So, Mrs and I have joined the local gym, and are into our 3rd week. I am doing the majority of excuse on the exercise bike and the rowing machine (usually 30 minutes each). Wifey is doing the bike and running machine, and at the end wet go onto the various weight machines to do squats, abs etc.
The question is, an i right in thinking cardio is what's needed to shift the weight, and going every second day, when do you think i will notice a change? |

There will be a range in the heart rate scale that you will need to maintain during the exercise, will be your 'fat burning' range you want to keep in, should be shown on the machines or have a look on google. Cycling works well running is okay but i dont do it much because its not great for the knees. Diet is most important if thats clean aswell as exercise you can notice change in weeks. |

HIIT - high intensity interval training is probably the best to shock the system ( I’m no expert)
But I’ve seen results with that. As previous poster suggests, diest has to be on point or you’re wasting your time.

I’m a boxing trainer and run a bootcamp in my free time.
Diet plays a major key. So try and delete unnatural sugar out of your diet and drink lots of water. Eat clean little and often.
Mix it up in the gym and don’t do the same thing all the time. Do your cardo but do HIIT training with it and push your body.
Lift weights and do body weight exercises.
If you send me a message I will happily send over an exercise routine for you to follow.
It won’t happen over night and it’s a hard process. It’s all mental and you have to be CONSISTENT!!!

Given your expertise, could you advise me..?
I need to lose 3st. I'm working on the diet but gym wise, I have limitations. Medically, I'm banned by specialists from any form of weights; I cannot run due to bad arthritis in both knees, so it's low impact exercising like cycling with little resistance as advised by my GP. I don't swim either!
But my local Gym insists on Weight Training and won't listen to my medical limitations which will cause serious issues if I was to carry them out.
Any advice? |

Diet is key in you case and you should maybe get a Fitbit to see how many calories on average you burn in a day vs how much you take in.
I don’t know your medical condition but you could try very light 2kg dumbbells to help with some exercises.
Having bad knees will limit what body weight work you can do and could also hinder your movement, so I’d need to know more there.
Walking is very good, so I’d defo recommend long distances and if you could use a treadmill increase the speed and put it on an incline. Keep with the cycling and put the bike on a very low resistance. Try and go as fast as you can with out hurting yourself for as long as you can. You want to get the heart pumping!! |

Walking; within my job plus daily walks, I complete around 8000 steps per day minimum.
Heart; seems healthy but I'm going thru investigative tests as earlier in the year, it was found I've had a mini Stroke in the past but didn't know it at the time & worked through it!
Dumbells; problem is bad arthritic hands meaning I cannot hold them for more than a minute maximum.
Apart from that, I'm disgustingly healthy! |

Walking, everyone should have time for a 30min daily walk and it's free. No soft drinks at all, they're useless. Drink only water, tea, coffee with no or little sugar. Drink less alcohol. Eat more lean meats. Eat better carbohydrates. Simple things will make you lose weight without even making drastic changes in your life. It's a lifestyle and things need to be changed slowly overtime. If you try to changed everything at once you will more than likely fail |

That's fine in theory but everyone is different.
I can't stand Tea or Coffee so drink sugar free Fruit Squashes. I hate Vegetables with a vengeance, but try to watch my diet as I'm Diabetic T2.
But was diagnosed a few months ago with an Iron deficiency so have been encouraged to eat meats which in some aspects goes against a diabetes diet, so it's balancing a diet to suit all illnesses.
I'm teetotal so that's in my favour. |

Stepping into the gym is the hardest step for a lot of people, then maintaining it...
But It’s not just in the gym where you might need to make some changes...
Diet helps a lot, along with drinking plenty of water (cleans the body out well, giving you more energy and generally feeling better)
Cardio is great for losing weight but you just have to find you’re right pace as everyone is different... there’s a lot you can do just search different types of training in google and try out a few different ones,
If you aren’t walking out of the gym knowing you couldn’t of give it anymore then choose another and try that little bit hard

Weight training will help burn weight, the more you use your muscles, the more fuel they burn.
The biggest group of muscles are in your legs, so working them increases your metabolism.
The Hiit style training is very good for increased metabolism.
Cross training is very good for all over fitness.
As has been pointed out eating clean is probably the most important thing for losing weight.

One thing to remember is you can’t out train a bad diet.
I’m a personal trainer and boxing coach myself.
You firstly need to work out your daily calorie needs... google TDEE calculator.
Track what you’re eating on MyFitnessPal
A mixture of cardio and weights will give you the best benefits.
However do not be obsessed with the number on the scales.
Take measurements... chest/ waist/ hips etc.
Taking the number 220... minus your age. That gives you your max heart rate.
You need to work at about 70% of your Max to help burn fat.
Weight training will help your body burn calories for longer.
Lastly... well done for taking the first step... find what you enjoy exercise wise and hit those goals |

I’d just like to add, for the foundational part of your goal, which I’d say is fat burning. I would suggest hiring a coach who has experience with proven client results.
If you’re new to this or returning after a break, the information required to help reach your goal can be overwhelming and investing in a coach will be a great benefit, especially if you’re not the kind of person that can sit for hours reading books or attending seminars, like a coach would.
All being written, a great coach can be the difference between reaching your goal and a wasted gym membership. Also be aware, a clueless PT will be just as bad as a wasted gym membership so be careful who you choose.
A coach should be able to offer the basics:
Consultation
A diet plan
A training program
Weekly check-ins
If they only offer programs and no diet, walk away, since your food is the most crucial part.

I'm glad I don't need to lose weight after reading that. It sounds like you want to take all the good shit away. Thank fuck for my genes and metabolism that I can eat what I want and stay slim "
Well I'm 67kg, eat takeaways, biscuits, chocolate all regularly enough. Soft drinks are poison and pointless, sugarless tea is definitely better tasting than sugar tea. What's wrong with lean meats? The fact is people have to change something. If you're drinking two cans of and having two cups of tea with two spoons of sugar and 10 pints the weekend you're gunna get fat if you can't exercise as one guy above can't because of medical reasons. Less sugar and a few less pints will make you drop pounds effortlessly. Once you get to a limit where you don't lose anymore you start looking at other things in your diet or you actually start exercising regularly. |

I go every single day without fail I do spin, legs bums and tums, tabatta, body combat, bofy attack, kettlecise, circuit, and always pop into the gym first. Iv been doing it 7 weeks and the weight is melting off me. Make sure your eating an hour or 2 before workout and if your planning on doing any cardio classes, eat a snack between. The diet is hugely important its got to be a lifestyle change as well. Plenty of protein and carbs as small as your palm. And drink a good sized glass of water per pound of sweat youve lost in a workout. Im sure your doing well keep it up xx |

Swimming is a tremendous exercise for people who can't manage to lift weights or do anything involving high impact. If you are not a good swimmer then maybe do a water aerobics class. The resistance of the water will be like resistance training with light weights. Hope that helps.
