We haven’t had a proper test yet, not sure if the Belgium game will be one either, both qualified and will give other players a run out.

I said we would’ve done well if we get out of group stage and we’re doing that. One game at a time but I’m not getting carried away yet.

Those that are saying we can win it now are usually supporters of lesser said teams like QPR, Watford etc that think two wins and their teams will be champions or heading in to Europe!!

Looking back to two weeks ago many people were writing England off before a ball was kicked and booking their plane tickets for Friday 29th.

We’ve done far better than I hoped or imagined that we would do, a leading goal scorer (bear in mind the last golden boot winner won with 6, the previous with 5) and qualified for the knockout stages with a game to spare.

I’m pleased and proud of the football that we’ve played, we’ve looked good and I think there’s plenty to get excited about. Of course it wasn’t perfect but no one ever is in the group stages, the fact that we will improve is a heartening one. Bring on Belgium and let’s get behind England.

If you don’t support England then that’s fine, support your team, but support

Probability or not, we're still in so we have a chance to win. When we're out, we don't have a chance.

"So negative . . I'm already getting sorted for the bus parade with the world cup

Same Some people just want England to lose so they can have a moan

Quarter final appearance would be a respectable result in my opinion. Semi final totally exceeds expectations. Why ? Why not just hope to win it ?

Because I understand how probability works and what's required to actually win a tournament like this. Spoiler alert: more than just hope. but if you hope they will get to the quarters or semis . Why not hope to win it ?

Because the probability drops below what a rational person would get excited about. Are you on the edge of your seat every week that they announce the lottery numbers? When you do the lottery do you hope to win it ?

I don't play because the probability isn't worth it! Why does that not surprise me Oh just pour me another wine ,we will enjoy the win together exactly. Bet they all have a world cup winning party when we win it "

In a competition involving 32 teams, the probability is against any individual team actually winning the tournament. You can take Brazil, Spain, Germany or whoever and the probability will be in favour one of the most other 31 teams winning the tournament and not them.

Anyway, you're missing the point of football. It's a world of irrationally and pointless attachments, we we can all hope for the improbable before return to real life.

"Being a Scot I do have to say England have been the most exciting team to watch so far

Belgium will be the real test - if they beat them I think England will reach the semi finals cause they don’t need to fear any other team

Belgium are set to rest players, so beating them isn't all that impressive if they do that.

My god you a barrel of laughs

They beat two countries that most people would struggle to find on a blank map and people get carried away

There are at least 4 other teams showing way more quality than England right now and that doesn't even include the holders.

Those that are saying we can win it now are usually supporters of lesser said teams like QPR, Watford etc that think two wins and their teams will be champions or heading in to Europe!! haha get a grip "

My point is that on your argument no one can logically hope to win it, given the improbability of any given team winning it.

Football is indeed a business, but not for us fans. We form irrational attachment to a particular team and no matter how Shit said team are, we continue to support them and continue to hope they will get better.

No supporter of, say, Accrington Stanley, drawn against Chelsea in the cup doesn't hope they will win, despite the improbability they will. As others of said, you're rather missing the point if you think hope depends on probability.

Regardless of what the players say to microphones I bet you my last penny Southgate will tell them your here to win and anything less is a failure (to some degree).

"

Of course they can! I refuse to believe that your knowledge of maths is that poor. Having reasonable hope doesn't mean you need more than a 50% chance!

Brazil have a 21% chance, that's better than any other team by a long shot. Brazil fans are reasonable to hope to win.

Good example. About once every 20 years a totally unexpected team win the league, Blackburn rovers before them. 1/20 = 5%. 1% more than the probability England have been given.

"Probability or not, we're still in so we have a chance to win. When we're out, we don't have a chance.

We had a 4% chance of winning at the start and we still do

Probability doesn’t work like that in sport; there are far too many variables.

That’s the beauty of sport

Yep... 50/ 50 chance. You just never know what might happen.

Out of interest, would you give yourself a 50% chance in a fight with Mike Tyson?

Yep. He might take one look at me and feel bad for me and let me win. "

Or bet on himself to lose. It happened on south park so why not.

In a competition involving 32 teams, the probability is against any individual team actually winning the tournament. You can take Brazil, Spain, Germany or whoever and the probability will be in favour one of the most other 31 teams winning the tournament and not them.

Correct, not sure what your point is though?

Anyway, you're missing the point of football. It's a world of irrationally and pointless attachments, we we can all hope for the improbable before return to real life.

So what's the probability cut off point when hope becomes "reasonable"? If it's reasonable to hope when the chances of your hope being disappointed are 79%, how about where the chances are 85% or 90%?

And perhaps more to the point, who is the reasonableness tsar who decides these things?

I'm gutted we ain't at our 2nd tournament. '58 don't count.

I bet your exactly the same. I'm jealous as fuzz that Wales ain't in it. But like fuck do I wish England to be home on the first flight.

Nuh good luck to them. Keep a level head, get behind your team, enjoy it, be proud. That's talking from experience.

The average age of the squad is ideal for an epic showing in 2022 if they do well now and make progress after. Harry Kane will be 28 next world cup, that thought gives me a semi by itself...
